Hey Gurus and Gurettes, my front/ rear torque gauge thing(to the left side of cluster) doesn't respond and sometimes my rear tyres screech around corners, does this mean I'm only running 2wd? I havnt pushed her too hard yet so pretty important to knOw.

Update;

Ok, silly me. all this talk about fuse breakers made me do the obvious.. CHECK MY FUSES!! Turns out my(under the hood) 4wd fuse was put in the empty spot nxt to where it should have been. It look intact so I went to put it in place(with ignition off obviously) and I could hear a buzzing from the rear of the car so I panicked and pulled it. Is this normal? Can any of u gurus work out why he would have moved the fuse out of line? Cheers all.

Jesse.

That's what I thought, Bubba.. I'm gonna have a go flushing and bleeding the system today and I'll see what happens. The previous owner said there was a leak somewhere is the system, does anyone know of a weak spot or somewhere it's most likely to leak from?

Hi all, I'm still stuck here, any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

I will start from the beginning and hopefully someone here has experienced this before or can suggest trouble shooting methods.

When I bought my 89 GTR(as even more of a skyline noon than I currently am!) the previous owner told me the 4wd function wasn't working properly and had been "switched off" by a nissan mechanic due "a leaking switch". He was leaving for nz for a few weeks the next morning so I bought it on the spot(impulse buy and a half). Having read countless pages on the attessa system on both this site and others I began my own basic troubleshooting.

1. Fuses: cabin 4wd fuse is intact. In-bonnet 4wd fuse intact but moved to the "spare" fuse slot! Tried the fuse in position with my keys in my hand and immediately heard a buzzing sound from roughly under the rear seats. Not knowing what this was I quickly pulled the fuse out again.

2. Fluids/reservoir: Checked my attessa fluid level(thanks BWRGTR!) which was very low. Got some TQ-DIII to fill with and ended out pulling the entire reservoir out with the hoses so I could drain it fully and clean it off. The previous owner also mentioned there might be a leak in the attessa tank itself and this looked believable by the residue on it and the hoses. After close inspection I was sure it must have just been spilt when filling. Refitted.

3. Filling and bleeding: Followed the DIY by Black R32(thanks dude!) but wanted to get some fluid through the system before getting the attessa motor going. Filled the reservoir through the top filler cap pretty much to the top. Now I wasn't sure how to bleed the fluid into the bottom half of the reservoir. First tried loosening the bleeding nipple on the nipple closest to the front of the car and had abOut 30ml of what looked like this come out..

Next I disconnected the air bleed connector plug with the bleeding point cracked and then tried the fuse in the engine bay again. It is important to note that when the fuse is properly inline the Attessa pump can be heard buzzing and does not stop so after a few seconds I pulled the fuse back out. This time the reservoir was half empty meaning some of the fluid had bled somewhere. I refilled reservoir and went to repeat the steps. This time though the fuse was stuck in the fuse box and the pump ran for about 15 seconds then stopped. Once I got the fuse out I saw the reservoir level had barely changed, nothing more had bled from under the car but now there was sh1tloads of(still fairly clean, red) the tranny fluid running down most sides of what I think is my rear diff..!

Diagnosis: Guys, what have I possibly broken/blown up here?

Being that the fluid running was the fluid I had just put in, it is probably attessa only related and therefore car can still be driven in RWD? If this is the case could it have already have been leaking and maybe the leak Old Mate who used to own the car was talking about?

Any which way, has anyone ever been through this or would know the best way to begin dealing with this? Important, I don't own ramps so this work was done with my rear wheels on a kerb thus my vague description of where it's leaking from.

Thankyou to ANYONE who stuck through my novel this far. :) cheers especially if anyone has light to shed on this problem I have.

Jesse.

should be, pull the fuse marked 4wd in the engine bay

did u find out what was leaking - diff??

best to take to workshop so u can look under the car properly, red fluid could the attessa fluid leaking and u might be able to fix the leak the previous owner was talking about

Well guys, got front wheels on a kern and back on ramps and I could get under it. This is what I'm pretty sure is leaking looking up diagonally toward the back of the car in just above the diff. I assume attessa. :(

So diff out and replace? Doesn't sound doable in my driveway.. Has anybody done it here? What's involved?

Thanks for the input guys. :)

Jesse.

    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
    • Welcome mate. Any pics? Even with a DE I'd be well happy if I had that as a 1st car.
