Just helping a mate out here with an engine or head swap on the RB-30ET...Not sure which way he wants to go, and money i dont think will be an issue.. He has burnt a valve out i think and is now wanting to upgrade..

He is undecided to either go a complete RB-25DET engine/g-box swap in the car, or doing the RB-26DETT head on the RB-30 Turbo engine...

If using the RB-25DET we will use the Hi-Flow Turbo of the engine now..

Any advise out there??? Please... :P

Should ask him how much hp would he be comfortable with? and then see.

a good completed rb25 is slots straigh in is gonna be lots cheaper, than a bolt on rb26 head onto a rb30 bottom and then u still got the unknown factor of the old rb30 bottom end holding together with the new re-power.

Yeah i hear you all!!! What sort have power have people seen with the std RB-30 engine with the RB26 head??

Just trying to compare this to the RB-25det swap? Which i am in more favour of... As the

RB-25DET are a stronger engine standard right???

Sorry for all the q's just trying to figure out the best way to go, before i commit to this guy... : )

Never done a standard internals RB30 with an RB26 head, sort of like feeding strawberries to cops. Have done a standard internals RB30 with an RB25DE head, it made 475 bhp on the engine dyno. It's still going strong after 4 years. The average power absolutely kills an RB25 or RB26 with the same maximum power. That's what an RB30DET is all about, higher AVERAGE power for less money. :aroused:

Thanks for that.. I think we will be doing the complete RB-26 engine swap, with RB25 sump and 5speed box.. Can get all this for around the $6,500.oo mark, also with loom, computer A/F meters etc.. This i think would be the way to go.. As we eventually want around the 300kW mark at the wheels.. In a VL this should be a pretty good combo...

With this in mind, you think there is an easier way of doing this, as i have heard the std RB-30 bottom ends aren't strong enough for this power in std form.

Appreciate all your feed back guys...

We have several standard internal RB30's that disprove that, the 475 bhp example for a start. It would make a little over 300 rwkw on the chassis dyno, it has never been on one as it was tuned on the engine dyno. We are certainly not alone, check out RIPS standard internals RB30 in their drag car. :)

I don't see Sydneykid's point. I'm a pig and I quite like strawberries.

Seriously what's a ballpark $ figure to cost effectively build an RB 26 or 25/30 like the one mentioned above and install it into an R32 GTR - if that's feasible? Are there any major compromises or big issues in doing this eg engine height or gearbox compatibility? Does it retain the twin turbo setup?

I know there's a sticky on the site but it's very, very diverse.

Seems like a great conversion and I can't understand why more people don't do it, although it may become apparent in the answer to the above.

It doesn't matter whether you like strawberries on not, the fact is, if you were a pig, they would be wasted on you. :nowigetit

For a rebuilt standard internals RB30 for ~475 bhp you are looking at $1,200 to $1,500. There are plenty of posts (not just from me) giving detailed costings, do a search. RIPS in NZ make and sell a 4wd sump adaptor for retail consumption, they can be found on Skylines Downunder. Gearbox bolts up, as does the clutch. No problem with height using an RB26 head, the RB30 block is not as much taller as the cross over pipe is on an RB20/25. You can have as many turbos as you like.

It is a good conversion, not for everyone though. There are plenty around, we have built 11 X RB31's in the last 18 months. The RB30 thread is a good indication of the interest.

Hope that helps :P

Yes I am familiar with the saying, just my dry sense of humour that prompted the comment I made. Thanks for the info.

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
