Intercoolers - Tube & Fin Vs Bar & Plate
Quinny replied to Quinny's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks for the info guys, I think I might just stick with the GKTech kit, for $400 it is pretty hard to go wrong. I will probably get someone else to fit it though, coz I am useless at that kind of thing. -
How come everyone manages to get such cheap insurance? I am 24, driving for 5 years, one accident. The cheapest quote I got was $1656 with Just Cars, including 60% NCB, but with an $1800 excess for accident or $1300 excess for theft!

Intercoolers - Tube & Fin Vs Bar & Plate
Quinny replied to Quinny's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Ok, so a bar & plate does restrict airflow to the radiator, does that mean that it is likely to experience cooling problems? -
I am wondering what the difference is between a Bar & Plate cooler, and a Tube & Fin cooler. I have been talking to a couple of workshops who reckon the Hybrid Tube & Fin coolers are better than the japanese brand name coolers, because the jap ones use a bar & plate design. The workshop reckons that tube & fin is better because it is physically lighter and flows better. It also allows better flow to the radiator. I was wondering if anyone else can confirm or deny this and also tell me which is better for cooling capacity. The Hybrid Tube & fin cooler is $1400 supplied and fitted which I thought was a bit steep, but if it is as good as they make out, then I don't mind paying the extra cash. But is it really that much better than the $400 GKTech kit?

T3 T04e Turbo 500bhp Rated Garrett Spec
Quinny replied to DEJA VU's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I know of a guy running twin T04 turbos on his Commodore. From memory, he is making 850rwhp @ 18psi, but that is on a 355ci V8, but it gives you some idea of the power potential of the turbos. An RB20 is not going to let you make that sort of power, so I think these turbos might be a touch big for an RB20. BTW, the guy with the Commodore is planning on cranking up to 30psi aiming for 1100hp, but I am not sure if he is planning on using the T04 turbos... -
Thanks r33_racer, I wanted to confirm the PFC wouldn't have any of those problems. I was also planning on using the PFC boost control, but I hope I get more than 170rwkw, but if not, I will get over it. I am more interested in strip times (mid - low 13 sounds good). I think I may have it sorted, GKTech cooler, PFC+Boost Controller, dyno tune....
-
If I was to get the Power FC+Boost control and one of the GKTech coolers, then get it dyno tuned, am I likely to run into any problems? I have heard a few people mention fuel cuts etc that I don't really know much about. Is there anything else I need to know before I go and spend my money on this? I will have a look at the exhaust as well, and see if anything needs to be done there, if I have the money, I will get it done too, if not, I will get it done later. Also, how much power should I expect from this setup, at 10psi?

R32 Standard Boost Gauge, Whats 100xmmhg?
Quinny replied to r32matt's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Not sure about 32s, but the 33 seems to be pretty good. At full throttle, my factory guage reads just above the 350 mark, which is about right because 7psi equates to 362mm/Hg. Below 4000rpm, where the low-boost is in place, the guage reads about 3/4 between 0 and 350, which would be about right or 5psi (or 258mm/hg) -
R32 Standard Boost Gauge, Whats 100xmmhg?
Quinny replied to r32matt's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
It is an abbreviation for "millimetre/Mercury", and the x100 bit is the numbers on the guage need to the multiplied by 100 to get the correct reading (kind of like a tacho being x1000 rpm) - so 7 on your guage would represent 700mm/Hg. The conversion rate is: 1mm/Hg = 0.0193psi (so 1000mm/hg = 19.3psi) 1psi = 51.715mm/Hg (so 10psi = 517.15mm/Hg) 1bar = 14.5psi or 750mm/Hg. In your example, 13psi = 672.3mm/Hg (or 6.723 on your guage) I think you will find that the guage is accurate, you just need to know how to read it. Hope that clears things up. -
I think that Green was really the underdog in this fight. It is pretty well known that Power rarely beats Speed, and Boxers do better than Fighters. Mundine never had a chance to knock Green out, he just waited for Green to attack, open himself up, then Mundine used his speed to strike. As much as I hate to say it, Mundine was the better man. Although I hope he gets knocked out in the title fight, although I doubt it.

I changed my head unit on the weekend, but the new HU does not have a wire for the power antenna, so now the power antenna doesn't work, and therefore I can't use the radio. Is there any other way I can hook the antenna up so that I can use the radio, or do I need to change the whole antenna?
-
Where can you get the PFC for $960? I also need to add a boost controller and fitting of the FMIC to the list. Are the $400 coolers any good, do they come with piping etc?
-
Really? The way I work it out, the PFC cost about $1100, PFC boost controller $400, Tuning $500, that is $2000 just there. I don't think I would get a FMIC + fitting, and exhaust for $1000..... I might let the dyno decide. I will do a run before I do any mods and see how the AFRs and power curve looks, if they look ok, then the FMIC will be the go, if they look a bit dodgy, then the PFC might be a better choice. One question about the PFC, can I get the factory fuel cuts and things like that removed or changed with the PFC? Will the factory fuel cuts cause any problems with extra boost if I run the stock ECU?
-
I don't really know too much about turbo engines (V8s on the other hand...) so I will be leaving the fitting, tuning etc of everything in the hands of professionals. I want an electronic boost controller rather than a manual one. If I get the Power FC, I will get the boost controller kit with that.

I have about $3000 to spend on mods for my R33 GTS-T, and I am just wondering where that money is best spent. I did do a search, but I got too many threads which had nothing to do with what I am after..... The car is basically stock except a HKS pod, and exhaust (I think it is cat-back). I was thinking of doing one of the following (though I am open to suggestions) - 1. Power FC computer, Boost Controller, and do a dyno tune with about 8-9psi. 2. FMIC (a good one, not a cheap crap one) and boost controller, run about 10psi, but I am not sure if this will cause problems without the car being properly tuned. I basically want to get as much power as I can, but without taking risks on reliability. I would like to get the FMIC and the Power FC, but I just don't think I have the budget for it. Should I consider using the SAFC instead - the car will not get modified much beyond the mods I have listed (around 180-200rwkw will suffice). That $3000 also needs to include labour for fitting, tuning and whatever because I am not too familiar with Skyline engines yet, so I can't really do the work myself. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Mate, you had me fooled into thinking you were just a stupid kid wanting to pick a fight. Although, I thought I had heard of URMINE before. In light of the recent findings, I apologise for any direct insults. Although you did kind of deserve it

You are not talking to a half-witt, trying to defend your comments by twisting the wording and making out like I misunderstood them is not going to work. You are not asking for opinions, you are expressing an opinion, which you should have kept to yourself. Again, it shows you have no idea about cars, talking about Hybrid cars, after you make a comment about preferring Commodores. I dare say that you have no idea how a Hybrid car works, or their impact on the environment apart from generic articles you have probably read in a 2nd-rate magazine. Fair enough that you don't like Skylines. The people on this forum don't care that you don't like Skylines. If you don't like them, why are you here? You have probably never driven a Skyline and have no basis for comparison. I have no time or care for people who obviously just want to pick a fight, so this is Quinny signing off.
-
Age does matter, because you come on here and act like a tosser, when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. By the sound of things, you have no appreciation for cars, you probably have a family member or mate that has a Commodore which you think is the best and fastest thing on the road, but you have no idea, you need to wake up to yourself. If you have nothing constructive to contribute to the forum, then bother someone else. Anyway, that is my rant. If you are going to come on here and bait people into an arguement, then good for you. I have no inclination to get into an arguement with someone who has no idea about cars, and evidently has the IQ of a house brick.
-
Mate, do you even have a car? Or a licence? How old are you? You say you like Commodores, have you ever driven a car in your life? It seems that you are very immature, whether that be because you are a 14 year old kid who likes making a pain of himself, or because you are a bogan who does not appreciate other peoples taste in cars remains to be seen. Either way, we could do without your kind on our forum. Funny, the person posting a thread called "Why are Skylines crap" should come out with a line of "don't hate, appreciate". Idiot.
-
Commodores can be nice cars, some people do stupid mods and make them look crap, but I have had a couple of V8 Commodores, and I still appreciate Commodores now. I bought a Skyline because the quality is so much better. The interior and handling are far superior to Commodores, they have a nice smooth, easy revving engine, and they have a sexy 2-door body shape. What more could you want. I love my V8s, but I have a Skyline now, and I am pretty happy with it. Commodores are not anything special really, I just like the engines. They have poor build quality, they are big and heavy, and just as inefficient on fuel as a Skyline. The fact that you came on to a Skyline forum, and posted a thread called "Why are Skylines crap" is really quite sad. If you don't like them, go away.
-
I have always wanted to do a V8 Skyline. I was planning to do a Holden 5.0L into an R32, but I just don't have the cash to do it properly. I worked out to do what I wanted would cost me about $50k. Got any pics of yours? What engine did you use, what has been done to it?
-
I will be running a Power FC computer when I get the tune done and up the boost, so I imagine that things like Fuel Cuts will be taken care of. Please correct me if I am wrong.
-
I might just split the difference, make it 9psi until I get the FMIC, then go 10-11, maybe 12. Then look at a new turbo once I have a fuel pump, regulator and new injectors...............crap! I am doing it again.... I just can't help myself....
-
Actually I think it was done to stick it up the Skyline boys rather than the Holden fans. I have long been a Holden fan (still am), I currently have a VN SS with a 350hp baby stroker sitting in the Garage, which is just begging to find its way into my R33..... Tempting, but I don't think I will do it. If I was going to do a V8 Skyline, then I would do a Supercharged 355 V8 or something similar - it would have to be a 10sec package to make it really stand out. It would be kind of stupid going to all that trouble and getting beaten by mildly modified Skylines....
