Hey guys,

as the topic suggests, WIll I need to calibrate my speedometer and some other parts to compensate for lagrer rims?

I have a R34 Non-turbo. Stock rim size is 16 inches. I have 17 Inch rims on at the moment.

I want to put 350z rims on them, which are 18 inches.

Thanks,

Shane

Rim size has nothing to do with it. It the overall wheel diameter (rolling diameter).

You'll notice that 18" wheels have a lower-profile tire, compared with 17/16/15" rims?

Any half decent tyre+wheel stockist will look at your tyre plakard to work out the stock rolling diameter, and then find a suitable tyre profile to maintain the diameter as close-as-possible.

You wont need to touch your speedo.

i have 18" 350z rims on my r33

im running 235/40/18s on all fours which keeps my speedo pretty darn close to being correct.

its out like 0.5% or something

that should give you something to go by, instead of just relying on the tyre guys word.

also google for wheel size calculator or something similar. there is a site that will work it out for you

thanks Trav, thats what I've mostly been reading on the internet.

much appreciated.

Here's one for you, Shane.

Punch in the details of your current tyre package, and then find the dimensions of a set of 18's that have the same or similar rolling diameter.

Thanks Nick, ive used that to check...

the new rims are 108 and 164 mm larger in front and rear rolling diameter, respectively.

What difference will this make??

wow thats a 5 and 8% change in rolling diamtere. it says +/- 2% is a safety net. think ill need new tyres

Lower profile tyres will compestate for the larger rim as said above. No need to calibrate anything.

IT will go out by a very small percentage tho, maybe 0.5kmh. Nothing to worry about at all.

Tho from stock, the factory makes the speedometer read faster then ur actually going. Ive tested with my apexi rsm. At 100kmh you are actually going 97kmh. At 110kmh you are only going 104kmh. Something to do with safety...

    • Ok thanks..that was my second question if i can somehow bypass this even with Nistune(that is all i have right now...aparat from stock ECU. So with some aftemarket it can by "bypassed" or make it work?  I know there is Link or Haltech (mainly used). We have ECUmaster here so i will gather some info about it.
    • Yes. You will need to get the original boost sensor and wire it in. That is.... if you plan to use a stock ECU - even a Nistuned ECU. The Nissan ECU will not operate correctly without it connected. And yes, it will do annoying stuff like you are experiencing. You will almost certainly be better off with some aftermarket ECU, than trying to hunt down rare sensors.
    • Ok so ABS/TCS is "not" the problem. Yeah i know now about the ABS with Nistune(i told that to the Nistune guy) but iam not 100% why or why i dont have ABS. ABS cube is in the engine (always has been) but i had braked couple of times rly hard and brakes just locked and scream. Does all Skylines have ABS cube? That boost sensor https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/367633-wtb-r34-gtt-turbo-pressure-sensor-pics-inside/ Is this it? I need to ask but i have a picture of engine bay and i do not see that (100% is not in that place) If i do not have this the car can do what mine is?(cutting around 4000 rpm) Here is the pic of my engine bay(only one i have) BUT i think i dont have that cuz loom was used from my RB20DE NEO and i know (obviously) that it does not have boost control or any wire to that...) so maybe that is the problem? (i dont know for 100% if that car where the engine is from had that)...but i dont have the loom from that
    • I'm with you here. It's either loom has an issue, OR, injectors are not functioning properly. It could even be they're just constantly dribbling, hence the wet, but not firing.
    • Depending on how long the car sat it is very possible for injectors to be stuck open or closed, I'd get them cleaned and flow tested. Other than that, obviously when the loom changes and the car doesn't start any more....the loom is suspect so some tracing / comparing may be required
