I'm a long term member but haven't posted in a while, please be gentle . Can move onto another similar thread if need be...

No idea how to embed videos but I've uploaded the clip to youtube which shows the noise here Oh so it embeds itself these days haha -

Doesn't sound like it's spun a bearing but after a bit of investigating to me it sounds like it's possibly noisy lifter/s. I had the motor fully rebuilt a while back, it has forged CP pistons, Tomei poncams etc...I don't believe it has always made this noise but literally can't remember how long ago it started. It is only obvious on start up after initial warm-up higher revs, once you rev the motor higher it's pretty much drowned out by the noise of the exhaust.

I don't see it as a bottom end problem as the car runs fine, holds boost with no issue, doesn't misfire yada yada. To those on here more mechanically minded, would this most likely be lifter noise? After watching videos of spun big ends I couldn't compare it, but watching other lifter-related clips it sounds damn similar. When the motor was rebuilt I couldn't answer if the lifters were cleaned but to save people asking that, I'll go with no.

If it is lifter noise, what's the best/easiest way to determine it? Not hands on enough for me to remove/clean/replace myself, so parts cost aside any ideas on what sort of labour costs a job like this would be? Doesn't seem overly complicated but just time consuming, which is where workshops make most of their money lol

Thanks in advance :) Nathan

Ever hear the saying "bangs like a buggered tappet" ?

That noise is the reason for that saying.

Ah ok thanks. Would you reckon more likely seized & would need to replace them, rather than cleaning them & putting them back in?

Lifter I would say. The noise is less prominent as the revs increase, where as with a spun bearing its more of a clunk at a certain rev range usually higher, but not always.

if you put a large screw driver with one end on your ear and other on the rocker cover you can usually isolate the noise. You can do the same with the car on stands and listen to the crank, just be careful. Hope this helps.

    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
    • thanks GTSboy. My confusion at the moment is i am trying to locate the ignition, ECU battery power and the ECU negative The closest thing i can find is the for the S15 on Page 8 of the Wiring Specialties web page https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9F33_M_GgENQnZ6STMxVmVNd1E/view?resourcekey=0-eZ4nNRwRoqa1qvKlWWHm8A I cannot find the same diagram for the R33 RB25DET Series 2 dash plug pin out.... Do you know what the Pins? or know where i can find the same pinout diagram for the RB dash plug? Thanks for the advice on the box... i like a 6 speed so might be on the lookout or the box now.. a topic of discussion for another post...
    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
