The JZX100 (or the later models of it) use a 1JZ single turbo same as the late model Soarers (as the early ones use a twin setup). Both the late soarers and the Chaser also have VVTI. Essentially they are the same engine.

In terms of twin setups.. I'm assuming you're talking about Japan as theres barely any JZX100's in Australia... if you are yes it has been done many times over. I disagree with the comment that people buy single turbos because they are "cheaper". A turbo conversion is not a cheap exercise either way but consider why someone may buy two singles as opposed to a large single on a GTR. They'll have different characteristics in responsiveness, power, lag etc etc.

I wonder what happens to the engine management system if, say, one wants to convert a twin turbo setup on a supra to a single turbo setup. Does aft ECU like PowerFC can be used to control a twin turbo setup and/or single turbo interchangeably?

Maybe you're right, this will be extra $$$ involved changing the ECU when you converse twin to single turbo/vice versa?

On the other hand, if Toyota decides to abandon the twin turbo setup will that be due to production cost/meeting emission requirement in Japan?

I think JapLink in NSW already start importing JZX100 to aus, but hey, I dunno, check with them. HPI said their phone no is 02-97160857. Do they have a website btw?

I'm 99% sure that the JZX100 is already a single setup.

Anyway the Chaser has already been discontinued in Japan as of this year. I think all 2JZ and 1JZ engines are being discontinued.. some already are such as the JZA80 Supra, Mark 2 I believe has also been discontinued. Yes these engines are being discontinued for emissions. No idea about production cost.

Yes if you buy an aftermarket turbo you should buy a new ECU. Its not really as simple as just changing a setting on the handset I think. With different turbos you probably need to upgrade different things. For example in a GTR if you edn up getting a single conversion it is usually a pretty big turbo. This means upgading a lot more things than just the turbo.... such as intercooler, ECU, injectors and the whole fuel system like fuel pump an regulators etc, AFM's lots of things..... in order for all these things to be tuned properly aftermarket ECU is needed.

So what r they gonna use to replace 2JZGTEs then? Is Nissan also abandoning the RB engine soon? Looks like the death of the turbo era :D **sigh** I read that R35 skyline (or V35 callit whateva) would not likely to be turbocharged.... I wouldn't mine tho if they pack all these cars with V8, V10 or V12 & 400kw inside heheheh

I can't remember the replacement. But many of the toyota turbo models such as the Mark2, Laurel and Chaser have been merged into a few models that bridge the gap between the different kinds of cars...... none of the engines are turbo... YET!

I THINK the RB's have already been discontinued... the V35 at the moment has an atmo engine.... dunno if turbos are on the horizon...

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
