  1. Hi, from my experience, an oil catch can is legal if it drains into the sump and the breather is plumbed back into the intake. Similarly, an aftermarket BOV is legal, if it is plumbed back into the intake - assuming that it meets noise level requirements, which all but a few would with this arrangement. Regarding the intercooler, there is nothing illegal in WA about fitting an intercooler, as long as you have not altered the car's structure to fit it in (i.e. cutting into your structural cross member or carving up your front bar so that it flaps in the breeze). Also, there is nothing illegal about shiny pipework. It will draw attention to other mods, though, and may attract a demand for an engineer's certificate and even an emissions test (although the latter is not so much a problem, as the demanding test is temporarily on hold - see other threads). So, not much to add to what others have said. Hope it all helps. Cheers.
  2. I am also known, in some circles, as the Masked Avenger .... .... ..... Oops - there I go de-railing again - sorry!
  3. I don't want to sidetrack this thread any more. I am merely repeating what I have been told. It might be absolute cr#p, but I respect the people who told me. I think the thread you chose shows the range in quality of information on much of this forum. Some people know their stuff. Others don't. I cannot give a sound reference for my comment, so those reading should not put much store by it. Cheers.
  4. On an R34, I was reliably informed, it is fine. But probably as high as you would want to go. R34 turbos are steel bearing but still ceramic wheels - but the ceramics were a lot better than the earlier models, where you would not want to go that high.
  5. Correction - it was 1.3 bar. My apologies. It was tuned by Steve Thomas using the dyno at Top Racing (in Shootout mode, see attached). This was a good example of what you can get out of a GTR with only a few mods. Dyno_Graphs_1.pdf (Sorry again - attached wrong graph first time!) Cheers.
  6. My car, in its first incarnation, had pod filters (arguable that these are needed), Apexi turbo-back exhaust, factory cat (why would you de-cat when the factory cat is high flow and legal???), Power FC and a Greddy electronic boost gauge. Everything else was stock. This gave 280 kW at the wheels, with 1.2 bar boost (which is OK on an R34 - normally ran 0.8 bar). It could have been more with a straight-through muffler, but I had a quiet muffler on it. I added a Tomei fuel pump for peace of mind, as the stock one was nearing its limit. (Hard wire the fuel pump, too.) You can get over 300 kW (400+ hp) with a few more tweaks. The stock FMIC and injectors are fine for such power levels. You will be getting close to the limit for the injectors, but you only need the expense of new ones if you are taking the next step with everything else. Same for the standard air flow meters (which you can take higher, with a tuner who knows his stuff). But you need to start addressing oil issues, if you ever intend to take it to the track. At the very least you need to have an oil catch can/separator, plumbed back into the sump. (I also had the breather line plumbed back into the intake, which kept it legal.) Consider the Mines cam cover baffles. If you can do it without taking the engine out, get a head drain fitted. If you do take the engine out, as well as fitting anything other than an N1 oil pump (even the stock one is stronger), fit an extended sump and baffle kit (Imports 101 do a good kit ). Then, an oil cooler and radiator upgrade will help in the WA Summer. Then … … … … then … … … … I did say "first incarnation", didn't I?!! Cheers.
  7. As already observed by others, you need to take the engine out on a GTR to replace the oil pump. Nice little expensive job, that one. In general, if the seller has the receipts for the work done and it is done by a reputable garage, then I would be happy to accept that - rather than spend several thousand dollars re-doing it all! Jonn, by all means recommend a workshop with whom you have enjoyed good outcomes, but don't have a general swipe at all others. All workshops have their pros and cons. The more popular they are, the more diverse the opinions. I can assure you that Xspeed enjoy both, same as anywhere else. Cheers.
  8. Hi, Jason. I would caution anyone buying any specialist interest car to be careful and take everything presented with a pinch of salt. The guy may well be genuine and as honest as the day is long. Unfortunately, many of the people selling interesting cars are nothing short of crooks who prey on the goodwill of others. It also seems that selling a car can bring out the worst in people who are just selling their own vehicle. So do all you can to investigate the provenance of the car. Ask to see the service records and go through them. Ask to see the auction sheet and check the chassis number against the sheet. Ask to see records that prove the mileage when he fitted the Nismo speedo. Don't let him rush you with tales of people flying in. He is trying to get you to offer more than the fly-buyer. If the fly-buyer does not materialise, suddenly you are in the driving position and can dictate your own offer. Personally I would not trust someone who tries to play me off against someone who is flying in with cash! Also, anyone selling an "unmodified example" who is also selling an HKS exhaust and a Power FC does not ring true! Just call me cynical! Also, unless your mate is experienced in GTRs, and R34s in particular, then I would take the car to a workshop where they have that experience. Imports 101 is the one I would recommend. These cars have very specialist equipment that many mechanics will not have seen and will not know what to look for. Cheers.
  9. I reckoned that the Batman sticker suits it! It's had a good service, new tyres and a few other bits and pieces fixed, but overall its a sound car. Even the BOV works now! Great fun and my sons enjoyed it too. Cheers.
  10. Hi, all. Sorry it has taken me a while to get organised, but here is the link to the photos that I took. Sorry if your car is not amongst them, I didn't take everyone. But there are some good shots! Photobucket album for trackday 28 March 2010 And here is one as a taster! If anyone would like their high resolution originals, uncropped, please send me a pm with your email address. Cheers.
  11. Brad, As discussed, please put me down for my two sons as well. If we are careful, the car will get a bit of a rest between runs! I will send through payment for two non-members. Cheers.
  12. And, if you will forgive me, that is the problem with these laws. They present a populist "solution" to a problem that, in the main, is a social nuisance, but also has elements that endanger innocent bystanders. The problem is the way they are enacted. They give too much discretionary power to the policeman on the spot. You are guilty until you are proven innocent and, in most instances, it is almost impossible to prove your innocence because it is your word against a policeman - and naturally the policeman is going to demonstrate he was correct. So I agree that the idiots who drive dangerously should be taken off the road. But that should happen in a way that is just, has appropriate judicial oversight and safeguards and provides punishment that is in proportion to the crime. Cheers.
  13. Firstly, my apologies for not checking up on this thread for a while!! I realise that the laws are different from state to state and that ACT may not have the same issues - yet. The point is that the various versions of these laws around Australia all share the same key characteristic - that they are fundamentally unjust and unsound and represent an attack on civil liberties. I have no doubt that many young drivers, whatever their ride, are irresponsible and need to be brought to book in some way. However, the standard laws already on the statute, for dangerous driving, reckless driving, etc. present sufficient means for that, without the imposition of laws that allow unfettered discretion to the boys in blue. I would add that I am unable to spend the time checking threads in each state's area (daft idea, really) so I will leave this thread to those in ACT who care to think about the matter. Perhaps there are some amongst you who will appreciate the greater issue, see it as something worth fighting for and take that fight on in your own way. Cheers.

  16. Firstly, my apologies for not checking up on this thread for a while!! I realise that the laws are different from state to state and that QLD may not have the same issues - yet. 17. Firstly, my apologies for not checking up on this thread for a while!! I realise that the laws are different from state to state and that NT may not have the same issues - yet. I would add that maintaining the argument in each state's thread is also beyond me and the time that I have available. 18. Firstly, my apologies for not checking up on this thread for a while!! My thanks to Floody for an erudite and illuminating contribution to this important debate. I realise that the laws are different from state to state and that Tassie may not have the same issues - yet. So, Floody, if you cannot raise your gaze above the tosh that you have contributed here, then that is a shame. The argument is clearly beyond you. I would add that maintaining the argument in each state's thread is also beyond me and the time that I have available. So I will leave this one to those of you in Tassie who care to think about the matter. Perhaps there are some amongst you who will appreciate the greater issue, see it as something worth fighting for and take that fight on in your own way. To Floody and the rest like him, enjoy yourself in your own little world, while the adults deal with the things that matter. Cheers.
  19. Sounds like we will be well matched - my gearknob is held on by blue electrical tape!! Hmm ... .. .. .. must see if I can get a Nismo knob somewhere. That should add 30 hp by itself!
  20. Having got another play-thing while my engine is being re-built, I will give it a go. It's a GTI-R! Not sure how the trapped nerve in my neck will respond to wearing a helmet, but that's another story! (I have not been having a good time the last few months!!!) Cheers.
  21. My own buying experience is always to buy at the top of my budget. If I try to be sensible and buy X, when for $5k more, I can get X++, I will always be unhappy if I bought X. I do this aware of the running costs and ensuring I can run the b'stard. So, in 2003, I bought a nice R33 GTST, probably stretching my budget, but after a lot of looking and research - and driving cars. I knew I couldn't afford an R34 GTT and even an R32 GTR was out of the question for purchase and running costs. So the R33 was the go. And it suited me for 4 years. Then I did a lot of looking (probably for the last two years I owned the R33!) and I reckoned I had enough to afford a decent R33 GTR. I looked around with money burning a hole in my pocket and thought .. .. Hmmm, I can get an R34 GTR for not much more. Then after a lot of looking I reckoned .. .. ... Hmmm I don't want a '99 car, because there are loads of them in Oz and re-sale will be awful (loads on the interweb not selling), but 2000 and later cars moved relatively quickly and were not much more expensive. So I did more looking and research and then worked out that if I stretched my budget I could get a V Spec, or even a V Spec II or even an M Spec. I talked at length to Danny at Imports101 and he showed me a few cars .. .. .. quite a few cars. I looked at everything that was available on any website anywhere. I bid for a V Spec II Nur and just missed. I bid for a beautiful 2002 M Spec with some tasty mods and just missed. I bid for about six cars at the top of my budget. Then with Danny's guidance, I bid for a very good 2001 V Spec II - and got it. While that was on the boat, more research saw the body kit I wanted on the way (again I had been looking at body kits and goodies for R34 GTRs for about two years!!), plus some basic under bonnet mods. Danny guided me with other stuff and assembled the whole thing. Moral of the story is: don't let others tell you what to get. There is no short cut. Do your own research and make up your own mind. I have done the same for every car I have ever bought. Tell your mate - If that is not what turns you on, don't bother joining an enthusiast forum, because you clearly are not an enthusiast. Cheers. P.S. I am currently looking at Aston Martins. Well, I can dream! P.P.S. There are plenty of articles, books, threads that discuss the pros and cons of the various Skylines, against each other and against the likes of the Supra. Find them. Read them. I did.
  22. Glad to see you have got it fixed. Well done. Now, call me a miserable old git, but I cannot help myself ... ... ... ... I can ignore the "no" rather than "know", as an example of Twitter-youth mangling of our language. But the misuse of "use" , instead of "you" - for God's sake!!! It is the same number of letters, so it is no easier to type!! Just use the right word, why don't you??? Please, to save my blood pressure and be kind to the older generation, use "you" and not "use", because misuse of "use" is not useful! Cheers.
  23. [quote name='Duncan' date='15 Jan 2010, 08:15 PM' post='5037005' Assuming it was an untouched crate motor and only lasted 12000klm, I think you would have a decent claim for warranty under fair trading laws. You would certainly expect that sort of motor/investment to last longer. Unforshunnudly, Inshpector, it was a shecond hand motor. Bought in Japan in another car. The motor was not pulled down before it was installed in mine, but there was some record of it in the previous car. So I cannot claim that from Nissan. Everything that could be checked without pulling it apart was checked and it all looked good. Cheers.
  24. Woe is me. I did not think I would be making a post in this thread! R34 GTR N1 crate motor in a 2001 R34 GTR V Spec II. had the following fitted: Extended oil sump and baffle kit Oil cooler Head drain (back to sump) Two stage oil catch can draining back to sump ATI Harmonic balancer Also had Aluminium radiator and other bits and bobs intended to extend the life of the motor. About 12,000 km after installation of this motor, suffered failure of N1 oil pump. I was at a track day at the time, but was not thrashing it. I doubt that I even red-lined it. The motor was putting out about 430 hp atw. Just pulled engine out. Pictures of oil pump gear follow: Note that the inner drive ring was broken into three pieces and the ohter gear was smashed into lots of pieces! This was the drive gear - broken in three places. This was the pump as we opened it up. The outer gear was in lots of pieces! Boo hoo! And please don't tell me that revving an N1 motor to the redline will cause this. You may be right - but any motor should be designed so that there is a safety margin beyond the red line, so that you can rev to the limit and even slightly beyond, without catastrophic failure. I have seen so much cr#p on forums around the world recently claiming that failures have happened because the unfortunate owner "did not know how to drive an RB26"!!! What a load of bolleaux. If the N1 oil pump cannot be taken safely to the end of the factory defined rev range, then it is a piece of cr#p and totally unsuited for the job it is supposed to do. Note that I had an ATI harmonic balancer on there too, so there should have been no problems with harmonics. There is clearly an inherent problem with the design and/or materials of these pumps, otherwise we would not be getting so many failures. And before some keyboard warrior dismisses this as another cheap oil pump from ebay, this was a genuine Nissan N1 oil pump that came as part of a factory N1 crate engine!! Looking at upgrade options from stock, to RB28 to RB30 - with a Tomei oil pump!!! Bugger. I hate you, N1 oil pumps!!
