Ok.

If your fan blower is playing up.. ie intermittantly working.. or not working at all.. and you can hear the high load relay switch on when you hit full speed fan. Or you can tap the motor and the fan starts working.. then this will show you how to fix it.

This is for the r32.. gtst or gtr there the same car people.. or the r33 even the 34.. the difference being the location and access to the fan blower in the 33 and the 34. In effect all you doing is removing the blower motor, so if you get that far on the other models you can tag along from that point on this write up.

1st.

locate where you glove box is. should be on your dash on the passenger side. Now, if you dont know your car doors from your wheel nuts.. then.. i'd probably not even start this.

IMG_0053.jpg

2nd.

Alright.. lets get stuck into it.

Underneath the glove box is two screws which hold it onto a support brace.. remove these screw.. and remove the glove box. Dont try and be a smarty and go lossing all the screws where going to be removing hey.. :bunny:

IMG_0052.jpg

3rd.

This is what it looks like with the glove box removed.. you can see the support brace.. the side garnish the heater core and the blower motor on the left.

IMG_0051.jpg

4th.

This garnish needs to be removed.. it has 3 screws on it.. one on the door side.. with a garnish clip.. one at the bottom where the glove box was.. and at the top aswell. Now, on the inside is a clip.. reach in and unclip this little sucker.. so you dont break it of your dash.

IMG_0050.jpg

the clip

IMG_0049.jpg

Now with the side garnish gone.. this is what it will look like now.

IMG_0047.jpg

Ok, the support brace has 4 screws holding it. Remove them and the brace. If you get it right, it should look like this.

IMG_0046.jpg

5th.

Ok, there is 3 screws and one electrical plug on the motor. Undo these and the motor with fan will slide downwards and out.

Remove from car and it should look simillar to this..

IMG_0022.jpg

If not.. youve removed the wrong thing. Dont be my surgeon when i go into hospital.

Ok, this is where the other model lads can join back in on this expedition.. thats right.. you 33 and 34 boys and gals..

6th.

now time to pull it apart and fix it.

On the back of the motor is two small screws.. remove them.

Remove the fan with the 10mm bolt. it has a slot guide.. and may be a bit tight. but it should look like this when done.

IMG_0023.jpg

As you can see by this picture.. it may well be very dirty!

IMG_0024.jpg

Ok there is a small plastic cover.. sealing off the plug guide.. here

IMG_0025.jpg

And the plug looks like this

IMG_0026.jpg

gently remove it.

7th.

You now need to reverse the fan and use a brake pad spreader tool or somthing similliar and prise the motor from the plastic housing like so..

IMG_0027.jpg

the tool.. other than yourself..

IMG_0028.jpg

The motor is in very tight.. so slowly does it alright.. no kung fu crap to get it out either alright.

Once out it will look like this

IMG_0030.jpg

and this with out the fan attached

IMG_0031.jpg

8th.

There is two screws on the back of the motor.. remove them and the whole assembly comes apart.. looking like this.

IMG_0032.jpg

You will nothice in my photo.. that mine is filthy on the inside.. so this suggests to me that this car was not a 70k old car.. by no means!! Anyways.. time to get in there and clean. I used some turps.. and rag.. and some elbow grease to come up with this result..

IMG_0035.jpg

Bloody beautiful!!

9th.

Now.. this is why your fan blower.. doesnt work!.. look at that just disgraceful!!

IMG_0033.jpg

Ok.. to fix it!

You need these tools..

IMG_0036.jpg

So.. what we are doing here is.. filing away the ridge caused by the wear of the brushes.. and cleaning the pitted area off the commutator.

IMG_0037.jpg

So.. gently with the file.. file the commutator back flat till you get a nice smooth clean surface again.. like this picture..

IMG_0038.jpg

beautiful! Now.. if your hands hurt from this.. its ok.. its called exercise.. you dont get enough by the sounds of it.

Now.. you would have noticed before you started filling there was groves around the commutator.. and now there probably isnt.. like the above picture.

so with a sharp tool such as a mini file.. or hack saw blade etc.. re-grove these slots.. make sure there is no connection between each segment.. it should look something like this.. (not a good picture this one)

IMG_0039.jpg

10th.

Now.. the brushes.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!! So focus grasshoppers!!

The brushes are a very soft material.. and must be treated with care!! There will be grooves in them.. you need fine sand paper to remove these.. otherwise we will end up where we started in no time!

here are the grooves..

IMG_0040.jpg

Now.. it only took 3 wipes with the sandpaper to remove the groves.. BE GENTLE!! it will look like this when done properly

IMG_0041.jpg

11th.

Ok.. the overhaul is complete!.. to reassemble.

There is two bush bearings in the motor.. that the main shaft rotates in.. i used a little bit of vaseline as a lub in there.. (dont get sidetracked with the vasso like i did..cough)

IMG_0042.jpg

Ok.. if you did it right.. it looks like this again!!

IMG_0043.jpg

Oh!.. all clean and like brand new again!!

12th.

Make sure you clean the inside of the plastic housing and fan with soapy water.. and that they are nice and dry. To reinsert the motor.. I turned it upside down and pushed the plastic cover over the motor.. with the motor pushing against a piece of wood.

IMG_0044.jpg

Now replace cleaned fan and bingo!!

IMG_0045.jpg

13th.

OK.. last step.. putting it back into the car. Hopefully you remembered where you got it from in the first place....

Nice new working fan again!

    • 2001 BE5D Subaru Legacy B4 RSK (3rd gen) EJ208 (pink injector) Twin Turbo 280PS 5-speed manual Full time 4WD "RSK" grade which means all of the above LQC option which means stock rear spoiler  I got it primarily to export to someone outside Japan who was interested. These BE5 Legacy B4 RSKs are going through a bit of a resurgence right know in Japan as they are one of the few cars from the "turbo, manual, RWD/4WD, 280hp gentleman's agreement era" cars that don't require stupid money to purchase. Which for some people might be a good opportunity to get as a base for restoration. If I can't find anyone to purchase it I will certainly be doing that myself over the long term. Why? Because it's properly fast in stock form, handles well enough for a GT sedan, there's still enough aftermarket and (if you can wait a while) genuine part support to make it a restoration candidate (<-- that will only get worse over time so it's a case of do it now or choose get a BL5 4th Gen). Mechanically it's fine, has only 89,200kms on the odometer. The problem with this car is that the body and exterior trims are weathered from at least the last 10 years being parked outdoors. I'm the 3rd owner, the first owner was the one that had it for 14 years and barely drove it, had a low-speed front impact (which didn't damage anything behind the radiator support) and got it fixed and sold it. The 2nd owner put most of the kms on it and parked it outside for the last 10 years, hence the door rubbers have seen better days but if you overlook those cosmetic details, it presents pretty nicely. There is some minor rust on the LH rear wheel arch which I'll have looked at too at some stage.  Also as you'd expect from a car this age, the clear top coat is gone, leaving a satin finish on the roof.  Mechanically it's fine (as you would expect from a car with less than 100K kms) but the steering does feel slightly vague around the centre position at higher speeds. So first on the list is to get the steering rack bushes looked at. There's also the Lock button on the remote which doesn't work, but the Open button does.... it means that the anti-theft system thinks it's always open? It seems like if you open the car and don't start the engine within 3 mins or so the anti-theft kicks in again without any beeps or signals. So if you got to start it after that, it won't. You have to push the open button again. That's how I understand it anyway. Just a small irritation but not a big problem to sort out. There's only one mod, the Wangan SPL muffler. Just a tad louder than stock. It's a really good mod for those who don't want to wake the neighbours but still want to hear a more prominent unequal length header EJ20 sound. Anyway I hope to get all those things done eventually, that is unless someone wanted to import it to their country from Japan (where I live). I'm open for negotiations as I really would like a Skyline... but this will definitely suffice in the meantime 🙂 *Disclaimer: This is how I picked it up from the dealer, minus the stuff on the back seat. I haven't cleaned the engine bay or done a thorough exterior clean, aside from spray painting the wipers.
    • Wow, even with the Audi logo centre caps. I love OEM wheel mismatches.
    • Welcome!  Can't go wrong with a Stag.
    • Looks good. Nice height.
    • Hey all, a little help from the Stagea hive mind plz.. I'm days away from buying either a 2002 Stagea 250tRS AR-X Four, premium leather, power seats and all the old switches etc that go with it, or a 2002 Stagea 250tRS VR-X Four AERO, pov pack, cloth seats etc, with coil overs, sports zorst, comes with original zorst and suspension and parts. (I think I've got the models right?) Both are VQ25DET, have 160000kms, both straight no rust both with $2000+ in recent servicing receipts, both ride on aftermarket 18" rims. The Aero has a replaced turbo as well. I like the cool factor of the Aero car but the AR-X has never been modified. Neither have been driven hardly at all in the last 5 years. Any thoughts on which one or does it come down to personal preference? davemoto
