Hey guys just picked myself up a good condition used R33 Series II turbo

I've cleaned the coolant galleries and flushed the oil gallery

Just wondering if theres any safe way of cleaning the compressor fins and turbine fins ? I was thinking of spraying the exhaust fins with carby cleaner/brake cleaner but I was unsure of this.

Also one more question I put oil into the top oil hole in the turbo and filled it and it didnt drain out the bottom ? does that mean there is a blockage or do they need the oil pressure to squeeze the oil through ?

Would appreciate any advise.

Thanks

Yeah thats what I was thinking....Something like brake cleaner would be good because it dries pretty quickly but also i dont know what reaction (if any) it would have on the compressor fins since they are ceramic.

Do you think it would be ok to use brake cleaner on all of the turbo fins etc ?

the compressor wheel is steel, unless its from a very late series 2 then it maybe nylon/plastic. The exhaust wheel is ceramic.

I wouldnt be too worried about the exhaust side, the first decent rev will clean most of the junk out. If you want to do a good job on the compressor side, just undo the compressor cover. Theres 2 brackets on the back with a few bolts holding it in. Its very easy to pull off, that way you will have full access to the turbine and inside the cover itself. I would just use some degresser, since it should only have a bit of oil residue in there anyway and will come off easily with a rag.

Just make sure the cover is in the same postion when you tighten the bolts/brackets back up

  • 1 year later...

I pulled my HKS2530 off tonight as im changing exhaust manifold studs and it looks like it needs some tlc.

Ive done a search and this is the only thread ive found about cleaning a turbo and I think it is ok to take the front cover off a turbo just make sure it goes back on the same way you took it off. like put 2 dots on either side one on core and one on cover then when your putting the cover back on just line the dots back up :D

Im just not sure about using degreaser? could it hurt the seal behind it? im thinking of using a rag soaked in degreaser and an old toothbrush so theres less chance of it hitting the seal.

Any ideas ?

    • Have you done the Ignition Sync Wizard in the AEM software?
    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
