I have been experiencing symptoms of like a grinding/clacking/knocking noise coming from the engine bay, but it only occurs when going up a hill on load at around about 2000rpm and in 3rd gear. I told my mechanic and he suspects without properly diagnosing it that it could be a fuel detonation problem.

Is anyone experiencing this rattle sound? My mechanic recommends using a different brand of fuel like BP instead of Shell.

Has anyone experienced this noise?

Cheers

I haven't had that problem, mind you i always use BP Ultimate, and throw in an octane boost if im feeling rowdy

They run on next to 100% octane in Japan so the closer you get, the better.

If you're in Sydney i can recommend a good mechanic but it'll cost ;)

Which reminds me, if it only happens on a hill, it suggests that perhaps the petrol is falling back in the tank - which is logical.

Perhaps a few engine flush things would clean up whatevers in there - maybe a batch of dodgy petrol!

geeeesh....

my initial thoughts bring me back to 1 month ago...and hearing similar noises in all gears, only under load, (going up a hill or pushing hard), not so much from the engine bay, but more central....the sound also corresponded to the feeling in my clutch pedal and gear knob...(oscillated at the same noise/frequency rate)

$4500 and 2 and a half weeks later, she's fixed!......thanx to a rebuilt gear box.!!!!

Lucky I'm with 24/7 warranties!!

sounds like 3rd gear synchro... happens on most manual cars that has had some sort of 'abuse' in the past... you never knew what the previous owner did back in Japan...

my manual gearbox in the old R33 would easily pop out of gear without clutching in.

also a bad sign it's on the way out. for some reason these problems are almost always on the 3rd gear, no matter what car...

coming to think of it superspit touch wood if it is anything bad im with 24/7 are you based in sydney? Who did you take your car to for that?

In 24/7's instruction book it states that you have to send the coupon every time you service the car with in 30days dated on the invoice. I haven't done that but i will just send in my service history for their records.

just a wild guess but have you checked your engine mounts? often if one of them is cracked or broken you can get interesting noises from the engine bay depending on the load the car is under

Good call on the engine mount - did have some knocking coming from my once when it was uder load but I am sure it was just bad fuel - hasnt happened agian.

Hi T88,

I'm not totally sure about your whole sitch....but I can tell you a little about mine....

I bought the car from an importer with the 24/7 option...it cost me $1980 for 12 months full cover.

My box goes bung a couple of days into the ownership, haven't even had a chance to get it serviced(!)...so back it goes...

(Lucky I have a little 95 Ford Festiva Bomb!).

I get's' the call (why did I put an 's' in there) from Sydney (I'm in Melb) from a lady from 24/7..asking if I was the owner of the 'skyline' that was back at the shop...(she said 'skyline' as if I was a wanker or something, quite derogatory), then asked me 'how long I had had the car for prior to it failing'....(i guess she was trying to establish whether the dealer was being tricky)....whole lot of stuff happens, stuff happens, stuff happens...anyway(s).

I pick up the car, Frank the guy who sold me the car is almost in tears....I said 'sup'...he said my car cost him alot of money......I drive off, and the car is ace.

Yesterday, fuel door actuator f**ks up....(so I put up a post in the V35 section on how I fixed it)..

I'm off now to re-install said actuator.

good luck!...Touch wood!

how many kms have yours done, superspit?

T88turbo, do you always drive it in semi-auto mode till you noticed the problem happens in 3rd gear?

I put mine in drive 99.99% of the time, can't be bothered to shift in daily rush hour traffic.

Hi RS (wot the heck is your name anyway mate, I'd prefer to use that!! lol!..but I'd understand if otherwise...I'm Mark.)

32000kms buddy...and that's spot on and conducive!...she was rating 5 when brought in.

I'm Rianto. real name is on the left hand side under my avatar.

Did u find out What actually went wrong with your box to go bang with only 32,000km?

was it bad servicing?

oh yes..ofcourse..there it is...how bloody stupid of me!

Box?...it was just one of those things...the car is like new....I doubt it's been thrashed...(and I never thrash my cars)

I guess even new cars fark up too...that's why we have warranties.

(Apparently)...The input shaft roller/needle bearing(s) failed...it was just wiggling around in there...causing the slight elongation of the spigot bearing and other stuff...it seemed to stuff the flywheel up too...made a mess of some of the internals.....I can't remember the rest of the explanation....it seemed quite odd.....but one thing failed and seems to have caused a chain-reaction quite quickly.

But at least I got a nice new aluminium flywheel out of it!..still getting use to it's 'action' though.

32000kms????...Yes...Rianto,....I thought/said the same thing, but with a few more expletives included....

These boxes are very strong Rianto, and I saw first hand my gear box pulled to bits....they are a heavy duty piece of engineering....BUT THEY ARE NATURALLY NOISY BOXES....all my past Jap imports have never had a 'quite' box, but then again, I've never broken one either.

My car has 29,000km's on it, sometimes use the tiptronic when i feel like thrashing it a bit, do you guys recommend using this? Don't know if it is risky using the tiptronic.

I actually purchased it from Frank Luxury Performance vehicles same place you bought yours superspit. He is a good bloke and qenuine.

I hardly thrash my car, once a blue moon maybe.

wow Yianni!!!...same place..!

When did u get yours buddy?....is yours the silver one?....(I'm lazy and have done no searches on what you have).

Yes, Frank (and Frank the mechanic) is/are refreshingly honest, .....nice peoples.

Frank's not buying/importing too many cars nowadays, they've actually gone up in price, espesh the V35 units...(exchange rates)...He still does ok with compliancing and servicing, I believe.

What actually (general question) is the 'borderline' for thrashing?.....is it to do with rpm per gear, locking up brakes, accel quickly, not having the car serviced, using the gearbox to slow down while at high speeds constantly????

I know it seems like an odd question, but I just wanted to touch base, and clarify my own interpretations!!..(I'm bored)

Discuss..?

oh crap!...

I should read the rest of the thread before posting - silly me!....

Frank is cool...let me sit in the new white GTR - sexy.

The car I wanted was a premium 6mt model but didnt like the cream leather. There was an automatic sitting nearby which had the black leather. He basically agreed to swap the whole interior for me at no extra cost.

I'd better change the tranny fluid just in case. I feel so much better knowing exactly what oils are in my car.

I had my tranny fluid done @ Nissan (50,000km major service), they told me the fluid was a bit burnt. I guess and I hoped I had it changed before it does any damage to the tranny. So far so good but I hardly ever use it in tiptronic mode.

    • I'd be very surprised if you can buy new OEM mats. But if you can, I want some too!  Do you have links to the variations you found? Also, where are you located? I found that Nengun is happy to list items to purchase but when you do buy them you'll get an email that it's actually discontinued. As far as I know the variations in floor mats are different colour schemes as well as automatic and manual having a slightly different shape. The automatic ones fit into a manual car without issues, but I think you'd have trouble fitting the other way around. I have photos that show the shape difference if you care. FWIW I bought sets of used floor mats in decent condition at yahoo auctions.
    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
