Hey guys

I'm about to be the pround owner of a 1993 r33 GTS-T. I took it for a test drive the other weekend with my dad, and found that when i was a a low RPM the car was pinging, it only happend once when i was taking a corner in 3rd and you could hear a really loud rattle i spoke to the owner who is a machanic and he told me that, thats a usual occurance with these cars when in a low rpm, and it is betta to shifgt down and stay in higher rpm range. But i spoke to a friend about the car and he told me it is very un-usual for a car to ping at low rpm speically if there is really no performce mods on the car (3.5 inch dunp to a high flow cat, with a 4inch cat back to a 5inch cannon, and a front mount intercooler)

So i was wondering if anyone can tell me if the problem is something that i should be worried about and, not get the car or like the machanic said something that happens with these cars.

Please help me out i really dont want to buy a mellon, and never hear the end of "we told you so" from my rents. lol

Best regards

Vlad

(sorry about any spelling mistakes)

Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk man 3.5inch dump and a 4inch dump??? you sure the noise levels legal in your state???

i have a 3inch dump, 3.7inch catback and its f**kING loud. lol

i wouldnt think its pinging tho... when you say low rpm, how low? as in under 4000rpm? it could be ur plugs... cos rb's run rich when more boost is added.. maybe clean your coils and check for cracks?

when you heard the noise were you in third gear and was the engine revving under 2000rpm, mine makes a sort of rattling noise when doing this, im not sure why but i dont think its something to worry about

that was spot on, i was in therd taking the corner and it might of been 2,000 RPMS or under when the nosie started, then as soon as the revs got up it stoped.

So is it something that i should be worried about, or just something that happens with these cars?

to be honest

blow that car off n go get something else

im sure you can buy a decent car without worries and trust me MORE worries will come later on so look for something that you know works!

how much is he giving it for?

he wants 16 for it, i took out a friend to see it to and he too said the engine sounds fine, but yeah im worried abou that rattle!

lol i got no idea, i was just wondering if it was the same thing mine does, i thought it might have something to do with mine having a nismo GMAX twin plate clutch and a short shifter, but generally if i know its going to be revving under 2000 in third ill change down to second (unless im feeling lazy)

it doesn't seem to affect the cars performance at all so im not really worried about it. hopefully someone else knows if its bad or not

Yeah 3rd in a corner is to high a gear if your going slow enough. You've probably just put a lot of load on the motor trying to move it at such low speeds under a certain amount of rpm. Don't worry about it the car is fine. If it was pinging at high rpm, then I'd be worried.

Thank you all very much for the advice, i have just put a down payment on the car so hopefully i should be getting it soon, and asking "what mods should i start to do to it" lol

once again thank you

its weird tho cause it only seems to do it in third, meh,

Not necessarily. It'll do it in other gears to given the chance. eg. Driving up a hill doing about 60kph and putting it in 5th gear will put the car under load and will make the same sound. It just so happens in his situation he's in 3rd gear going even slower, probably more like 20kph around a corner and revving under 2000rpm and trying to accelerate thus putting the car under load.

Mine does the same... Anything low and the whole car sounds like it's about to fall apart. I found originally that the stock heatshielding on the stock exhaust was loose and making the problem much more obvious, so I removed it. Now the sound is only coming from around the front.

As soon as the revs are up a little more, whether you are booting it or just cruising up to speed) it goes away completely. I *DO* find though, that it happens MUCH more easily when cornering.

Every morning I pull out from my street in first, and shift to 2nd as i'm turning, or I just turn in 2nd if there are no cars and I don't need to stop... this makes the noise every time without fail. I think I need to keep it in first while cornering, with lots of go, and some opposite lock. =-/

I had a similar problem on my 32 that occured around the 2200 mark. I found that it was one of the heat-shield welds on my metal-cat cat converter had broken and was causing it to vibrate. However if you are suss on the car don't buy it. There are plenty of others for sale.

    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
