  1. Ferrari stooged themselves. Race strategy 101 - If you're covering a car behind you who's already pitted, cover off the same tyre strategy FFS! That way you're not exposed if there's a safety car... That cost them the race. Also could have covered Nico with Kimi at the same time, back the pace off a touch on the out lap to help Seb maintain the lead when he pits. That way they remain 1-2. I couldn't believe they let Nico undercut like that. Best thing about the race - Ferrari look like they've got a great launching car. Hope that pattern continues for a while - makes it less important if Merc are untouchable in qualy if Ferrari can jump them at the start
  2. The hottest conditions I used them in was at Morgan Park at about 34degrees ambient. They showed no signs of overheating on the day - grip never dropped off like it would if they got too hot, and they still went well at a hillclimb and Phillip Island after that, so I don't think "they overheated and were cactus from then on". There is no chance the hillclimb overheated them. It was nice and cool at Phillip Island and they were great down there too. Not only did grip not drop off in any session as it would if they got too hot, but I did my best lap on the last lap of the day. Next time I used them they were instantly horrible and got worse with each lap. They just lived their life-span of heat cycles if you ask me. lol at someone running pogo stick and horrible multi-link rear suspension calling the Soarer's double wishbones unsophisticated!
  3. Richard: "For sprints I'd be tempted to try the softs" Harry: softs don't last long Richard: "softs were asking a bit much don't you think Harry... I was thinking mediums..." Harry: uh, glad I could help?
  4. Go back to page 18 and read my post about them. Cliffs: Great when new, but the soft compound only last a handful of track days. Admittedly, I am hard on tyres, and the car is no featherweight...
  5. Any CAMS event with classes that have to use semis, are restricted to tyres on the list - even club events. It's just a question of whether the scrutes and competitors know/care, or if anyone else questions it. NT01s are not legal for those classes, but they're not exactly a performance advantage, so chances are nobody would care if they even knew... lol The cowboys at Morgan Park turn a blind eye to people even using 2 groove cheater slicks in their modified production classes, but that doesn't mean the rules aren't there - it's just that they have mistakenly let it go on for so long that there's now too many people cheating the tyre rules to do anything about it!
  6. booo KMag is slow and boring. Pastor is fast and a little erratic. I know who I'd rather watch!
  7. Neither of which has anything to do with NT01 being road legal or CAMS approved. R888 are both road legal and CAMS approved. R888R are not on the list yet, but that's just a formality. NT01 will never be on the list as it does not comply with CAMS void ratio requirements.
  8. The current hotness in hill climb semis slicks is A050 Soft. But they're serious money as well. Be careful with Nittos - they're not road legal and are not on the CAMS prod car tyre list.
  9. update on these. The rears are now toast after just a handful of track days: 1 at Lakeside - did 3 x 5lap sessions. Skipped the last one. 1 at Mt Cotton hill climb. I only did the Saturday afternoon part of the event. 3 runs of a sub 50 sec track. No burnouts. Did not cmpete on Sunday due to a wheel bearing and engine fan hub both being stuffed. 2 day event at Morgan Park in very hot conditions, but only 6 x 3lap sessions for the weekend. 1 at Philip Island. It was a 2 day event, but the first day I only did 2 sessions, and one of those was wet. I left before the last session on day 2 because I was out of fuel and brake pads, so I'm only counting it as 1 day's worth. The next day at Lakeside they were loose as all hell from the start - fronts were still working OK, but the rears had no grip. Best lap of the day was the first lap and they just got looser and slower as the day went on. I always wear rears out first. There's still some tread there, but the tyres have given up the ghost after barely 5 days worth of use! So maybe the C70 compound is not the best for heavy cars if you want any sort of life out of your semis. I'm glad I got them on special! $1056 for the set including delivery but even so, that's not exactly great value... I'm not buying any more semis for a while. I might fit my old nittos back up, or maybe nittos on the front and the front pair of hankooks on the rear until I fry them as well lol got to get your money's worth!
  10. JA "certainly from Hungary onwards, Red Bull was as good as anything else out there, obviously pretty much on a par with the Mercedes..." hmmm... Yeah Hungary, where both Red Bulls broke through with podiums! Sounds good, but it was only because both Mercedes cars and both Williams, as well as one of the Ferraris did themselves in... So RBR finished 2 and 3 by default, with a Torro Rosso hot on their heels in 4th... Then onwards from there, comparing the guys with the same engines so you get an actual idea about their chassis, both Torro Rossos beat both Red Bulls at Japan, a track renowned for needing great high speed handling. And again, both Torro Rossos beat both Red Bulls in USA, also a renowned handling track. As is Brazil, where the Torro Rossos were right in amongst the Red Bulls too. No way on earth are Red Bull on par with Mercedes! They cannot consistently beat their junior, lower budget team with the same engine. Put a Merc PU in it, and Red Bull would get blown away except for three tracks all year. Torro Rosso with a Merc PU would be a better contender for the season than Red Bull. They'll be interesting next season with the 2015 Ferrari donk. Williams will need to be on the ball! And Red Bull will need a Christmas miracle with their PU to be anywhere near STR!
  11. screamer pipes = wasted energy not being recovered. They'll hardly ever open - only when the energy store is full.
  12. there's a strong correlation at least 2015 F1 thread less than half as long as 2014 2015 F1 Free to Air coverage, less than half as much as 2014 I can tell you it made me lose a lot of interest in the sport... No point watching a shortened replay the next day. And if you can't watch the whole season, well why bother really... out of sight, out of mind
  13. coincides 100% with the pay TV thing and limited free to air coverage, not the apparently boring turbo cars or Mercedes dominance.
  14. ah... whether it's ICE or ERS, the Renault certainly sucks. Considering they (Renault and RBR) got Illien involved end of 2014, it's likely to be the ICE they were most worried about. At that stage anyway.
  15. Renault and RBR have comfirmed it. That's why I posted it. TAG branded Illien Renault PU for RBR. Of course, it will only be a TAG if it's any good and a Renault when it blows up or gets beaten by the No2 team with the 2015 Ferrari donk... STR will be up there with Williams I reckon.
  16. RBR confirmed TAG branded Renault engines. STR are the big winners, getting 2015 Ferrari engines RBR were flat out beating STR with the same donk this year. STR will effectively be the lead team next year! lol
  17. Let's hope it all goes to his head again and he gets himself all caught up in the lifestyle and distractions like he was before. I'll never forgive Lauda for sorting him out and basically banning all that nonsense from race weekends... But if it's just that their latest development suits Nico better as that suggests, I hope they keep up the good work!
  18. must be some good snake oil if it only makes them last longer and perform better if you use them a certain way afterwards... imo it will make them last exactly 1 track day longer. The one where you scrubbed them in and basically did nothing with them. As for how a heat cycle can make them faster, I have NFI. All a heat cycle can do is make them harder and slower. Every tyre is at its fastest when they are brand new.
  19. R888s last forever anyway. If scrubbing made them last longer, you can bet F1 guys would be scrubbing in every set they planned on using in the races. But they prefer to save new rubber for the races wherever possible, because its faster and lasts longer. Those guys should know.
  20. point was, if there were a performance advantage by scrubbing them in, they'd be doing it. There isn't.
  21. That's why I said no-one bothers with it. Just use them and don't worry about it like every race series in the world does with new tyres. No-one roads or scrubs tyres - except for wets, and that's for an entirely different reason. I accidentally did it with my Nittos, only because a problem stopped me running after 3 laps. Let me tell you, it didn't make them any better!
  22. yeah, but if you don't know what they're like brand new, you can't really say they're consistent down to the belts. Mine ran effortless 59s brand new. Now at about 50%, 1:01.2 was all I could do. Might be why that bloke was selling his... They're still faster than Nittos, but nothing like what they were new.
  23. ideally, you want to do one smooth session on the track - no sliding, no understeering, but get them nice and hot. Then you take them off and leave them at least overnight. No-one does that though - just use them and don't worry about breaking them in. If you're fussy, be nice and smooth on them for the first track day.
  24. Hankook Z221 softs (C70) are like Yokohama A050 Mediums. Maybe a fraction softer, but not alot. I've done a hillclimb, 2 Lakeside days (1 over 30 degrees ambient), 2 days at Morgan Park in 33 degree heat and 1 day at Phillip Island on a 1530kg Soarer. Tyres are about half worn except for the outer edges. I was planning on flipping them on the wheels to maximise their life, but I think the rear tyres may have gone off now - I had no rear grip at the last track day and it got worse with each lap... I should have changed them front to back to see if the problem moved with the tyres, but CBF. It was too hot A couple of mates who run Hankooks have had the same thing happen - they go off before they wear out.
