Hi,

I have just purchased a 1996 Series II R33 GTS-T and have a few questions which I was hoping you guys could shed some light on.

Q1. I was driving today and noticed that my oil pressure was sitting around the 2 mark until the car warmed up and I started driving a little more "enthusiastically" when it went to around half way (4), is this normal? The car has a FMIC, Oil Catch Can, Pod Filter, boost controller (only set to 7psi).

Q2. This one may be hard to determine, but I jumped in the back and noticed that both of the rear door trims were not attached properly, they are just sitting there needing to be screwed back on! Is this likely to be something from when it was complianced (I am the second aussie owner)? I just wanted to see this if this is common...

Q3. It looks like I need a new front windscreen seal as part of it has broken away, is there an aftermarket one that fits the R33 and is easy to get hold of? Is there anyone who has had this done? and who by?

Q4. The 4th gear synchro is grinding (seems to happen more as the car warms up), I have done some reading and it appears this is relatively common and the Redline gearbox oil is the way to alleviate this, is this the consensus amongst those of you that have experienced it?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Yes normal, at least in my GTR with 5-40w oil, sits higher with thicker oil.

No idea, but yes get them screwed in.

Q3. It looks like I need a new front windscreen seal as part of it has broken away, is there an aftermarket one that fits the R33 and is easy to get hold of? Is there anyone who has had this done? and who by?

no idea

Yes comon occurance even in my GTR, a good gear box oil will assist but no guarantees it will fix the problem.

Q1. - Normal, especially if youre using thin oil such as 5W-40 etc.

Q2. Best thing to do is take them off completely and check that all of the trim plugs arent broken and replace them if they are.

Q3. Any windscreen reparier will be able to fix gaps in your windscreen seals.

Q4. My gearbox was very clunky and used to grind into 2nd and 4th until I replaced the oil with Redline Synthetic Shockproof oil... Its dear as poison but works wonders, its worth trying.

There’s a consensus that specialty g.box fluids fix most syncro issues. Redline helped my box going into 1st while rolling, as well as a small nick when shifting from 3rd > 4th

ahh, that's great to hear that I can do something about it..

Does anyone have a set of wheels I could borrow for rego? The previous owner used spacers in the front in and I just need something to get over the pits to change the rego over before I address the issue of getting new wheels etc..

There would be beer / wine / other involved for whoever can help me :D

Cheers,

Steve

Just remember that it only assists in changing the gears, at the end of the day, its still f**ked and you dont want the box giving way when you least expect it. Having said that, it does work well for its intended purpose.

R33 GTST RB25 gearbox = Very very strong... I dont think that its going to give way just because it crunches into 4th. There's a reason that these gearboxes are put behind big power SR20DET's Silvia's and 180's and RB30ET/DET's in VL's etc. its because they are almost bullet proof (if youre not an idiot who cant drive).

My box has been ground, crunched and clunked since I first got it about 4 years ago and since putting redline shockproof in it I havent had any troubles with it.

If you want some redline shockproof for a reasonable price ($20.99 a Liter needing 4.5L for R33) send this guy an email (Performancelub.com) .

I buy all my oil and spark plugs there, ridiculously cheap if you can find other people to join in to lower the postage cost (postage at a set rate of $25 per box, 1 box fit 6 spark plugs, 5x 1L engine oil and 5x 1L gear oil with room to spare). I need more engine oil soon so if you want to split the postage 50-50 send me a pm, anyone else that wants to join just post here.

He sells Castrol, Mobil, Royal Purple, Redline and NGK products.

These gearboxes are very strong items but definitely are not bullet proof with any car with decent power being able to strip gears and synchros as quick as you can throw at em.

As these gearboxes are usually subjected to high rev gearchanges the synchro's are prone to damage. if your synchro is crunching then redline will only work for so long as the damage is already done.

Best to get it checked out by someone who knows as no two gearboxes are the same and while one may last four years others may only last four months as metallurgy is not an exact science on factory gearboxes.

I think what datto260z is trying to say is better to catch it before it causes any more damage.

Anyone who has worked on gearboxes will tell you it is cheaper to just replace synchros rather than replacing shafts and gears which is what will end up happening in time.

Try the rdline or even better the NEO gear oil but expect to pay a hefty price and no guarantees.

Yeh thats all im saying. I know how strong they are and that it probly wouldnt give way like that, but if anyone is considering making a substantial amount of power, then its worth doing the extra work. But for lower power and not much hard driving, yeh for sure its worth it.

    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
    • Does that German restaurant still exist in the old place out the NW end of Goulburn? When I say "out the NW end of"...I am really being vague. It was 1997 when I was last there, and the only point of reference I can recall is that it was on the opposite side of the main drag from the big merino. And when I say "opposite side of the main drag", I don't mean "on the main drag". It was either a couple of streets back from there, or might have even been out in the sticks a bit further. Was an old farm building or mill or somesuch. And when I say "the big merino" I might actually be thinking of a completely different part of town, because I just looked on maps and the big bugger is not where I remembered him to be! The food was good, consisting largely of various German mystery-meat sausage/loaf things and kartofflen.
    • So while the second sentence is completely correct and the whole point of the conversation, the first sentence bears consideration. If this bloke is just hoping to throw big turbos on and drive it around, because there are no helpful facilities at all in his tropical paradise** then he likely has zero chance of even knowing what the TP is on the last column in the stock maps, let alone know whether the ECU is operating anywhere near it or past it. So the point is very very moot. And, per what I said before, at stock boost on those turbos, you may well be off the end of the map. **I'm just back from Vanuatu, so I know exactly what small Pacific nations can be like wrt paradise without requisite facilities. But it's not even that simple. I put a high flow on my car and had to drive it around without a proper tune because of the lack of opportunity*** to put the bigger AFM and injectors into it to allow it to be tuned. I had to turn the boost down to less than I had before, and back off the boost controller's ramp, because it was exploring parts of the map that it didn't drive in before, and really couldn't access for tuning on the dyno either, and so was pinging. It was still well within the last column, because when I first**** set up the Nistune on the Neo I rescaled all axes of the maps to give some more space to explore. ***Family dyno was broken ****This was 13 years ago, and the TIM thing wasn't a thing then and so TP would definitely grow when pushing past the stock tune's limits.
    • Yep, this bit another local owner. I caught it before putting the transmission back into the car, what I noticed was the pressure plate fingers weren't flat and even. It's more obvious with the pull style clutch because the throwout bearing ring was visibly not flat once everything is put together. Nismo should really update their instructions to call out this specific detail. I'm not even sure the clutch as-shipped orients everything properly.
