befor u go and pay $500-$600 for coilpacks, get some heat temp proof silicone and fill in the gaps on your coilpacks so it cant earth out on head instead of on plug. Search coilpack budget mods, you might find pictures.

Hey everyone!!

My brothers R34Gt-t is misfiring when ever you put the foot down a bit. Its fine when hes driving soft, but misfires bad when he tries to go hard. We've already changed the spark plugs and think now that it may be the coilpacks???

Any ideas???

What gap are the new plugs he's using? and what boost is being run?

The issue sounds like coil packs (very common at higher boost levels) but the problem often can be reduced or eliminated by using plugs with a smaller 0.8mm gap (or less depending on boost) as opposed to the std 1.1mm gap.

This worked for me and the insulation of the coil packs didn't, I still have a slight miss and are currently waiting for JJR coils to be back in stock for the R33 S2.

Also Splitfires are great but they are $600+, Super Sparks can be had for $500, JJR have coil packs for $400 (1yr warranty) that do the same job and there are some Yellow Jackets just come on the market for $350 a set (6 month warranty). For my money I'm going for the JJRs - same warranty and result as Splitfires.

does it hesitate coming onto boost? i had a similar issue, also had a dodgy idle, turned out to just be a vac leak. pulled out my coils and they looked brand new!! so just be sure to check everything before spending a few hundred on coils :)

Ive had a set of yellow jackets in my GTST for around 3 months now and they have never missed a beat. They actually come with a 12 month warranty too. Theres a group buy for them here on SAU and they are only $320. So cheaper than JJR, same results as Splitfire and same waranty.

Try coating the coils as already mentioned and see how that works.

Splitfires aren't worth the money unless you aren't very mechanically inclined and/or you want a COP setup like stock. I am in the process of swapping my old coils since the epoxy didn't help in the high rpms. I picked up a set of 8 Chevy Corvette LS2 coils for $125USD and mounted them along the firewall with separate spark plug wires. They should blast the splitfires away and provide adequate spark for whatever I throw at them. Plus they have built in ignitors so I can get rid of my RB25 Series 1 ignitor/power transistor unit (PTU) and wire them directly from the ECU.

Only problem i'v ever had with coils is when one died. Not sure any of the aftermarket ones can offer a much if any greater spark unless you introduce leads in to the equation like above...

before anything, like said before, clean out around the spark plug hole and clean the sleeves then spray it all with silicon spray and i can't see why unless a jacket is damaged you would have problems given that there is not a fault in the coil or wiring itself...

    • Wrong question. There's no point in spending the rather large sum of cash and effort to add turbo, without taking it to the "sensible" limit of the motor itself. If you have to upgrade injectors, etc, then so be it. That is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you to turbo it.
    • Measure voltage at the starter solenoid terminal when the key is at start and it has clicked. If it is really low, then the suspicion falls on the ignition switch (contacts or wiring thereof) as causing a voltage drop instead of sending enough volts to throw the solenoid all the way to engage the starter itself. If it is a decent voltage, then the suspicion is on the solenoid. Might have s horted coil, or might hva dirty contacts. Rip the starter off, dismantle, clean up contacts and inspect winding. It might not be possible to see if there is a short in the winding though. I have a spare starter here that I could measure the resistance of the coil, as a guide to about what it should be, if you need a comparison. <parts hoarder>No you cannot have it.</parts hoarder>
    • lights are on just the one click.  
    • Absolutely matters because, while a temperature change will eventually reach a sensor at the end of a static line, the response time is far far far too slow to be useful. Might as well not have a temp gauge at all.
    • When I was eyeing off the 370GT (after deciding I didn't want to spend 30-40k+ to relive my early 20s in an R33) I thought it'd be a good project to add a turbo to it. Now that I have a 370GT, and I've had a couple of chances to open it up, I'm pretty stunned by how much power it makes 🫠 Honestly, the way the VVEL opens it up, it almost feels like there's a little turbo tucked away in there somewhere. It's like Nissan looked at VTEC and said "hold my beer" 😁 Has anyone thrown a turbo into their 370Z or 370GT? Is there a conservative boost level you can run without having to upgrade the fuel system, or are bigger injectors and a bigger pump a given?
