Automotive inspection in Jpn?

As the subject said, I often heard about the compulsory automotive inspection in Japan (Shaken). What is this? what's being involved, and beside fuel is this the largest cost to own a car in jpn? (Spending $ on mods does not count)

With Shaken, car get checked (as Troy said) for roadworthyness. My father-in-law said he got defected for a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g... windscreen wiper blades, rubber door surrounds, fuel filler caps etc. A typical inspection on a "not very well" kept car could set the owner back 2-300,000 yen in repairs.

This is one of the reasons why you get such cheap used cars in Japan, the owners run the shaken out with a modified and abused car, then sell it just before Shaken is up... at a fraction of the price they bought it for, all because returning it back to standard and/or going through Shaken will cost big bucks.

The other big cost in Japan with owning a car is... parking (if you don't live in a house - Dave you lucky bugger! :D)

:D Yep - I should start renting parts of my garden out - could make a fortune ;)

I've never had any shaken troubles, even with my old (riced up :D) civic. More recently since I've been driving skylines I've become pretty well known at my local garage and they usually sort my cars out without added expensive or hassle. That said, next year the R34 will be up and I heard that I'll probably have to piss about swapping my clear lenses back over to amber ones....:(

Has anyone hear done a self-shaken?

ic... thks for the info...

Is "Shaken" a japanese word? What does it mean?

Also what mods are still legible to be passed under the inspection?

Pods? Aftermarket turbo? FMIC? BOV? Gauges on A-pillar? Steering wheel?

Dave...they wont do you for the clear lenses....maybe!

The good thing is they don't really look at mechanical mods. At least they didn't with me.

    • Hey Kaz, Unfortunately I am not at home currently and wont be for a few more months so I do not have access to my files or CAD. And at this point I prefer to keep the files to myself as I want to potentially make a few more pairs and see if they will sell within the EU before openly marketing them. But the way it's shaped and how small it is, I don't think you can fit both an indicator and a fog light onto the same surround, unless they were very small LED-type clusters.
    • I’ve just installed a Uniclutch sport into my R32. I’ve been blown away by it… it drives like a stock Toyota Corolla. It doesn’t make sense to me that a performance clutch can drive this well. I was about to pull the trigger on a Nismo Coppermix twin plate when I discovered the Uniclutch and decided to give that a shot instead. They’ve changed the game and I couldn’t be happier.    I was previously using an Extreme cushioned button clutch with lightened flywheel. I’m still using the same lightened flywheel with the Uniclutch.
