Hey all.

I've been a long time reader of this forum, but a minimalist poster.

I have just moved from Darwin down to Newcastle and as such am interested in what workshops people would recommend.

I'm also keen if anyone knows of some good body/paint shops as my car could also use some freshening up.

Any way a bit about my car,

Picked it up from a forum member a couple of years back.

Its a gunmetal 92 BNR32 that was fairly stock.

It had on it:

-eibach springs

-bilstein shocks

-greddy adjust. cam gears

-Apexi dry pod filter setup

-hicas lockbar

-3' stainless exhaust with 3.5' veilside(i think) muffler

-some generic looking torque split (basically a toggle for normal/variable with variable been controlled by a resister pot or something)

car was running @ 1 bar making 230rwkw.

drove it to darwin from bendigo via adelaide-alice springs etc. got some sweet photos on the trip with Uluru etc as a backdrop.

but ultimatly once it was in darwin, i noticed that on coming onto boost is was detonating :ermm:

so i took it to what was supposed to be a good workshop, who proceeded to basically balls it up more.

They reckoned my fan was rooted, so they installed a craig-davies thermo after removing the standard. and then proceeded to tune it up. they chucked new plugs in etc and

got the tune to 260rwkw. I thought this was sounding a bit suss, since the last tune(230rkwk) had been done by ben @ racepace, and i was finding it a bit funny that a new set of plugs would

gain over his tune. but anyway this all took a while, as if anyone lives in darwin, you'll know that time doesnt seem to be a big factor up there.(seems like everydays a friday so takes an eon to get anything done)

so finally got the call to pick it up, the mechanic tells me when i get there i've got a blown head gasket. I was like wtf do u want me to do about it, i thought car was ready to be picked up. He was no longer willing to work on it due to other commitments though.

Oh and got my ecu modded with nistune while at the garage.

Car was running like a POS, and i eventually found another shop to look at it.

They stripped the engine down, found low comp in two cylinders, stuffed rings which had caused scorring of the bores and no.6 piston had a nice chunk out of its crown.(dont know where it ended up, as valves were fine apparently)

After they stripped it down i got a call of this shop telling me that unforseen circumstances had caused them to shut their doors. ARGH FFS. so got the car onto a flatbed along with all the pulled out bits and got it taken to another place just down the road.(was the place who were actually going to get the 'sub-contract' to rebuild the engine, who luckily accpeted the whole reinstall job)

So with that all sorted out the rebuild began.

list of new stuff that went into motor:

-CP forged pistons

-Argo rods

-ARP studs

-Tomei valve guides

-full gasket set(head gasket aswell)

-new timing kit (looks like a gates belt with all new pullies etc)

-new standard oil pump

-new water pump

-new mechanical clutch fan with shroud(turns out the thermo previously installed was an a/c condenser thermo and not up to the job)

-2xGarrett 2860-7's

-Tomei expreme dumps

-Eboost2 controller.

there maybe other stuff but cant remember atm.

The block had its bores honed, crank linished valves ground reseated and a hep of other little details.

and turns out the first workshop had installed the wrong type of spark plugs. so got some platnium tipped from memory

The build went together pretty no fuss from what i could figure it out with the only problem after i had picked it up being a loose powersteering connection and a bent dipstick. they were quickly fixed and then i took it over to get a tune at High tech tuning.

The tune had some hiccups with my attessa system playing up wich was found to be the g sensors in the centerconsole. after some resoldering the problem was still there so ended up ripping out the torque split controller which seemed to fix the issue.

Anyway tune made 245rwkw @ 1bar, and looking at the dynograph think that the speedlimiter cut in as from memory the readout seems to fall/stop before redline.

was pretty happy with that at the time, and that pretty much brings us up to the move to newcastle.

Got a few things that im keen to get done to the car, these mainly being:

-new coilpacks (probably get some splitfires)

-oil cooler and filter relocation kit

-new injectors(as currently on std's)

-upgrade to rest of fuel system (am unsure as to what i need to do, hi flo pump etc)

-new intercooler (mines collected a few stones and a bird on its trips)

-intake hard piping kit.

-either z32 afm's or nismo ones i think.

and finally wind a bit more boost into it.

Cosmettically car is not too bad but has a few flaws from the rough darwin sun.

The bonnets clear coat on the front left has gone and paint underneath has had it. and the paint on the roof is quite dull now.(will see if i can claybar is and cut it back to bring it up tho)

other then that its got some gravel rash on the front bar and paint of on the drivers door handle.

Sorry for the wall of text, i get carried away sometimes, but anyhelp for a good workshop and bodyshop in the newcastle region would be great.

Thanks,

Fatroll

    • Hey keep the ideas coming, I'm always keen on projects! But, problem fixed!  I got a cheapie ozito scope from Bunnings and had a good look in and around the bearing and sensor hole. I couldn't see a smoking gun but the bearing looked a bit strange, especially when comparing with a new one. I thought the cover had come off the bearing magnets.  Sorry for pics of a screen, I didn't have an SD card.     Good thing I had the old one to inspect. So, given I'm like a pit crew with wheel bearings and luckily I had a spare bearing because I f**ked up my parts order, I decided to just smash it out. Got the old one out in about an hour. So much easier when the parts haven't had a chance to rust together yet. 😂 And, well, found the problem.    In the second pic at about the 8 o'clock position, you'll see what I think is the tip of the old sensor.  The new sensor has definitely been rubbing but it's all intact, just a little shiny so I'm hoping it's fine.  The car brakes perfectly now and no errors.  I think the job took about 2.5h in the end. 👍🏻 I really appreciate the help in here as usual. Thanks guys.
    • I was only looking because I saw some drops on the ground but it wasn't alot. Recently had it serviced will ask the mech to confirm. Find it strange that it looks standard though, can see in another photo of a random box
    • So...not sure if you know if that has always been there or why you went looking. It could be old damage from a clutch explosion, or even just the gearbox got dropped somewhere along the line. Basically, you should seal it up to stop oil and dust getting into the bellhousing, but it doesn't matter too much and is not structural. I'd suggest something like a glob of JB Weld. BTW what gearbox oil are you running, I would guess the breather has been spewing it everywhere.
    • Hey Duncan thanks for your reply. Sorry mate I know the photos are shit.  Took another photo for reference. Seems the casing does have a hole in it looking on the net, fluid seeping out. Added a photo
