Possible To Use Rb25/26 Engine Mounts With Rb20det?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to compare the RB20DET motor mounts with the ones from the 25/26 motors. Not just the rubber mounts (which from GTS-T to RB25/26 conversions seems to work) but the actual aluminum mounts that bolt to the block. From what I have "heard" the answer is "no" and I would tend to expect that much, but ANY insight would be appreciated. I just don't have the resources to look at this myself.

they will all interchange with each other as they all have the same block bolt patten

Oh wow - thanks! I'm in the US and no one here could give me a straight answer. I have access to custom RB25/26 mounts for my project (RB in Z32) but not "specifically" for RB20. I'm sure the 25/26 mounts (aluminum structure) are somewhat different lengths than the 20 units, but as long as the 25/26 mounts can bolt to the 20 block (like you say they can) the differences in mounting position should be neglegeble. If anyone has a second opinion or has additional experience please feel free to add to this.

Thanks again!

the Nissan Cefiro runs the RB20det and its engine mounts can be used on the the rb30's to drop the motor within the engine bay, so yes they all bolt onto the other blocks

so since its going into a 300zx, you'll be modifying the cross memeber to account for the new mounts?

ooohh your getting pre fabbed mounts specifically for this conversion - makes sense - but i beg to ask, how is this fabrication related?

I figured since I would be mentioning "custom mounts" and asking about swapping around motor mounts this would be the best place for the question.

I assumed that if the custom mounts for the Z32 are designed for an RB25/26, there might be issues with the length or angle of the RB20's aluminum mounts versus the RB25/26 aluminum mounts. If I can swap around the aluminum mounts from the various motors, then I might be able to get away with using the custom 25/26 Z32 mounts with the RB20 IF there is such a problem. Longitudinal placement could still be an issue - again I do not have the resources to investigate.

RB26's are terribly expensive, with 25's not too far behind. It would be nice to find an RB20 solution for the Z without the "premium" price tag. There are still logistical issues with finding 25/26 trans units and mounts - it really interests me since no one has even looked into it.

Yes the R25 or 26 offers more, but the RB20 is capable of decent power. Personal preference really..

    • Each to their own I guess  Me, I put just as much time into cleaning inside of the cars as I do on the outside As for getting wet, it is really no different than steam cleaning the carpets at home, apart from the cars carpet dries alot faster than the house, again, I only do it in the hotter months and leave the car opened up for a few hours As I only do it yearly, it is just before I do the diff and gearbox service, so I clean the carpets, then it's up on stands, wheels off, service, clean the undercarriage,  grease the bushings and do a nut and bolt check on everything  Disclaimer: I typically had all the time in the world to kill when I was working 馃ぃ, so spending a full day or 2 cleaning, serving and "looking at stuff" was,  easily achievable, and a fun mental therapy day As for time to kill, I retired last Wednesday, so apart from my physical training, my days are filled with lots of random jobs around the house and garden...."Idle hands are the Devils something something" I am also buying a new house sooner rather than later, I'm actually looking at a potential property tomorrow, I'm looking forward to getting a car hoist as I'm starting to get to old to crawl around under a car, I can only imagine all the undercarriage cleaning and looking at stuff when that gets set up
    • Yeah, I'm not interested in wetting the carpets, and I don't care about brown dirt/dust that lives deep in the pile or underneath. It's not like I crawl around on them in my birthday suit or eat dropped food off them (because there is never any open food in my car). The seats are alcantara (cheap Chinese imitation alcantara, to be sure!) with barely 1" of foam pad behind the surface. That's not getting wet either. Any car that I would be happy to get the interior wet, I would not care to put the effort into.
    • We have one that holds 2.8L of water. On floor carpet that hasn't been touched in 2 or 3 years, will take a minimum of 2 fills of the tank to do a bedroom, and that's going AROUND the bed.   In the cruiser, I used an ENTIRE 2.8L tank, just on the front passenger footwell. But it had some fungus growing, and had been full of mud from being used as a 4WD for many years. I can do that floor again, and it will still pull mud out. However, the water now only looks dirty, not pitch black and leaving full sludge in the bottom of the tank it sucks back into. Oh, and, this is about a $1500 unit.
