Hey there guys, ive just bought a NEO RB25DET motor out of a 1999 GT-T and an R33 25t gearbox to fit into my S14 (previously fitted with an RB20).

The motor is missing the ECU, alternator, wiring harness has been cut etc. Ive got a few questions regarding r33-r34 part interchange-ability. Will other RB alternators fit the NEO RB25? What about the wiring harness? And im guessing the ecu will have to be a NEO ecu, and an R33 ecu wont work? Will a DE wiring loom be fine on the DET, or do I need to hunt down a turbo loom?

Any help will be appreciated, as im not very familiar with the NEO motors. Thanx guys

You will need the 34 DET Neo wiring loom, and ECU.

The electronic side of the R34 motor seems to be fairly different from an R33, so no you can't use the R33 gear.

I'm not sure on the alternators, though I'd imagine that you'd be able to use one from an RB20/25/26/30 without much trouble, I'm not 100% though.

Thanks alot guys, I can always depend on getting quick useful replies in these forums . So, the verdict is that a neo computer and wiring loom is needed and other RB alternators *should* fit.

Another question, I have an Exedy 5 puk heavy duty clutch that i kept from my rb20det. Mint condition, was only in there for 1 month. Will an RB20 designed clutch bolt on to the RB25 gearbox? I really hope so! Also, will an R33 AFM work with a NEO computer?

there are 2 different gearboxes from the RB25 .. push and pull types..

so you will have to work out what type your clutch is, then what type your g/b is!

What will plug in direct from R33DET gear:

CAS - but you will need to re-wire the plug by reversing the wiring

Injectors - plug straight in

Coilpacks - if you have a series 1.5 then it'll plug right in

Detonation sensors - plug straight in

Coolant temp sensor - plug straight in

Oil temp sensor - plug straight in

Stuff that will work from R33DET:

Throttle body

AFM

ECU

The R33 alternator will fit. The R33 air con and power steering units will not fit with the R34 harmonic balancer. Change it to the R33DET item and they will.

There's probably a few things I've forgotten - but it will work.

If you're talking about an R33 turbo series 1.5 or 2 AFM then I think so. I've checked them against each other and they're the same plug.

the R34s use the opposite to R33s in the clutch department so you may need to do some mods to make it fit.

ie if the R33 is push type the R34 is pull type....

Its been awhile since I changed clutch but I THINK its pull type for the R34....

i also beleive that the S1 and S2 use 2 different types of G/Box as well..

so the S2 might be the same as the R34.

Nope - I'm saying a R33 RB25DET harness will plug into the NEO injector loom. Definitely right cause I'm driving around on it.. :)

Hmm, im kind of getting confused here guys. So the R33 loom fits a NEO motor? And caminperth, you also said a the R33 25t AFM and ECU both fit ? Others have said it doesnt, has anyone tried this themselves and can confirm for sure? If caminperth is right then my life will be much easier, NEO stuff is very rare compared to R33 25t parts (and much more expensive!).

Injectors - plug straight in

Are you sure?

While I've never played with the injectors on my car I've heard from just about everywhere that R33 injectors are side feed whereas R34 injectors are top feed.

R34 injectors are top feed? Interesting. Anyone know what they flow?

I think they flow something likw 320 or 340cc

I'm quite sure the 33 injectors flow more however, something like 370cc (shoot me down if I'm wrong)

but yeh, they are different

And likewise I have a Neo in my 31, PM me if you want to know anything

    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
    • AHHHH gotchaa, I'll do that once I am home again. I tried doing the harness with the multimeter but it seems the car needed a jump, there was no power when it was in the "ON" position. Not sure if I should use car battery jump starter or if its because the stuff that has been disconnect the car just does send power.
    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
