Hey guys got a stock as a rock r30 skyline (1984) with the 2.4e , kinda surprised at how well it goes for an old auto but kinda wanting to get some more out of it.

Wondering what i can do without spending a fortune. I also just recently got my hands on a complete rb30 skyline, could i just go and do an engine and gearbox swap?

cheers

You are in an NA skyline. This question has been asked 9999999999999 times.

Even if yours is an old R30, you still won't get decent power or torque (which is probably more important anyway) without spending an absolute fortune. Use your money on better things other then the engine. No if's or but's about it.

If you want power without spending ALOT of money, your only option is Nos.

If this isn't a good enough answer, look at the other 10000 topics that people have made asking the same question. Use the search bar.

  • 2 months later...

haha Like i keep telling my brother... save your cash, get your full lisence ( if your on your P's no offence) and buy something with potential to start with... trust me its more trouble then its worth

oh come on! the old r30s go well enough with a bit of love. its not about the $$ its about the time you have to do the work... if you know how. lol.

if it already had manual trans then you can drop a heap of gear in it with not a great deal of conversion work so there! :P

i have the model before yours with same engine but with carburettor.

Best thing for more power imo, is converting engine to use to use a R31 RB30E Loom and ECU + Nistune Chip

Get a distributor with a CAS from a turbo L20ET or L28ET so it can see crank angle.

Then either tune so AFR's are all sweet or get a turbo manifold from a L20ET or L28ET bolt it on with a turbo and get RB30E ecu tuned to suit.

I may possibly go in this direction eventually.

    • How dare you sell your unreliable Skyline and buy a reliable, Toyota/Yamaha car with a strong gearbox, torsen LSD and Toyota reliability. At least you won't need to worry about oil pumps, big catch can, oil restrictors, blowing off power steering belts, sheering off 3rd gear, failing ABS relays/pumps, etc.
    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
