I just have to know....it's eating me up. What intrigues me most is it appears some skylines have "mystery-boxes" and some don't - factory option? Or have some original/previous owners removed their mystery-boxes for some reason?? Someone's gotta know...it's probably something incredibly mundane

Hey I just saw a thread in another forum where a R33 GTS4 owner is trying to work out what this same box is...and his GTS4 doesn't have HICAS, tho it does have ALSD. He only has this box, no larger (HICAS) box above it.

I did the diagnostic and got codes 22 & 23, then as I went back into garage it started flashing quickly (the "good" sign), so I did the diagnostic again and got code 22. BTW I had no probs with the HICAS light before this just did the test out of curiosity. Are: 22 Steering angle sensor not present 23 Steering angle sensor neutral or not present big problems for the operation of HICAS?

EDIT: Just put the car into HICAS diagnostic mode and the HICAS works fine...rear wheels were doing their little turns etc Hmm I dunno what HICAS feels like or if it's engaging...I do get a HICAS light when I start the car tho, would I still get that if the HICAS was disengaged?

ah ok well thanks Maybe a dumb question...but why do ppl want to get rid of HICAS? isn't 4ws a good thing?

It also has a front and rear strut brace that appear factory (rear says "Skyline" on it, can see part of it in second pic) I read in another forum that this might have been standard to some specific models

Well what made me wonder is in another post someone suggested that in the model code for R33 if the 18th letter (factory options) is 'C' (which mine is) that means it has ALSD and ABS. I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere else though or anywhere to decode it...it definitely has ABS anyway.

Hmm no there's no lights in the tacho itself But it's an auto so the tacho is prolly different? There's two groupings of 5 lights each on either side of the dials, plus various other lights scattered around but most of the lights have never come on and when they're not on they're completely black I can't see what they are.

Not that I could see, I couldn't get my head under there to see it very well....I may try and take it off later and see.

Ok, I lied about the prize but you'll have my admiration for your knowledge... I'm wondering what the little beige coloured box slung underneath the big gray box is. It's on the right side of the boot. The big gray one would be the HICAS controller I think? So the little beige one would be...(fill in blank:)) Hoping it's A-LSD...I've never seen a "slip" light go on but I don't nail the car that hard around turns and only had it for two weeks. There are 15 lights in the dash and never seen any of them come on except the ones at startup etc. (so handbrake, HICAS, ABS, oil, overdrive, airbag, engine - don't think I've seen any others)

I was only joking in that last bit btw, didn't mean to cause offense - I'm sure people like utes for all sorts of reasons. If I was saying it face to face you would know I was kidding...just sometimes typing doesn't get everything across

I was actually just kidding about "wanting" a skyline or Sil ute...I've never understood utes honestly, I mean if you need one to carry stuff in ok...but station wagons would do the same job anyway...and half the utes these days the owners would have a coronary if you put a toolbox in the back and scratched the paint. Can someone who gets excited about utes explain it to me? Isn't it just a crutch to reinforce the outward image of heterosexuality for those who are confused deep-down inside?

Hmm basically, all GTSt's and GTS25t's are Type-M, all GTS, GTS25 etc are Type-S. Type-M denotes that the car is a turbo, Type-S that it is a non-turbo. Other extras may come with the Type-M (not sure) but I know for a fact that non-turbos are Type-S and turbos are Type-M. Possibly the 'M' stands for 'Massive insurance' and the 'S' stands for 'Secondrate', not sure

Cool britto I think that ALSD was an expensive (and therefore uncommon) option on type-M's, lucky you Are you absolutely sure it's got dual airbags?? Like above the glovebox it has a rectangular outline and says SRS Airbag?? Cos I've never heard of any R33 other than a full-blown SII that had 2 airbags. As for the driving lights, I'm pretty sure Series 1s have them, just not the same type as Series II, SII driving lights are round.

Yeah I heard the same thing Skylvia...I think the version everyone has is what the game would have been if they'd released it but I saw a gamespot preview of a pre-release demo like not long ago and that demo was more advanced than the "full version" I have. I thought the game sucked ass, but hopefully it has improved. Unfortunately its main problem was the driving physics, and if that hasn't improved dramatically I think it's doomed..

PS. I don't mean to sound defensive about it being SII but I did a bunch of research on S1, S1.5 & S2 differences before I bought it to make sure I didn't get ripped
