hey all.

opened up my fuel tank the other day to check the sender all was good, but now on prime my fuel pump is making a sick noise

now bear with me here this is gonna sound strange...

its usually just a priming noise with one note but after fiddling in the tank when priming it sounded different like a two note slower noise,

after driving around for a while i stopped and tried again and it sounded normal again and i was happy

but when i got home i tried it one more time and its makeing the bad noise again.

am i being overly worried or could the pump be on the way out?

Hi Jimbo,

#1 rule with fuel pumps, make sure it isn't touching anything in the tank (like the bottom) otherwise the noise will drive you crazy.

#2 rule, make sure the clamps and brackets are tight, otherwise it will move around until it rests on something and the noise will drive you crazy.

#3 rule, if you suspect the fuel pump, check the fuel pressure. Best done at the fuel rail, on the dyno with a good load on and some boost up.

#4 rule, don't post something up at lunchtime and complain if no one answers before afternoon tea. Some of us have to work you know. :)

thanks for the reply SK it helps me understand more but dosnt quite answer my question about the 1 or 2 note prime, is it understandable, i know it sounds silly.

i have a PFC and the controller is telling me that the injector cycle is working perfectly could that mean that the pump is too?

5 hours is a long time to wait when you're stressed, but i get ya :)

thanks cheif

Hi Jimbo, sorry I have no ideas about "2 notes", my family reckon I'm tone deaf anyway. It is usualy related to how hard it is resting on the bottom or how much fuel is in the tank and covering the pump.

The Commander tells you what the ecu is telling the injectors, not what the injectors are actually doing. Fuel pressure guage or a quick a/f ratio check on the dyno will do that.

"5 hours", I've been stressed for longer than that pumping up a flat tyre by mouth. :jk:

:bahaha: :)

alright 2 tone expaination

when i turn to ignition the pump will prime "beeeeeeeee"

the problem i am having is its now going a bit slower and as well as going just "beeeeeeeee"

its now going both "beeeeeeeee" and "booooooooo" at the same time

:)

MMMMMMMMMM?

Does it make the "beeeeeee" noise when the engine isn't running?

Or when cranking?

Does it make the "booooooo" noise when the engine is running?

:headspin:

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey Jimbo, did you sort this problem out???

I put a gtr pump in my r32 gts-t, it seems to make the same noise as your saying on prime, but when it idles it pretty quiet, but if i just tap the accelerator it makes the loud noise again, it that happenig with you too??

I dunno if that makes sense

gday yogi

problem remains but i can see no evidence that its doing anything wrong, car runs as normal, it does it on and off and i cant see that its actually causeing any problems, everything run perfectly so i've just decided to live with it, until i open it up again to have a look.

turn your stereo up and the noise will go away :):(

nah seriously, if the noise wasn't there before you fiddled with the system, then you have done something to it. it may not affect it at all, so don't worry too much.

if it were me, i would open up the tank again and repeat whatever you did the first time but TAKE EXTRA CARE to put it all back exactly as it looks like it should go. if the noise is STILL there..... use the "stereo interference" method :)

Hey

I finally fixed it!!! Got rid of it and it almost sounds like the stock pump, very faint sound now. It took me 3 goes to get it in the right position, plus i also put a rubber in between the side of the pump and the bracket. Its finally sounding good. (thats a r33 gtr pump)

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
