Heyy

Before I ask, yes I've done the research and looked through about 20+ past threads on this question. I've still been unable to find a solution so now im here!

I've got a stock r34 NA exhaust and I want to upgrade to a new system.

I'm not particularly after more power, but rather a nicer tone. However, I don't want to lose power/tourque so a 3" system may be out of the question.

What advice can you give me on a 2.5" exhaust system to get. Where can I find one to buy online? I looked on nengun.com but they didn't have anything. I've considered going to my local exhaust place and getting a custom 2.5" system made up, but I would rather get a quality system (HKS, xforce, blitz etc). I'm after a deep tone with minimal drone with an awesome sound at high revs.

Sound level? Well i'd like to get a silencer but without silencer nothing over 100db

What are my options?

Thanks

Dom

Good luck with finding an aftermarket to suit 2.5" N/A. The only one that I recall seeing marketed for the N/A was a Fujitsubo Legalis R catback from Just Jap. It's marketed as being for an N/A Sedan, though this doesn't confirm the pipe sizing. AFAIK the coupe and sedan catback is the same.

TBH at $1199 +shipping, you could get a very good quality catback system with a good quality and nice sounding muffler set up and hi-flow cat. Add a few hundred more and you've got yourself extractors, cat and catback.

You mentioned that you're not so much after power but rather a nice tone... to be honest if you're prepared to spend the sort of money that aftermarket systems cost, I know I would be wanting more power out of it.

A larger diameter exhaust on an N/A will be louder. The characteristics of an N/A means it's going to be louder as the turbo helps muffle the exhaust.

Just change the rear muffler to get a nice tone, and make sure it's not an el cheapo one that will just make a loud noise and sound bad...if all you're after is a nice tone and not a power increase.

I have one of the Fujitsubo Legalis R systems on my car ( courtesy of the good people at Just Jap ) and it is the only name brand / bolt-on system I could find for an R34 N/A sedan. I "think" Kakimoto make a bolt-on system for the R34 N/A coupe also but you're best to confirm that with Just Jap. FYI, the Fujitsubo Legalis R system on my car has a similar sound to a BMW M3 and the longer you use it, the better it sounds ( as the muffler guts settle ).

But as N-DAWG & Reggi34dr said, the most cost effective way to go is a custom made system but the trick is, finding someone who REALLY knows what they're doing. So many people drive away with a system that looks "OK" & sounds crap and end up going back and getting it chopped up to insert a different resonator etc. and still drive away only sort of happy.

If you're going for a custom system and flow & tone are your main objectives, I would recommend the following.

Get a Cat-Back system made using 2.5" mild steel ( mild steel always sounds better than stainless ). Make sure it's madrel bent ( not press bent ) and get a large high flow ( but low profile ) cross flow resonator fitted where the factory one was, and the rear muffler should be a big, high flow straight through muffler. This usually provides the deepest tone with the lowest cabin noise and should be around the 93-98db range depending on what products are used. Don't forget to either paint in with high temp paint or ceramic coat ( will make it sound even better ) it. It will sound a bit quiet for a while but will develop the right sound in time.

Oh, and as soon as you remove the pea shooter factory system you will find the bottom end torque will dissappear no matter what, but will simply move the torque up closer to the mid-range. Also, your mid range & top end power will increase a bit with a bigger system but don't expect too much.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. Hope it helps :P

And one more point, Coupe & Sedan Cat-Back systems are not the same. The sedan system is longer.

Kakimoto do one - I have a Kakimoto Super Race system fitted - see pic - came with car from Japan - meets legal post-57849-1237496176_thumb.jpgoise criteria

I dunno about bottom end torque disappearing - thats a very big overstatement imo - car still pulls strong even in 5th from as low as 60kph and if you occasionaly pick up 5th from second - not impossible to do as the gating of the gears is not so precise in Skylines and most jap cars - you really don't need to go back to 3 rd in most situations - with the bigger exhaust you certainly get a rush effect from about 90 kph+ in top or in any gear after about 3500+ revs but I think this is more to do with the extraction system and valve timing effects at the higher rev ranges

if you can find one at the right price I say get it

Yeah, "disappear" is a bit strong, but the change is very noticable from take-off.

Oh and Kakimoto actually make 2 dedicated systems for the R34 N/A Coupe :P ( and none for the sedans  )

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I went with TokyoTaxi's suggestion.

custom built 2.5" mild steel. Mandel bent, high flow car, high flow resonator and high flow low profile muffler with 4" tip.

Here's a before and after vid:

Sounds mad ! I love it and by the thumbs up at the end I'm guessing you do too. And as everything settles in etc the sound should get even better

Should sound good under load too. How's the sound from inside the car on the road ?

Sounds horn :)

If your simply after a nice note, STAY AWAY FROM GENERIC BRANDS!

I have a NISMO exhaust and I frequently get comments on the note. I wish I had a video, cos it sounds awesome!

Brand name products are the way to go

whats cabin noise like? sounds tuff tho, you did well

Very sxc exhaust on that 34.

Ive gone with a 2.5 inch mild steel mandrel bend...picked up a second hand muffler....does affect sound, but Im not too fussed. It sounds pretty good. WIll youtube one day.

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
