i have a series 1 r33 gtst. all stock except for intake. even stock exhaust.

problem:

-skyline has trouble starting. and only starts by pumping the accelerator while cranking.

it will take about 3-4 cranks. it starts very slowly, then rpms shoot to about 1700 and immediately come back down to about 900. idles perfectly fine.

-also, as soon at it starts theres a sharp squeel from the belt, i think the alternator belt.

-theres also a wierd 'kuuuuurrrrk' noise from inside the engine bay, not exactly sure what it is, but it only happens after the cranks that dont start the car (the first 2-3 cranks).

-there are also backfires during the start-up, nothing crazy tho.

changed spark plugs.

new battery.

cleaned aac valve. (idles nicer now, but same starting issue)

once started, the car idles perfectly fine, and drives really good. smooth. at a stop, continues to idle fine. no stuttering or anything. never died on me. but once i turn it off, i will again need to use the accelerator to start it, but it usually starts 1-2 cranks, although still a bit laggy. if i leave the skyline for a couple hours or more, then same original problem.

i took some videos as well, i can email them if requested.

ive done alot of reserach, countless hours. people that seem to be having this issue also have problems keeping the car running, where it will die at a stop etc etc. however, my car runs perfect, only has starting issue.

if anyone can help, id really appreciate it!

thanks!

what happens if you let the fuel pump prime before you try and start the car?

might be worth changing the fuel filter.

other possible issues are the CAS, AFM, intake leak. another plausible cause is the cold start valve (linked to the AAC, but down under the intake manifold). or simply that your fuel pump is on it's way out. putting it on a dyno would help rule that one out.

ive let the fuel pump prime, doesnt help. but i still need to pump the accelerator or else the car will keep crankning and rpms wont rise at all.

i dont understand why the car idles/runs fine, but on start up its very very laggy.

wouldn't the CAS, AFM or an intake leak also cause the skyline to not run properly? others that have had issues with these parts also complained about running rough, stuttering, dying while idling, etc.

if i HAVE to pump the acceelerator while cranking, could the issue still be electrical? or would it be mechanical??

thanks for your help :)

may be an issue with the TPS (or where it's set) as well. and the car may run ok, but that may not rule out there being an issue with one of those things. they may just be within the range of tollerance when running, but not starting.

may also be an issue with fuel pressure.

maybe try doing a fault code check on the ecu. worst case scenario is that you have low compression. but i think your issue is more of a fuel related issue.

do you have the stock boost gauge still working? if you do then you have a SERIOUS intake leak and that is what is causing your problem. if you have an aftermarket boost gauge, what sort of vacuum do you get at idle? if it isn't up around -20 then you have a vacuum leak.

i'd also sort out that squealling belt. if that is on the alternator then it probably isn't helping the situation, especially if it is caused by the alternator being a bit suspect. it would be making the car harder to start if it (or another belt driven accessory) is a bit siezed.

i would also start with a new battery and make sure that it is the appropriate CCA for a skyline so that it has enough juice to turn the car over at the right speed. unless you had been doing a lot of attempts at starting the car before the first video, and a fair few after, then the battery should've been fine. so it points towards a weak battery as part of the problem (or a failing alternator)

    • Ok i will get those 310mm. I found one but on a different site. This is the description on those...is it ok? Technical parameters: - Axle: front. - Disc type: ventilated. - Number of holes: 5. - Disc diameter: 310mm. - Total height with center: 54mm. - Thickness (new/min.): 30/28mm. - Designed for brake calipers manufacturer: Sumitomo.
    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
