2540 rated at aprox 340ps at 1bar i think

2835 rated at aprox 360ps at 1bar

I think steve said the hks turbs are all measured at 1 bar. So u could wind more boost into the car easily. Also search the forums, think someone a while ago had a huge post about his 250rwkw r32 with rb20.

theres a few shops around here that sell good second hand turbos. Speak to someone like D1garage. they will give u good advice on what is best for u. then if u want they can source a turbo for u. other then that, look on ebay, these forums, and other shops in adelaide, like hikari performance, city jap parts have cheap turbos all the time.

I have seen a 2530 on RB20 make 230 at 1.2bar with 8200rpm redline. It was James (D1 Garage) cefiro, and it went bloody hard - you are looking at an easy 12 second car with that sort of power. Jut be aware that your gearbox may not like it too much, so make sure your tyres arent too sticky:)

With a 2530 you will get a big fat midrange and will come on boost early (ish). 2835 on grepins car is making 274 at 1.3bar, but will have alot more lag than a 2530.

It depends on your driving style. If you dont mind a bit of lag, go a 2835 (or even a T518Z) - if you want something with more down low, go a 2530. anther one to consider is the 2535, but once again it will have more lag than a 2530.

Having 8.5:1 CR, you can run 1.5+bar all day with a good tune and be very safe - so no probs there.

D1 Garage sell a new HKS2530 with ALL the bits (oil line fittings, water line fitting, snout for outlet, actuator (I think), etc, etc) for $3K. Second hand you may be able to save around 1K or a bit more, but for peace of mind, and so you dont end up having to buy more and more bits to make it fit - the new kit is pretty good value for money IMHO.

Give them a call, or better still drop in and see them - James lived in Japan for 4 years, has heaps of connections over there, has seen alot of different setups, and I am sure he will be able to help find the right turbo for what you are after. He has saved me a fortune, as I originally met him looking for an RB25DE head for a 3L conversion. After chatting to me, he talked me out of it, as he assured me I didnt need to go that path for what I was after. Tell 'em I sent you too, more discounts for me later:p.

  • 2 weeks later...

i went into D1 garage and they had a greddy boost gauge (second hand) for $120. also a mate of mine bought the same gauge (same model gauge not the actual one) off them a few months before for $120. So i went back to buy it for $120 and they jacked up the price to $150 and wouldnt budge (yes it is the exact same one), even know the had it on the net still saying $120. i had $150 but thats not the point so i didnt buy it, this sh!ts me abit.

    • I don't know, I've never done it that way, but 1. While it is an interference engine, there is still clearance between the valves and the piston at all points in the regular timing cycle 2. There is not a lot of distance before you can't catch the top of the valve stem any more I don't know if 2 is greater or less than 1. But 3. If it doesn't work out you are f**ked, engine is coming out to disassemble so it is a big bet.
    • Semi slicks are horrible for road use, just use a high performance road tyre unless you really need the maximum grip. Noisy, unpredictable (amazing, until they are not), expensive due to very high wear and not good in cold and particular wet. And yes, it is a thing to store cars on stands instead of tyres if you know they are going to be parked up long term.....but who ever realises that a short park is going to stretch into years before it is out again!
    • I know in Australia you'll definitely get above 30c. Parked in the shade in Summer you'll be above that. 😛 But in cooler climates, you might get that warm driving on the highway for a bit, but you'd never get to full heat temp. I'll try and find some of my historical tyre temps between Aus summer and winter (be aware immin the warmer area of Aus too.)
    • I get that taking off the head is best but that's a bit much for "just" valve seals. I was just under the impression that one would be able to rotate to TDC and be able to temporarily drop the valve without losing it and effectively having to remove the head to then recover it. I never knew people actually pushed rope into the cylinder to do valve seals hahaha So just to confirm, just going to TDC will not work? In that case I know when I do valve seals I'll maybe just remove the head and do some other things while I'm there, or just wait until I do an engine build.
