Hi all

I have the opportunity buy 2x 12'' subs in a box. The subs are Cerwin Vega S12.4 and the guy wants $200. Is this a good deal or not? How much would u expect to pay for these 2nd hand?

Specs are:

Power Handling :250 watts (nominal),500 watts (max)

Frequency Response : 30 Hz - 500 Hz

Sensitivity : 95 db

Mounting Diameter : 11" (27.94 cm)

I seriously dont know anything about audio and did a search but not much info?

Dont want to spend alot on audio right now so what kind of additional things would i need to buy to hook this up to my fairly stock r34 system (stock as in clarion/addzest HU + stock speakers i think lolz? What amps etc?

I was originally goin to goto autobarn or something and buy the 2x12'' pioneer ones preboxed for $559 or something.

I just want something which will give me some/fair bit of bass when i listen to my music but nothing overboard

Thanks All

its a good price... dont know much about those speakers in particular but 250 watts RMS is decent power for a $200 subr set. Worst case scenario, if you blow the subs, you can keep the box and simply replace em.

For an amp i think 2 * 300watt RMS amp will be the most you should be looking for and would accomodate and changes later on. A weaker amp would work well for those subs... ive seen quite a few 150-200 watt 2 channel RMS amplifiers around.

Besides an amp, you'll need a wiring kit if you dont already have one which can set you back anywhere between $50 to $200 depending and brand/quality/power rating...

im currently using an 1200 watt kit which i picked up for $40... works perfectly.

I actually have a 12inch pioneer in my boot... running 600watts off my amp and with my setup i have no dramas...

Say goodbye to the entirety of your bootspace though. I have one boxed 12 in my boot and it takes up just on half the boot space. Then mounting the amp as well leaves even less space.

As for quality recommendations on the brand i'd say www.caraudioaustralia.com would be your best bet.

thanx all

in regards to the amps.. imma bit lost in regards to brands and such..

should i keep a look out for 2nd hand amps or should i just goto strathfield and pick up a 1000W boss amp for $189 (for the time being)?

For $189, it seems pretty cheap even if it stuffs up. lol

if its only for the time being then it will do fine...

i personally dont see anything wrong with buying a good quality second hand amp but buying a cheaper new one may save you some hassels...

boss isnt a highly recommended brand, and i personally prefer good quality amps which i know will last me in the long run. But a 1000watt amp with that price is pretty cheap...

what are its specs?? Number of channels, features...RMS power etc

its a 4 channel 1000w amp

4 x 250 Watts max. output power

4, 3 or 2 channel bridgeable

would this run the subs? or should i get a mono block (i heard) or 2 channel (i have no idea)

like i said, only for time being until i get some funds, just dont want the subs to be lying around

I also have an orion cobalt co430 lying around.. its a 4 channel but i dont know the output

the amp would run the subs well... you would be able to bridge it to 2 channels (2 * 500watts) and that would run em perfectly.

But you must also know, Max output power is one thing, RMS power is another. You should check that the RMS power of the amp when bridged adds up approximately to what the RMS rating of the subs is.

But as far as i can gather, the amp should do well

dont buy the boss amp. its SHIT. if u want one then i'll sell u my 1200 **MAX** power boss amp for that price. its less then 3 months old with an extended 2 year warranty. Dont buy anything from strathfield. expecially bos. all there stuff is SHIT. ive had two boss subs blow up because the boss amp is basikally drawin "dirty" power. Boss amps are bs because at high power they basikalli bypass their amplifying power and are more or less drawing power direct from the battery. All this stuff was quoted directly from alberts because i had them check the system out. and they know their stuff. Also strathfield fulli ***d me around when i tried to claim my warranty. they said they tested the amp out back and it worked fine when i had it tested 20 minutes earlier at alberts who said the amp was ***d. they wouldnt let me out back to prove the amp was fine and scheduled a a time for me to see that the amp was workin. the time was sheduled for TWO weeks later and i would have to pay for that as well. as u can see, i haf it in for strathfield.....

my 2 cents

damn... sounds like you've had some bad experiences. I still stand by my statement that i would rather recommend a better brand amp but i cant imagine the boss blowing a fuse running those two subs. Are they really that bad?

I agree the strathfield are a bunch of wankers... wanted to charge me $120 bucks for the same wiring kit i paid $40 for, from a friend. They'll rip you off 5 times before you even buy something.

I would imagine it would fit in a R34 no probs if it can fit into a 180SX.

    • Let me assume that the concern over a manual ECU is that the NeoDET that you have was an auto and has an auto ECU. That ECU will not be a problem, but you WILL have to Nistune it. And you would have to Nistune it even if you had a manual ECU, because the turbo ECUs will shit the bed if they do not have all the things that they were told they have to have, to be happy. The big one being the TCS CU, which you won't have in your car. Anyway, with an auto ECU (which I have running my originally auto NeoDET in an R32) Nistune allows you to put in a Stagea image which doesn't panic about the absent TCS, and allows you to override a whle bunch of other annoyances that would otherwise see the check engine light on 100% of the time. Also, you can't wind up the power very far on the stock NeoDET ECUs without Nistune, because the boost sensor gets in the way. Nistune allows you to push that problem much further up the dial. Do you even have the boost sensor with the engine? Without it, you are SOL and will need an aftermarket ECU (or to find a sensor somewhere, god knows where). I can't tell you what the wiring loom differences are in a 34. But what Duncan said above needs to be considered. When you say "loom", does that include the transmission loom? Because you will need to swap out the auto tranny loom for the equivalent manual loom, and get rid of the neutral/park start interlock (basically hot wire it).
    • I have had the r3c in for years now, maybe close to 7 years and it has never missed a beat, anyone can drive it. Super easy to drive around town, the hotter it gets does get a little hard but it holds the power easy as
    • Shit thing to find eh? I guess the big issue is that whatever "fix" you do now, it might slow the rust down but won't fix it. I just wanted to add that in no way is fixing sheet metal in 3 dimensions the place to start with welding....that is a pro only job because its too hard to work out where things should be, let alone doing a clean enough job that it can look OK and still be strong too.  I needed to get a new rear quarter panel on the GTR and it took a pro weeks to get the old one off cleanly, new one on in the right place and looking somewhat like it should have with most of the previous connecting panels in place. Gluing a couple of bits of metal together with a welder in the garage is doable, but that is totally different to doing panel  replacement
    • This seems to be a very popular swap since all the turbo skyline prices went through the roof! I'll let someone more familiar chime in, but I understand that yes you probably want to swap the loom in to swap out the auto TCM stuff. You should not assume everything just plugs in either, you need to check at least the ECU wiring diagram for any differences at the plug at the left headlight and probably the ones near the ECU that join the dash loom too
    • hows it fellas, my first post here which seems crazy cos half the forums i read are like the same age as me haha. to make a long story short ive got an r34 sedan (rb25de neo auto) which im swapping to a s0/s1? rb25det, r33 big box and nismo gt pro lsd. i have the motor and gearbox all bolted up outside the car, old motor and trans out. i bought the motor with stock ecu and loom, do i switch over to that? or will it be easier to get a r34 manual ecu and keep the loom if thats even possible.  also engine mounts look different, anything else thats different or incompatible? cheers, hope this all makes sense Paddy
