Hay everyone.

Thought i better introduce myself before i start throwing out random questions.

My name is Troy.

copyrighted 1989

From Perth WA

Last Aug i bought myself my first car R34 Gtt, pretty stock.

Power FC

Apexi air filter

Nismo body kit

Yellowjacket coil packs

Tein Coil overs

Some filthy BBS rims.

Greddy Profec B Spec 2

Some fully sick stickers and headlight lids.

stock white.

nothing amazing really.

I signed up to SAU because i think my stock turbo just blew up and i need some help diognosing. :(

This is what happened:

In order

161000kms

Turbo was making some pretty retarded noises. To help you understand what the noises were try pressing spacebar + M + D on your keyboard, all in one second as many times as you can, you will sort of get the sound my turbo was making.

Small puff of white smoke out of the exhaust.

Wont idle properly

Wont get past 1500rpm just cuts out and nearly stalls.

Smell rich.

Checked intercooler pipes and a few other things, cant really see very well and dont want to pull it all apart cause it wont fit in my garage at the moment.

Some dudes in a black 4 door 34 saw it first hand, no doubt they had a little giggle, i would have. :P

Im on a tight budget so ill probably search around for a while and find out what all the other cheap kids are doing.

Wouldn't mind a bit more power, but im sure that comes at a cost.

If anyone has some suggestions feel free to share them, im gonna jump on the search function and find a solution.

I also love/rode sports bikes, just sold my 05 R1, time to get into motorcross.

Cheers!

Oh and i work at Mack 1 kawasaki in midland so hit me up if you need something.

What colour is the smoke that's blowing out the back? Does it sound like a suby? Is the engine shaking? Ummm, any knocking noises?

If you do find out your turbo is stuffed, hit me up if you just want a cheap replacement to get you around.

The smoke color was white then black.

Engine knock hasn't really changed. (power fc)

It sounds like: RB rev, splutter, splutter die. :(

i just started it again, it does kinda sound like a suby.

It got to 3000 rpm This morning..

Im actually hoping to get my hands on a Kinugawa. I heard good things, and dont want to go anything above $1000.

Hmmm... In all honesty it sounds like a vac leak. When it happened did you hear a distinct popping noise?

Also what do your plugs look like? I would say they would be black with carbon build up.

You should definately check all intercooler pipes.

So i spent this after noon pulling everything out.

Checking pipes and hoses and everything i could possibly check, didn't find anything.

Untill this...

    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
    • Thanks @jtha7 I will have a look around tomorrow but it is a prick of a spot. These are some photos i tried taking
    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
