i talked to a mechanic today that works at ford, and he says the f6 has 14 psi stock, and strengthened internals

but then you would think it would pull more than 270kw at engine with that much boost so i dunno

but yeh now they've got the better gearbox they're a hsv killer

Two problems with your statement:

1.No real mechanics work for Ford, they are all just apprentices and lube operators. They do not know a gearstick from a dipstick.

2. You mate is wrong, the F6 runs 9psi boost, not 14psi.

okies, yeh he is like a first or second year apprentice, i'd say he was just misinformed

what do they do if theres a problem none of the apprentices know how to fix?

so for 14k on top of the xr6t, what does the typhoon offer?

1. bigger wheels?

2. different bodykit?

3. new gearbox?

4. bigger injectors?

5. different intercooler?

6. remapped ecu?

what else?

They deny there is a problem or say its normal.

Ford service SUCKS:kick:

hrmmm they left the gearbox hey! i always thought that was a weak point of the XR6T?

go the typhoon! awesome buy im sure we'll be seeing/hearing more of it from you! :P

whats the towing capacity of a typhoon?

Well no the gearbox is new. The series 1 g/b was a 5 speed hunk of cogs. The new one is a 6 speed Tremag and is standard across the ford performance range for series 2 XR6T, XR8, GT, GT-P, F6. it is actually the same brand found in holden, however it is a slightly better example with some refinments on gear selection.

The Gearbox isn't the weak point as they are rated to safley handle closer to 700nm. The injectors are the problem, boost and power are restricted at higher rpm due to limits in injector duty cycle. Otherwise the 270fwkw would be higher.

I believe the manual's tow capacity is 1200kg, but if the auto comes out(which isn't due till late 05) you can get a 1600kg or heavy duty 2200kg tow pack like the V8.

mmmm, finally an australian new car i want to buy, maybe later when i can afford it.

The thing that annoyed me was,

Holdens boss was saying how the Australian public would get confused and that FPV and HSV should be V8 only brands.

How stupid do they think we are. I think they're just jealous.

i'm not really a fan of fords of holdens, but if i had to pick one, ford would probably be it.

commodore's (let's leave the fully imported astras, vectras, etc. out of this) are not advanced cars, and until the latest commodore came out with the new engines they had been using very old engines from GM.

negative comments from commodore fans about how V8s are the only performance engine are of course going to be biased. ford engines moved away from push rods have had DOHCs for quite a while now (i don't know exactly how long, but obviously longer than holden), and they compete well with the larger and more basic holden engines.

but then again, we're all biased. a lot of people here think that skylines are the best car on the planet  i think skylines were one of the best japanese performance cars when they were in production, and the R32, 33 and 34 models still compete with the best today, but they aren't the best car on the planet.

Personally I don't like the F6 because as someone else said it's still just a big, heavy family car that happens to have a 270kW engine. Sure, it's relatively quick in a straight line but even so, not that quick, considering the sheer number of kilowatts it has due to the sheer bulk of the thing.

I acknowledge Ford's efforts in moving away from the V8 'performance" car mentality, something Holden needs to look at. But I think, and no disrespect intended, that Holden fans are mostly V8 diehards with an ignorance of technology, twin cams and turbochargers.

It's strange how in times like these when petrol is getting more expensive each day that Holden can bring out a new "SS" with naff guard vents promoting its 245kW 5.7 litre motor with a prodgious thirst coupled with a big heavy car and still manage to sell heaps of them. Well it seems like heaps because all I see driving around is VX/Y/Z SS Commodores driven by middle aged women and guys who think they are racecar drivers and own the road. But I suppose in my bogan town nothing impressess the neighbours more than a shiny new VZ SS in the driveway. ;)

The second reason I dislike the F6 is that for the money you pay for it you are still getting an inferior quality car. I won't even go into the list of things wrong with NEW cars bought by family/friends from Holden and Ford. It's disgusting. I'm not saying Japanese cars are without their problems but I haven't experienced the same number of squeaks, rattles and loose trim etc in a 1993 R33 compaed to a 2001 WH Statesmen with a bung GENIII.

To me if you want a performance car and are serious about driving and not just using it as a status symbol to impress your friends, neighbours, whatever you can buy a far superior car for less money in the form of an import. Sure you don't get a warranty and it may be a bit older but it's a much higher quality car that can go fast, handle and look good

Nearly $60,000 for an F6? No thanks, give me an R33 GT-R or even a nice R34 GT-t anyday. I'm sure Ford will manage to sell plenty of them though but I look forward to pulling up next to one at the lights one night and seeing how a ten year old Skyline costing a third of the price goes against one...

Holdens boss was saying how the Australian public would get confused and that FPV and HSV should be V8 only brands..
Confused? About what??

Thats the kind of bullsh!t backward bogan redneck comment you'd expect from the boss of Holdem...

Torque gets heated

By James Stanford

November 5, 2004

THE leaders of the Australian muscle car industry have clashed over the arrival of a Ford turbo blaster.

The head of Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV), David Flint, and boss of Holden Special Vehicles, John Crennan, have spoken out against each other's brands as FPV releases the new F6 Typhoon. The Typhoon is a turbo-charged six-cylinder Falcon, which will be sold alongside the GT Falcon.

Crennan says the arrival of the powerful six-cylinder model will confuse the brand image of FPV, while HSV is a clearly a V8-only brand.

"I consider our branding and our vision and our plan to be very pure. The essence of good marketing is purity, and to a certain extent simplicity, and I look at the Ford side of things and I see something that is more confusing," Crennan says. "Is it Tickford? Is it FTE? Is it FPV? Is it FPR? Is it six-cylinder? Is it eight-cylinder? Is it supercharged?"

FPV has introduced a new slogan, Performance Inc, to incorporate the introduction of a turbo six-cylinder car next to its V8 GT models.

Flint says FPV does not have to stick to building V8 cars. "We are not the GT or V8 car company," Flint says. "We are the pre-eminent performance car company in Australia. That frankly means we are free to do anything we like."

Flint says overall performance is more important than the amount of cylinders.

"The business I am in is to develop performance motoring for whoever wants to be a performance motorists. If it was a four-cylinder, six-cylinder, five-cylinder, I don't frankly care, as long as we have got a performing chassis and drive-train is all that matters," he says.

Flint disagrees with Crennan's comments about the negative impact the six-cylinder Typhoon might have.

"I have a lot of time for John, he is an outstanding manager and a superb marketer. In this instance, though, I think he is not right," Flint says.

"John believes that V8 is the pinnacle of all of it and we disagree."

Flint also attacked the new 6.0-litre HSV GEN IV engine, which has slightly more power and torque than the FPV Boss V8 in the GTs.

"Our V8 is a very hi-tech double overhead camshaft multi-valve engine, to me that is a more technical solution than an old push-rod engine (HSV GEN IV), but that's the way he (John) chooses to go and good luck."

Crennan says consumers have the final say. "All I know is that for every 10 cars we sell, they sell three - and I'll let the numbers do the talking."

Autech,

Valid points. Just to stand up for "performance cars" which are also family sedans..

1. For towing a boat, an SS seems like a good *cheap* choice because it has the torque.

2. A lot of people have company cars and budgets can be restricting. You might want a BMW 5 Series, but if your budget is $60k you can only really go for a Calais or something. My friend's dad was in this boat - it was like a BMW 3.18i or a fully specced V6 supercharged Calais (or the equiv Ford). And also, the Calais handles very well.

3. There are performance sedans out there like the BMW M5, Audi RS6 which are considered to be awesome cars on the street and the track. You *can* have a performance car that is a sedan, it's just not traditional.

I used to own an R33 GTS-T which was an awesome car, but I have more fun in my turbo Audi A4 (Quattro) which is a sedan.

Personally I don't like the F6 because as someone else said it's still just a big, heavy family car that happens to have a 270kW engine. Sure, it's relatively quick in a straight line but even so, not that quick, considering the sheer number of kilowatts it has due to the sheer bulk of the thing.

You do have a point, I wouldnt put up with the heavy body but being australian it makes sense to have the room.

The engine has potential written all over it, I can see this engine being used in all kinds of cars. My next project is an AC Cobra and the turbo six is making it hard to stay with the 8's.

The next step up from an RB30DET?

    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi
    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
