Just installed an amp and I'm having amplifier engine noise problems. I've done searches and will try and figure it out but I was just wanting to confirm which side of the vehicle is best for running the RCAs?

I've got them down the passenger side at the moment (cleverly running right past the ECU!), is this the best way?

Also, I've got nice heavy 4GA power/ground lines on the amp, do I need to mess with the wiring on the pioneer head unit? (I'm thinking not?)

Car is a 33 gtst.

Cheers,

John

G'day John,

Damn these R33 GTS't are so bad for engine whine :) I've got the same problem....

I reduced mine by running the RCA's as far away from any power source as I could. For me that meant running the RCA's up the middle of the car. Not sure if this is the best but......

I also put a power filter on the head uint which didn't do much, so it must be getting into the low level stuff feeding the amp.

I also found that if you earth everthing really well it seems to help reduce the whine.

Anyone else had much luck ??

J

I ran mine down the passenger side, have had no problems. Where did you mount the amp and where did you ground it to ?

At the moment the amp is just screwed into the base shelf of the boot (carpeted MDF). It's grounded (4GA) at the same point the battery is grounded, and the power (4GA) comes straight from the battery terminal via a fuse.

Don't ground it to the same one as the battery. This can cause problems, also what brand amp are you using? some of the cheaper kind and really bad for nosie. A friend of mine had a cheap amp with a really bad whine through it, then he upgraded to a decent amp, noise gone, and we didn't change the wiring at all.

I'll try moving the ground and see what happens.

The amp is one of those Jaycar AA-4035 4x100W rms amps (being discontinued and on sale at the moment for anyone who's interested). A cheap amp compared to some brands but they're supposed to be ok as far as I know...

Anyone else out there with one of these amps who's not having problems and can let me know how they've wired it up?

i just recently did an instal (which amp for my 2x 12"subs post). Mine sounds awsome, no whining noise what so ever, and HUGE bass & clarity, I'm running Rockford Fosgate head unit, earthquake 6" splits front Via old Sony EMX700 2 channel amp(soon to be upgraded to Soundstream RUB 300-2), rear stockie clarion paper cones running off head unit, and 2 x 12" orion subs off a Soundstream RUB500-2 2 channel amp. Both amps are in the boot right next to the battery, RCA leads I ran down both sides of the car, passenger side for front splits amp and drivers side for sub amp. remote wire for both amps down passager side, LH split speaker wire down passanger side to amp, RH split speaker wire down drivers side to amp. Earth to car body, power through fuse then to a slit block to provide power to both amps.

May or maynot be worth mentioning that my R33 came with a top quality earthing kit throughout the car, wheather or not this makes a diference or not im not sure?

Seems to have sorted itself out, I just cable tied the rcas and moved things around a bit and I can't hear it anymore.

I've not had car sound running off a seperate amp before, speakers sound amazing. The amp in the Pioneer 6450 headunit was apparently really really bad at any kind of volume, and had me wondering about my shiny new JL audio 6x9s. (The inbuilt amp in my old bottom of the line sony head unit seemed to pump out much cleaner power than the pioneer)

    • Welcome to Skyline ownership. Yes, it is entirely possible parts websites get things wrong. There's a whole world of inaccuracies out there when it comes to R34 stuff (and probably 33 and 32). Lots of things that are 'just bolt on, entirely interchangable' aren't. Even between S1 and S2 R34's. Yes they have a GTT item supposedly being 296mm. This is incorrect. I would call whoever you got them from and return them and let them know the GTT actually uses 310mm rotors. Depending on where you got them from your experience and success will obviously vary.
    • Hi...a bit a "development" on the brakes. I spoke to the guys where i get brakes from...and they are saying that 296mm EBC are for R34 GT-T. I then went to their site: https://www.ebcbrakes.com/vehicle/uk-row/NISSAN/Skyline (R34)/ and search for my car(R34 GT 1998 - it has GTT brakes) and it show me this USR1229 number and they are rly 296mm rotors... So now iam rly confused... The rotors i have now on the car are 310mm asi shown... So where is the problem? Does the whole EBC got it wrong or my calipers are just...idk know what?
    • Oh What the hell, I used to get a "are you sure you want to reply, this thread is XX months old" message. Maybe a software update remove that. My bad.
    • This is a recipe for disaster* Note: Disaster is relative. The thing that often gets lost in threads like this is what is considered acceptable poke and compromise between what one person considers 'good' looks and what someone else does. The quoted specs would sit absurdly outside the guards with the spacers mentioned and need  REALLY thin tyres and a LOT of camber AND rolling the guards to fit. Some people love this. Some people consider this a ruined car. One thing is for certain though, rolling the guards is pretty much mandatory for any 'good' fitment (of either variety). It is often the difference between any fitment remotely close to the guards. "Not to mention the rears were like a mm from hitting the coilovers." I have a question though - This spec is VERY close to what I was planning to buy relative to the inboard suspension - I have an offset measuring tool on the way to confirm it. When you say "like a mm" do you mean literally 1mm? Or 2mm? Cause that's enough clearance for me in the rear :p I actually found the more limiting factor ISNT the coilover but the actual suspension arms. Did you take a look at how close those were?
    • @GTSBoy yeah sorry i know thery are known for colors bud those DBA are too in colors 🙂 Green will be good enough for me
