Hey guys,

Been a while since I posted here, I finally decided to get off my backside and do some work on my 89 R31 Wagon. Mostly because I have a power steering leak that's not so great.... It's now at the point where there is no power steering at all (all occurred within 1 day and seems like a pretty bad leak) and I need some help with it.

I am a little confused as to exactly where the leak is. I have determined roughly which hose it's coming from. Basically on the power steering reservoir there are two hoses, one smaller one that leads from the side of the reservoir down past the engine and ends up at the front left of the engine bay near the air filter box and roughly sits next to the radiator going down further into the engine bay. I assume that hose is the return hose and is a low pressure hose (there are some smaller metal tubes that attach to the rubber hoses along the way) and I assume that the other fatter hose running from the bottom of the reservoir is the high pressure hose that sucks the fluid?

If I am right in the above description of my hoses I have a leak where there is a bracket that is attached to the engine bay near the radiator where the low pressure rubber hose meets a metal line. My confusion is really which hoses are which and the best way to replace them. I can take pictures tomorrow during the day to better describe/show you where the leaks are if it'll help.

As long as I have my hoses right I assume I can simply remove the faulty rubber hose (if the rubber hose is the issue) and just get some new one from places like Repco/Enzed and put them back in quite easily?

even though that's a detailed description only you can find the leak. degrease it all and look for it. I wouldn't go to enzed unless you want to pay a fortune. Surely you could just get one that looks good from a wrecker. u pull it in adelaide sell complete power steering setups including rack for around 200 from memory.

power steering leaks are an added bonus in old r31s , ive had four r31s and three of them leaked fliud and the fourth one had a reconditioned rack and hoses put on it just before i got it

expect any stuff you get from the wreckers to be equally tired and in need of replacement/repair

I have had a look, and unfortunately where the leak is roughly coming from is in a place that required me to take out the radiator to attempt to undo a clamp holding the hoses in place. Once I did so I was unable to get the bolts undone anyway so I decided it's too difficult a job for me to do myself. :P

Might just take it to a decent mechanic and get it sorted. Good news is I put the radiator and all that back together and it seems good! :)
