Hi,

There is about 99 000 kms on my clock at the moment and my car was due for a service at 98 000.

I am going to get the major service done pretty soon, and want to know what is the BEST way to go about it without burning a hole in my pocket.

I have been quoted approx $1000 from 2 workshops for a major service.

Can you guys please let me know exactly what I should have done and what I should expect to pay. The car is running like a dream at the moment and has a 3 inch turbo back exhaust and air filter with heat partition. Spark plugs were changed on my last service.

I am thinking about getting my injectors cleaned too.

Also need to install a boost gauge but have no idea how to do any of this stuff....

Anywhere you guys can recommend?

Sounds like you're on the right track. I can't give you a suggestion of a workshop, but if you are handy with a socket set you could do most/all of the service yourself.

1.Your timing belt will HAVE to be changed, ask around about the horror stories if you don't.

2. You should have your water pump replaced as well.

3. Good synthetic oil/filter

4. Fuel filter code Z200

5. Check you plugs, if in good nick leave them be, if they are looking a bit worse for wear, cough up for decent platinums.

6. Getting you injectors cleaned/tested would be a good idea as they have been known to cause problems sometime (usually due to bad maintenance)

You really should be able to do all this yourself very easily except for the timing belt and water pump. The reason your costs are so high is the labour involved in replacing these parts.

If you can do it yourself, or even ask some guys on the forum for help (offer 'em a steak and a carton).

All up should cost you max $500 including everything - so $500-700 goes on labour.

This is what I would do.

1. Replace Cam Belt ~ $103

2. Replace Waterpump!!! ~ $75

3. Replace Thermostat!!! ~ $24.95

4. Gasket Paper for the Thermostat Housing $4 and the goo stuff $5 maybe.. But it is cheap.

5. Get the Block Powerflushed and the Radiator Rodded. ~$120-$185

DIY obviously.

The reason why i say the last few (cooling system) is I've just blowen a head gasket due to the temperature getting up to 3/4 and having to hit boost up flagstaff hill to get up there. EDIT: No It was a air lock.. No CO2 in the Coolant... :(

Get the cooling system done...

When I had the twin Thermo's fitted I had no overheating problems. To be on the safe side I had my radiator Rodded at the same time.

BUT.. It didn't work, Obviously there was crap in the block as this summer hits and it starts to overheat.

I ran Mukout in the car for the last 2 days and flushed the motor/block my self and it has fixed the overheating problem.

Only ever so slightly though. It doesn't use water YET and there is no water in the oil, it idles smooth but there are tiny bubbles in the radiator.

Cooling system is a priority!!!!

Also Flush your brakes and Mastercyclinder!

Guys a major service dosnt just meen under the bonnet e.g:

diff oil

gearbox oil & filter (if auto)

handbreak adjustment

break fluid flush mechine disks and new pads (if ness)

air filter

air line hoses

radiator and heater hoses

full wheel bearing and bush lube

cv joints re packed

uni joints greesed

door hinges and locks lubed

as well as the jobs mentioned in other posts above

prob more that I cant think of atm

a full diag of the engine management sys (reg proper diag equipment that not many mechnics have! (even tho most say they do),(they plug the car into a computer at the fuse box under the dash and can tell anything about the car and how its running).easy way to get ripped off by mechnics that dont do what they say or dont have the equipment to do the job properly)

a major service should include a go over the whole car!

At this stage, I will be having the car done by Rev Rite Performance in Silverwater. They are honest guys, and do a lot of Jap Imports - just waiting on an approximate price, and a holder for my Autometer boost gauge, and then she will be done.

The fitted my turbo back exhaust and did a service for me about 2 months ago. I highly recommend them.

Will post the results in the new year.

So Rev Rite are pretty good huh?

I have 130,000 or so on my R33 and as far as I can tell (have had it for 10,000 or so) I don't think it's had the belts and stuff changed.

Wanted to get a servicer who knows their Skylines and can do a decent service as well a tune on the whole shell.

So if this guys know their stuff, are trustworthy and well priced hand over their details.

The service is done now!

It was done by RevRite Performance in silverwater for $760.00

Got it back today, they got broken into last night, but only went for the GTR that was being rebuilt and walked straight past mine - they knew what they were after.

The timing on my car was off, and has now been fixed. Much more responsive now. A bit of an animal......

On the way home, I pulled up next to a VT Series 1 SS on Silverwater Rd (late xmas present). Burnt him badly - at the next set of lights, he asked me to wind down my window, and said Thanks mate that sounded awesome. He was actually pretty good about it all. He was about 35-40. Tried to blame his auto box.

Told him I just had a major service done - and he just said have fun!

I strongly reccommend REVRITE PERFORMANCE in Silverwater.

heheh I burnt a Maloo Manual 255LS1 red ute with custom number plates this morning.

Same thing 40year old bloke & he started it.

I really expected it to be quicker. Had 2 runs with him one from 50kays (big mistake right in my peak torque & wheel spun through second as I was on a real slight bend when I planted it) and another from a set of lights. I launched with wheel spin in first (crappy Baraum tyres) 1/2 a car length behind by the end of second I catched him nose to nose chirped third and pulled passed him quite easily.

Basically it felt like I could have backed off then played with him a little.

Yer those VT SS Auto's are a little sluggish (stock).

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
