Hi guys,

My mechanic and I have just been going though some minor issues he has noted with my R33 (1996 R33 GTST S2). Was hoping someone on here might be able to point me in the right direction for some of these things:

*Minor rust treatment- there is some minor surface rust on the rear cross member (diff support). Am hoping that there is a good spray on solution to deal with this. From searching, I've read that 'Kill Rust' and 'Cold Galv' are good for this kind of thing. Where would I get these? Anything else that would be better to treat rust?

*Driver's side rear steering rack boot- this boot is split, and I don't want crap to get in there so I'm looking to replace it (am thinking I might as well buy two while I'm at it). I've read this thread but that seems to be in relation to the front. Any tips as to where I would buy these?

*Gearbox oil leaking out of breather- I recently had my gearbox oil changed and had some Redline oil put in. Apparently a small amount of gearbox oil is leaking out of the breather. Oil levels for the gearbox are fine- doesn't look to have been an overfilling problem. Anyone come across this before? Suggestions?

*Noisy power steering pump- This is a strange one, and my mechanic says he thinks its just a design flaw with how the pump works. Basically, when you go to full lock or near full lock the pump is really noisy. From what my mechanic has discovered it looks to be a result of the pump ingesting air because of how quickly the fluid gushes out of the reservoir. The reservoir is filled to the appropriate level, and if you watch fluid levels when you turn the car on the reservoir very quickly empties about 1 quarter of the fluid in it. Turn the car off, and the reservoir fluid levels return to full just as quickly.

Many thanks for any help / advice you can offer. I have tried to search for all of the above on here before posting, so apologies if anything I've asked has already been answered. Cheers.

i would use a POR 15 product on the diff cradle - use the prep and finish to kill the existing rust, then protect it.

you could always go as far as getting it sandblasted and powdercoated.

I've used some rust off (rost off?) on my diff area, I went over it with a metal brush and then coated it in a rust converter, then a rust primer, then a paint over it to prevent it happening again.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by a 'POR 15' product?

EDIT: ah, you mean this stuff? http://www.por15.com/

Looks good, I'll try to order some. Know any good places in Aus to buy it from?

A silly question maybe but have you filled the P/S while the engine is running and bled it of air. Im guessing your mechanic would do that but thought i may aswell ask.

Nah, not a silly question. Pretty sure that has been tried though, I'll double check. If I run out of things to try, I might even get the Billion replacement reservoir and see how that goes.

Thanks for the replies guys.

fill the steering fluid while someone else turns it back and forth with car on and wheels on the ground. easiest way. power steering does funny things with air in it. A lot of cars are a bit noisy on full lock, but if you can see the fluid dissapear, then the system is not as full as it looks.

If you have a look how power steering works it would make a lot of sense

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
