second hand tyres

i need new front tyres and a friend suggested that i get second hand ones ... what are your opinions on this?? will it affect the ride much if i get tyres with a slightly different amount off tread on them ... say 10-20% difference?? does it affect the handling much... i went to check out some second hand ones ... i'm not too keen on getting them ... but i would save a bit over 50 percent on the price of new ones ... what do u think??

hippy - dont quote me, but i think its illegal to have diff tyres on diff sides of the car, however, you can have one type on front, one type on back....

the same rule i think applies to tread, eg cant have one brand new on left, and one bald on right.. but can have new at back, old at front..

i rekon second hand tyres are good, aslong as you check them out first

i always get second hand tyres, but you must get them in PAIRS.

for my car in 225/50/16 good second hands (i.e. michelin pilot sports with 80-90% tread) are about 70 bucks each, that way i dont feel guilty about burning rubber

shop around a few places and find some good second handers, a good brand like pirelli, michelin, bridgestone or something with 80 or 90% tread left. with a bit of hunting you'll find yourself a good bargain

Why would people sell perfectly good 225/50/16 tyres?

And where might I buy good 2nd hand 255/45/17 rears? I seem to be rooting thru these pretty quickly.

i dunno, but i dont have much trouble finding good ones at all.

my current ones are michelin pilot sports, which are worth waaaaaaaaay more than the 70 a pop they are charging for near new second handers.

try taleb tyres in tempe, agr tyres in sefton (where i got mine), top ten tyres in carramar, or theres some place in granville i think called seven day tyres, they always advertise in the trading post

pretty much what i wanted to say, summary second hand in my opinion are the way to go.

and to answer someones question in regards to why would someone sell perfectly good tyres, well the answer is sometimes they import them (like a place i know), sometimes they get them from accident cars, etc. anyway there are shops dedicated to only second hand tyres so they have their sources (not our problem unless they are stolen or something dodgy is going on)
