New Fixed Speed Cameras

Something pretty major was happening on Barton Hwy today, dunno if it had anything to do with the speed camera but there were vehicle inspectors everywhere and saw around 20 cop cars between civic and the welcome to A.C.T sign

those cameras will pay them selves off in 2 months and then they will start working toward the next installation of cameras, so on and so fourth. My advice Dont speed unless your sure you'll get away with it, or save it for the track.

The main problem I see with these cameras is that there going to slow down the highways. I hate it wen people see a speed camera and then slow right down. If your dead on the speed limit or even over it by just a few k’s they cant book you!

And most canberrn’s drive to slow as it is. Like why don’t people understand yet that when you merge in to a 100kph lane you merge in at 100kph, not 60, 70 or 80 then accelerate slowly to 100.

When the speed camera catches your speed does anyone know if they allow for a percentage of the speed as an error.

I think I have been done doing around 60 in a 50 zone and im hoping that I can weasel out of it somehow...

The bastards have already taken my licence (it doesnt get taken off me till the 25th) and I dont want any more problems from them.

BTW dont get caught using ur phone while driving, its 3 points and $230, I learnt first hand

its something around 8-10% due to computer error from memory, so 88 in an 80, 66 in a 60 etc. think this is only with old model speed cameras.

I really really really really really hate it when people drive under the speed limit, i used to do pizza delivery and i was so keen to buy a megaphone to abuse people for driving slowly, still think about buying one actually. Fair enough if its raining or the road conditions are changed but not on the parkway, if you aren't comfortable doing 80/100 then hand in your license. That and asian drivers, (sorry to the token asian here ) they make the best food, they are the best with technology so its only fair they can't be gifted with everything

Just thought i would let you guys know some facts about these cameras as a friend of mine works for the company that installs all the cameras in the ACT.

General rule of thumb going around is that the cost of a speed camera will generally be recouped in 1 month from the fines it dishes out (and as little as one week in some places in Sydney). So i dont think anyone has any questions in your mind as to why they are installing them.

Red Light cameras dont actually just take a snap shot of you, they record for 10 seconds after every red light change. They have in built storage that will last a few days. They added this feature as its very hard to find out who's fault it is if someone smashes a car at a red light and you have no witnesses.

All cameras have a 10% tolerance, ie: your doing 110 the camera wont take a happy snap if you do 121 but will if you do 122, your doing 60 it wont take a happy snap if you do 66 but will if you do 67 etc. This is generally what police officers go by aswell for their handleld jobs.

Easiest way to not get caught is to not speed, i cant talk as i have lost my licence three times due to speeding offences although none of the times i was caught was by a mobile van or fixed speed camera (as mobile vans pick the same spots EVERY TIME and fixed speed cameras are FIXED and you are a freakin idiot if you get caught by em).

I gotta say, if these are the loop detectors or whatever, then i havnt got a problem with them. The ones in Vic on the Hume on the way into melbourne actually work because you have to slow down, so i dont see it as revenue raising. If you know they are there, you will slow down for that large section of road and their mission is accomplished. If it is a single one that you dont even know about and dont slow down, then it would be revenue raising.

sorry if its already been mentioned in this thread, i cbf reading through..

but with the underground speed cameras, i think it has to do with magnetic strips under the road that read a vehicles speed when it passes over it, but there still has to be a camera present on the ground as its impossible to get the cars rego plates without one..

the current speed cameras are all like this, if u notice on the road there is fresh concrete added, this is where the magnetic strips have been placed.. so once u pass this strip, the camera cant record ur speed..

yeh but hey can time between that camera and the next, they have a certain time set and if you do it quicker than that, then it will get you.

the speed camera in between jerra and queanbeyan is a perfect example of this, as u can notice the fresh patch of concrete on the road about 10m infront of the camera.. i always speed away after this part and ive never been done..

also, this particular speed camera only gets u goin towards queanbeyan from jerra, even though they have a sign on the other side of the road saying there is a speed camera in use, it doesnt get u goin towards jerra..

All intersections that operate fixed speed/red light cameras have signage, advising motorists that cameras are in operation at that intersection.

Man almost packed it when i read the locations. I went through the Federal Highway / Antill ST round'a'bout 7 times between 9pm-5am on Saturday night doing much more then 80.

I have heard many a story's of ppl buying new cars in Sydney, driving 3 hours to CBR.. then sliding up and over that first r.about, hopefully missing the poles. Where some large warning signs, or lights might have done... good to see such a civilized society, putting a fecking camera there.

I noticed two of the new ones have been installed facing both north and south on the Parkway (just north of the Cotter Rd over pass). Does anyone know if these are live yet because the signs haven't been erected???

Has anyone else noticed if any of the other ones have been installed yet?

I've seen videos of 2 different methods

One involves a mechanical device that retracts the numberplate which wouldn't be too hard, the other was creating a digital numberplate so you can just turn it off whenever you want (video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS1eW3QlaQM)

Noticed one on Federal highway heading towards civic, just before you hit the round about (in front of the formula hotel i think).

Its a little hidden as its behind all other signage and i didnt see any speed camera warning signs!
