i'm in WA and thinking about 'investing' in a radar detector due to my lack of points.

what i'm looking for are suggestions. seeing as the international brands have a lot of stuff we do/n't need. what should i get. what do you people have? (i realise the laws vary btw)

i don't want to spend more than $1k.

cheers.

i wish i had 1k to spend.

I looked into that as well, and got quotes of around 650 for a Bell, which are sposed to be the best.

The new model is just coming out, for $850 they say on a straight road you get 5-600m warning of a multinova.

i think ill give it a couple of months till 850 comes down a bit.

The bell models are a bit weird, they have a whole pile of crap you dont need, but if you go down to a model without voice etc, you dont get as good a detector in terms of the stuff you do need, so really its all or nothing.

BTW thanks for the article.

i agree.

there are better ways to spend 1k. but i will not be a happy man if i loose my license!

yeah i've been looking at bell. with the front and back detectors etc. even some australian company saying theirs are better? however it was probably the most dodgy online store i've ever seen (no pics/prices/info)

found out one had been discontinued, but it was being sold by a place here in perth? weird

gotta run

hey mate. I got BEL radar dectector and in WA. I bought mine in 2000 and all was well, worked on everything except the new type of LASER gun they have out. I was done for speeding bout 1 month ago, 87 in 70 zone, made the cop flash it on me 3 more times before I would accept fine.. he said, yep mate, this is a NEW gun, your pissy little detector wont save you from me no more. he was pretty nice about it cause I was very rude - he could of slapped on a sticker, but he simply wrote out fine for 80 in 70 zone and that was that.

Moral of the story is to get a new radar dectector that picks up the new type of frequency. The multinova's are getting the new laser also. :D so there goes my $480 down the drain, not sure how much they will set ya back.

For people in states where it's illegal to get a radar detector, keep in mind that the cops can still detect the "stealth mode" ones, without any extra hardware! What they do is leave their equipment off then periodically switch it on as cars are approaching. The ones with the detectors will almost always go for the brakes, and they pull these guys up and search the vehicle until they find the detector. Scummy, but effective!

aw11,

I am in Perth and have a Bell (can't remember the model offhand). It cost me $849 about 2 months ago. I have since only been able to 'find' 3 multinova camera's to test the range of it with dissapointing results. The first two times the operator was standing next to the camera's and my radar only went off about 20 metres or less away, and the last time I saw the camera about 100 metre's away, but a car pulled out of a driveway and blocked the camera until I was right on it and the radar went off...

SO, I don't know if the coverage is crap (like less than 20 metres) which won't save ya, or if the operator was testing the cameras the first 2 times and the car blocked it the last time...

Oh I did pass one on albany hwy but it was on the other side of the road. My radar didn't pick it up until I had gone past it, but went crazy for about 200 meters down the road....

hmmmmmmm...

my 2c.

Brett

i once tailed a M5 down south and he picked up two roadside police traps and one multinova. he saved about three other cars including myself from big fines :D since then i've wanted something decent. but i guess owning an m5 and all he'd be able to buy the best. dag nam it.

anyway, thanks for your info. model number would be handy

going to double up with a portable police scanner aswell ;)

    • For anyone interested, this is my old graph from 2021, but I've plotted the previous setup curve onto it with a black pen. old setup was: pon cams, oem itbs and plenum, HPI manifold, hks 2835 pro S .87ar rear, Turbosmart actuator, 3" turbo back no res. or cat., greddy spec M fmic, nismo 740cc inj, walbro in tank 460, splitfires, 4" intake pipe, Apexi pod, e85, eboost2, power Fc. I love that the new setup has much larger turbo spec with the HTA3076 1.01ar Ts rear, and literally everything is bigger, but far higher quality and result is it's FAR more responsive in paper.
    • This makes a lot of sense! I just had that realisation a few minutes ago and wrote it above haha. This is a good new discovery. "Sanding the side of the hill" perfect way to put it.   馃槀 馃槀
    • This is probably what's happened to me. I'll put filler again on my repairs and use the long block and let you know how I go. Fingers crossed it's my last batch of filler lol. I can see that happening where my block dipped at certain points because it didn't cover all the high spots at the same time if that makes sense. I'm just trying to visualise the fact that with the large sanding block I will be sanding far away from the central dent area and whether that will cause issues or whether that's going to fether out my repairs better.
    • Thanks for all that info. I thought I heard that the size of the block should be the same size as the repair or is that wrong? Though I do have some long blocks which I can use for the dents in the middle of the panel. The issue is with the ones at the edge of the door and near the grooves.
