hey,

anyone care to give me a brief idea of what symptoms id expect for worn synchros?

when i change mainly from 2nd to 3rd (and sometimes 1 to 2nd) i can feel contact similar to when its attempted without the clutch fully depressed. I can also force this by coasting, clutch fully depressed, and move between say second and third there is a definate point of crunch.

Sound like synchros or more like the clutch no disengaging enough?

Yeah i got no idea.... wouldnt mind attempting to having a vague idea before i take it to a mechanic and get screwed.

Is the clutch engage point near the floor or near the top of the pedal travel. If its near the floor, it could be out of adjustment and be causing the problem you are describing.

If it's mid way or near the top then this is not your problem.

Line clamp the slave cylinder flex hose and then put your put firmly on the pedal. Note if it sinks or is immediately solid.

If it is solid, the the master cylinder is going to be ok. Check the slave cylinder has minimum 12mm of travel when the clutch is depressed. If you have at least 12mm of travel and the slave pushrod is not sinking back into the cylinder, then the problem could eaither be:

A grabbing spigot

A misaligned/bent clutchplate

Worn Synchros

This is most likely gear synchros - second and third are always the first to go because they are the most commonly used and frequently abused gears. Clutch related problems typically show these symptoms in all of the gears as opposed to one or two.

Does it make the crunch sound on downshift? If so, try double clutching it to see if this gets rid of the sound. If it does then it is definitely worn synchros. The usual go with it is a gearbox recondition. Budget about $1300-1500 for the lot.

That is true but poor hydraulic pressure will actually emphasize a slightly worn synchro, even though it may not be near the end of it's life. And it is not so good to assume his synchros are at fault even though it is probably the most likely cause.

I use a little chart on my wall that says "Skyline gearbox crunching = thrashed synchros". To date it has never let me down :D

But I accept your point is plausible. Low gearbox oil can produce similar symptoms too.

Down shift doesnt seem as bad but not much difference to be honest. Does the same this coasting, along clutch, in between 3 and 4th. Doesnt seem to matter what gear. I can find a spot where it grinds.

Clutch take up point is around the middle to upper end. If the car is rolling say at walking pace (or even less), it doesnt like being given first gear as easily.

Anyhow, ive got around 200kw atw now so im more than likely pushing the boundaries of the stock clutch. Change that next week. whatever can handle up to 250kw or thereabouts. and do gearbox oils aswell with something decent. f**king expensive to reco a gearbox $1500 bucks!!! oh well we'll see i guess

So it is crunching in all gears then? If this is the case it is probably a clutch issue...synchros usually give way to only one or two gears crunching. The fact you have that much travel in your clutch pedal before contact...your pressure plate may be severely worn or you have air in the hydraulic lines?

in my r33 4th gear does it even if im just cruising slowly through gears but i can avoid it my double clutching, also does it down shifting from 5th to 4th, i know....its fked haha but can you just get 4th reconditioned for cheaper cos were not all made of money or am i up for the whole shabam?

You can get just 4th gear repaired but it's not very good practice to just repair a box and put it back together with old seals and bearings. Weakens the tolerances of the gearbox and the thing will probably need to be pulled apart again in a few thousand km simply because another bearing will fail.

    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
