hI EVERYONE.....

JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD ANY IDEA ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY ZX?

I have no idea what the the problem is and neither does any mechanic i take it to....

Just recently when driving at about 100k's or less the car just started to lose power and gradually drop down the revs until it came to a stop......

Even when i put the foot down it goes no where... just jolts and gradually loses power, i struggled to get home. stopping and starting about 50 times.

But then a few days later i drove it it was fine! nothing wrong with it.

So then i took it to the mechanics and he said it sounded like the fuel fump was on its way out, so i had a new one fitted, and a service etc...

After this the car was fine again for a couple of weeks... i thought the problem was fixed,

Until last night the same thing happened again but much worse...

I was driving on the ballarat road when all of a sudden the car just started jolting and revving like crazy!

Then if i tried to accellerate it would jolt and lose power, until eventually it would just stall.

Then if i tried to start the car straight away it would start and then stall again.

When started at a standstill, the needle on the RPM meter fluctuates between the 2 and 3 really fast as if im putting my foot on and off the accellerator really fast but i didnt have my foot on the pedal...

Then if i try and take off the car really struggles... i have my foot on the pedal but it isn't going anywhere, just sometimes it kicks in and goes for a bit and then loses power.

However i have driven the car at other times with out a worry.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?????

It cant be fuel pump or battery cos i just had new ones put in and a service..

If anyone knows or has the slightest idea please get back to me!!

Cheers smile.gif

check Air flow meter maybe? (or meters, dunno how many a ZX has), also is it Twin Turbo, or NA?

almost the same thing my old r32 did, except i was on a freeway when it did it.

also, maybe try another mechanic, seems like he doesnt know anything about it.

where are you from?

^^^ as with the above i would be looking into the afm side of things. Syptoms like it hunting at idle puts it in the afm catergory.

It could be something simple like a loose plug or a big enough vacuum leak (it would have to be BIG) or it could be the afm itself.

When its hunting ie. reving 2-3k rpm up and down, is it blowing alot of black smoke out the exhaust?

electrical contact cleaner is about $5 from Repco.

I just bought some yesterday.

get that.

get the AFM off the car.

spray this stuff in to the AFM and the element.

it dries in about 10 seconds..

wipe anything you can with a dry clean cloth.

DO NOT TOUCH THE HOTWIRE ELEMENT that sits in the AFM body.

apart from that, it's all good to clean.

plug it all back in and try again.

MOST of the time it will fix the problem.

while you're at it, clean out your air filter and air box (if you still have it)

if it doesn't turn out to be your afm - check all the earths in your engine.

my old rb20 did similar things before i ripped it out. had cleaned the afm several times but that wasn't it - turned out that whoever installed the engine (previously had an sr) didnt do all the earths properly and this caused the ECU to trip out and do funky sh*t to the car

just a suggestion, good luck with it

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
