How Far Can I Advance My Timing Without Causing Pinging (rb25de)

Gdya guys I've been playing around with spark timing. Is it ever acceptable for a car to ping, eg: instead of slapping it in 5th at 2g and stomping it I decided to eliminate wind noise etc and pull up the handbrake and let the clutch out on full load. I sarted using this as a test for pinging but thfound that even very close to stock timing (15 degrees) the car wud still ping.

Is this an unfair test? how far can I advance the timing safely? 5 degrees?

Hey were u running 98 octane fuel when you were doing this test?

In my experience i've found that advancing between 2-5 degrees is safe while running on 98 to stop it pinging.

oh ok yeh I am running 98 octane at the moment fortunetly. thanks mate, basically looking for a ballpark figure. i think 5 degrees it is haha. cheers

stock they run about 15degress BTDC base timing, mines at around 20 and no pinging and thats even running vortex 95 when im lazy...

my brothers on the other hand has maxed his out, i havent stuck a timing gauge on it but i would assume it has atleast 25degrees of base timing. Still no pinging on that either. It depends on your climate and fuel quality.

ah ok kool, umm whats the best way to test for pinging? basically i chuck it in 5th at about 2g and stomp it. but the thing is the vibration from the car (pulling a high gear) genrally drowns others sounds out, and by the time the vibration seases at about 2- 2.5 grand it doesnt ping. is that ok?

Just wind up all your windows so you can hear just the engine as much as possible then load it up in lower rpms and rev it out like you're doing, 5th is abit overkill, 2nd or 3rd should be fine since its n/a and wont rev out too quick haha.

If you are really worried go to any performance place and ask them to do a dyno power reading, and while they're doing the run stick your head in the engine bay and listen out for it. Probabaly cost you $100 for the run

instead of doing it yourself, take it to a dyno place & put it on for the dyno ($60 or so for 3 runs) and the dynor will listen out for pinging.
