hey all, im no mechanic or anything, ive dabbled under the bonnet here and there...but anyway.. around 3 years ago i fell in love with the skyline, i didnt care how fast it went or anything, it was just one sexy mofo, anyway...i looked into it more and so on and im well versed in skyline culture now.

Since i fell in love with the car ive been saving my hard earned part time cash for this bloody car (I used to waste it all on my computer), questions..

1. Ive seen some auto models around...whats peoples opinions on auto skylines? cos it was cheap i considered getting one

2...if i do get it and dont like it, how much is it to chuck in a manual transmission?

3. Ive been driving a pissy 87 1.6L corolla around for the past 4 years so anything with any power would be nice, so turbo or n/a...taking into account ive never owned a turbo car before so im not really sure how often youre supposed to service them in comparison to n/a cars..(what are the pros and cons about having a turbo besides having more power?)

4. r32 or r33 ... I prob wont be racing it or anything and im guessing the 32 is more fuel efficient due to the smaller engine size (talking stock stuff here) I initially liked the 33 with the 400r kit but the 32 is cheaper.

5. insurance ... its cheaper to insure the 32 yes? (disregarding mods)

ps. im a tightass and dont want to be spending excessive amounts of dosh on the car..however...i do like goin fast...

Initially i was looking at the $20k mark, but this has since dropped to around 15 when i found out a mate of mine got one for $13k 93 model (not sure if its 32 or 33)

1 & 2. First thing is first. You should decide on what you want. Auto or manual. Buying an auto then converting to a manual wastes time and money. Save yourself the grief. It can be done and has been done, but it's just something you can do without.

3. Service is every 5000k as opposed to 10000k for NA. Also using high quality oils on them is recommended.

4. Don't be shocked when you see the fuel economy. Turbo cars do drink more juice than NA cars. I don't think there's that much difference between a 32 and 33 in terms of fuel economy. Just pick which one you like and can afford.

5. R32 insurance may be cheaper cause it's a cheaper car. Not sure. Call to get a few quotes and work from there.

a skyline is a very expensive car especially if u are a tight ass?

13k for a skyline? u get wat u pay for so dont expect much for 13-15k

insurance WILL KILL U trust me.....iv been quoted up to $10,000 per year from some companies.

also keeping a turbo running is expensive especially if u purchased it for 13k...ull be looking at a new turbo for sure

if its non turbo it shouldnt be too bad insurance is a hell lot cheaper and the odds of the car being thrashd are small

Yeah...my jaw dropped when i heard he got one for 13g ...

I guess the only reason why im a tightass is coz ive been at uni for 3 years at the same time trying to save to get me a skyline.. (finishing in 3 weeks)..so once i get me a nice design job somewhere and i have money, ill loosen up with the dosh ..anyway I might even go for a n/a r33 due to insurance and extra running costs with turbo..

sit in a gts-t or take one for a drive u wont be dissapointed in respect to the money you spend on one..... im selling my car want to get something bigger or beta 350z or sti or wait for the new lancer turbo thats meant to be a weapon......

dont settle for 2nd best cause ya aint gonna be happy....just wait and save and maybe get a series 11 gtst.....

insurance is prob but what can ya do...??? theres a few cheap ones out there do a search 21yrs age gts-t with mods for approx $2500 full comprehensive via famous insurance

If cheap is important then definitely get an auto version. They usually go for $2-5k less than their manual counterparts. Often you can do the manual conversion and still pay less than buying a manual to begin with, but you have to put up with the hassle of the car being off the road for awhile, plus the risk that it might not go 100% smoothly.

As for fuel economy, if it's unmodified it should be pretty light on fuel whether it's an R32 or R33. I just turned in 12.6L/100km on my R33, 100% city cycle, and with the default ECU at 11psi of boost. This is also with a bigass Bosch pump on it so it's running pig-rich.

This is much less than average though because I'm waiting for my PowerFC to arrive and I'm not flooring it very often - not enough power to bother wasting my efforts!

When I was pumping out more power with the S-AFC, I usually got 13.5-14.5L/100km. I expect it to be up there again when I get my PowerFC, but hopefully with more power and a nicer shaped power curve.

ah sweet...thanks for the info JimX....auto+conversion it is ... I dont really care how long its off the road for (been saving for 3 years..whats an extra few weeks)...ill prob get a conversion done on it straight after i get it..:)

    • Looking at the photos, you could easily just drop this pipe and dump into atmosphere  Just 1 or 2 quick hits for data acquisition - if have a heat shield material and/or sheet metal, maybe just use wire/metal cable ties and attach it in a way to deflect heat from melting nearby wires.
