The car is unmodified and I have serviced it every 5000km with 10W-40 oil. Also fresh brake & power steering fluids and NGK iridium spark plugs. Always run on 98 octane fuel. Gets good economy, about 9L/100km in the city with the aircon on. Has had front end done - both CV joints and control arm bushes done, now Superpro urethane items, at about 145,000km. That container in the boot looks like the the ATTESA E-TS fluid reservoir. It takes ATF, not sure what spec fluid for R34. Well there is a theory that if they all rode around in BMWs and Lexuses then they'd be doing us a favour as the gov't would get back more money at auction than on Fords/Holdens that depreciate more. Could've been off duty? I've seen that a few times (usually a uniformed dude in something older that is in no way an official police car) - unless they had all the screens/lights and stuff in it I suppose?!?

Silver Chrysler 300C pulling somone over halfway up the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane today. And have seen an FG XR6 Turbo ute, navy blue with "Special Edition" stickers on it, lol. Oh and a metallic green Aurion with roof racks (lots of Aurions, actually), and a couple of different mark V Golfs. The only way to pick 'em is the large uniformed gent in the driver's seat, though the XR6 ute had pretty obvious LED clusters in the rear cabin window... Oh and I've seen them using some new-looking tripod-mounted laser device lately - not vehicle-mounted or anything, just setup on the footpath/shoulder. Anyone know anything about that?

Yep, I sure do remember. How's it going? I miss my R34......... Not much time to play around with cars at the moment but will be getting back into it as soon as time and budget allows! Yeah I take what the media says with a large helping of salt but it's the only independent testing we have access to, other than anecdotal evidence from members - which in some cases is very accurate but also very difficult to make sense of in a 40+ page forum thread, with probably just as much of a risk of bias. *no offence!* I agree! When I ran RE55S (admittedly a couple of years ago now) they were a LOT cheaper than that, for a much wider size, and ran them at more like 25-27 PSI cold (depending on corner) to get the best out of them (i.e. 30-32 PSI hot). And typical of the Australian car media, no info about compounds given in the article that I could see. Wouldn't want to come across as actually technically accurate and informative now, would they? That would leave less space to dribble on about the latest 500kW Commodore....

That's cool! Yeah the scores are relative, they are not absolute in any way, and also have nothing to do with the price of the tyre. Sorry should've mentioned that. That's why the slick doesn't have a score. Cheers!

Hi everyone, the current issue of MOTOR magazine has done another tyre test, this time also with some semi-slicks! Woohoo! This might help to settle a few arguments here or at least help people who are shopping for tyres. Test car was the a Renaultsport Clio 197, size tested was 215/45 R17. Driver was Warren Luff. Past discussion in tyre tests is that generally results can be extrapolated from smaller to large cars, FF to FR, etc. The magazine do acknowledge that fiddling with pressures etc might alter the results. Road tyres were tested at 35 PSI, semis at 30 PSI, and the slick at 25 PSI (I'm assuming these were cold pressures). Single warm-up lap for road tyres, two for the semis, and 2 or 3 timed flying laps for the lap time. Lap times are from Oran Park North Circuit (900m). If you throw a "bang for your bucks" type calculation in, the Maxxis wins the the Road category (Federal 2nd), and the Dunlop still wins the Semi category (the Federal jumps to 2nd). Obviously take their prices with a grain of salt... Results: ROAD TYRES 1st. Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone has ever hired wedding cars in Brisbane before and if they could recommend anyone? I'm not after anything fancy, just the usual Lexus/Ford LTD/300C style cars - need 3 of 'em. Hoping to use a more scientific approach to it than just looking in Yellow Pages and hoping for the best. My opinion: The ratings on here are subjective. What someone might rate as awesome grip, someone else (who has experienced semi-slicks etc) might think as merely average. Someone who's only ever had cheap/nasty tyres might rate the first decent set they buy as 10/10. As far as a brand recommendation, there is not really a "best brand". Arguably every major brand makes a very good tyre but also makes a cheap/dodgy one too. From what I can tell from supposedly "independent" magazine tyre tests, there is only a few percent between the performance of most of the major brands' premium sports tyres - I'm talking here about Bridgestone, Goodyear, Dunlop, Yokohama, Pirelli, Michelin, Falken, Toyo, Hankook etc. so provided you stick within those major brands (and buy their "premium" tyres) and not dodgier stuff like LingLong then there's a good chance you won't get duds. No offence, but I generally don't trust tyre shop dudes that much unless I know them. They will often try to sell you whatever they have the most of sitting out the back, or the ones they will make the most profit out of if you're showing you want to spend big money. I often have an experience where they try to push a certain brand. They are a business trying to make money too! There are better value-for-money tyres around, for example the K104's are ok and grip well but are cheap, but may wear out quicker especially if you don't check your pressures. I've had an experience of buying expensive Bridgestones (S03's) that gripped well but also lasted ages, probably twice as long as the Falkens (FK452) I replaced them with. The top-end Michelins are awesome but you will pay over $500/tyre in some sizes, and they might only be a few percent better than a Hankook or Toyo... So my advice is to set the absolute highest budget for tyres you can, do some reading through this thread and the magazine tests, and try to narrow down to a few options, then get heaps of prices, talk to some tyre shop dudes like you actually know something, and go with the best deal.

255's or 265's would probably be a better fit. 235's might go on there but it'd be a stretch. I had 255/35 on 18"x9". Double check your aspect ratios so your overall diameter remains legal. Price... depends which tyre! In general you get what you pay for, with a law of diminishing returns (a $300 tyre will be heaps better than a $150 tyre, but a $500 tyre might not be THAT much better than a $300 one). Tyres are what connects your car to the road, my advice is budget as much as you possibly can on tyres (and brakes), set a budget, then shop around a few places for brands in your size. 255's get expensive.... Most brands have Australian websites where you can search to see if they have your size. Most tyre shops will let you know what's available too but in my experience many will try to push a particular brand or sell you what they have lying around at the time. Then maybe do a bit of reading back thru this thread or try "search".
