Well, I am over 25 thankfully...but still Shannon's quote is higher than Just Car. Which one is recommended though in term of trustworthyness?

Btw, just finished talking to both Just Car and Shannons. They seem to be unaware that the VIper/Clifford is not of Australian Standard. LOL

And the code for Australian Standard is:

AS/NZ4601

I guess at the end of the day the question is, will they make it a big deal if so happens that you car has Viper and got stolen?

shannons told us we need to fax through a receipt for the alarm

*paying about 2.3k for a 23yr old rating 1 for a 32 (practically no diff in $ with gtr/gtst).

i think they both said they wont insure a remote start alarm either (but not 100% sure on that). I think they wanted a 3point immobiliser from memory.

Main difference between shannons and just cars (imo) is shannons = lifetime guarantee on repairs, choice of repairer .. just cars = 3yr guarantee, must match or beat quote from one of their approved repairers if you want to fix elsewhere (bit of a F around).

I think Shannons is better.. even their home insurance covers specialist tools in a garage.. but their quotes are double Just Cars (but we are both under 25).

blackskyline: what about if you swap the viper wiring harness to a black one? Surely that would make the alarm acceptable? (was thinking about upgrading to viper.. maybe not!)

Was thinking of changing the cables to black. But that doesn't make the viper an australian standard.

I've talked to few of my friend who owns a audio security shop and they mentioned that the australian standard alarm like flashpoint, mongoose, etc are not even half as good as the Viper or Clifford in terms of module and functionality. They are only better in terms of the black cabling. That means, you car *MIGHT* be safe from stolen but not necessarily safe from breakins. I find that is is plain silly that the insurance company accepts crappy alarms but rejects the top of the range ones.

It is sad, I'm gonna have to switch to a crappy alarm product (or even just put in a plain OZ standard immobilizer). Or alternatively, change my comprehensive to third party and put a top of the range alarm.

Its not as simple as changing the wire :)

wont change the model number of the alarm!

My good mate does alarms. He can get something to work for you if you want? PM for details. He comes reccommended by many :)

They can be safe if you do them right. I mean 3 (or 2) points of immobilisation is just that. It doenst matter if you spend $300 or $700

You just get funky stuff like shock sensors which wont save your insurance bill. Or make the car any less stealable :)

BAH! There ought to be a sticker checklist (or something) on ALL car parts that stores have to complete before sale.. ie

Is this Aus standard? y/n

Is this an illegal mod in the state of .....? y/n

(Is this overpriced/gheye and nothing but wank factor? y/n)

And so forth...

Might make it a little bit clearer and make more people impulse buy.. rather than "may not be legal for street driven cars" or whatever (ie check at your own leisure).

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
