Turbo Replacement/upgrade - Your Thoughts?
DaveB replied to pixel8r's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
Ah, I get you now... hadn't realised that there was that much difference in lag either. 240rwkw still sounds pretty good (I don't think that will 'limit' me); that's not as bad as I thought then for a '32 turbo. Looks like any second-hand turbo will do pretty much, but I'll be aiming for a '33. Not sure what my '34 turbo is worth as it is whistling a bit; probably rubbing? Does that count as 'blown' lol? Thanks Tangles. cool sig btw - changes daily lol!? -
Well did the 'blow-by-test'... if anyone's interested this is pretty much all I think is involved... I did a fair bit of driving, and I made sure that it was boosting hard for some of it (ie. up a hill at WOT in 3rd or 4th) and there was no sign of oil on the rag... so I don't think I have excessive blow-by but someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Ah ok thanks, I thought that was it. I think I will see if I can put a deposit down so I don't have to send my turbo off first. -

Yeah seems it just doesn't get more bolt-on than the GCG; opened my eyes to how much it can cost just making a turbo fit re the oil line; I did think of Pirtek. For that sort of price I'll do it. bit confused re. selling my turbo... doesn't GCG take your turbo as a trade-in? -
Sorry Tangles meant the centre of wheel to under guard measurements... mine's ~400mm and it's *high*
-
...ah. Well I guess that's fairly terminal. i did wonder why they were machined really rough like that on the inside!! Well I will just check for excessive blow-by anyway, 'cause I'm a bit paranoid about 'ring-lands'/stuffed piston rings... have begun investigations into a replacement turbo. At this stagea it looks like it's gonna have to be a GCG hi-flow Better to replace before I end up with bits of something in the engine rather than after I guess (small chance if just the exhaust wheel goes I guess, but just in case...)

Well, I spoke to Morrie at hpinabox about the 2871R for RB25 today. Unfortunately it's not a completely straight-forward swap; there is most of the usual fiddling required... - water outlet is M14 (Garett); stock fitting is M18 (Nissan) - needs a reducer, easy if you can find one - oil return needs 'filing out'? Not exactly sure what that means, I think he meant the return pipe fitting needed enlarging... but it can apparently be made to fit the stock return easily - inlet may need a reducer, depending on inlet size selected (and he couldn't remember off the top of his head what the stock size of inlet pip is) - Morrie recommended fairly strongly that oil line should be replaced with the turbo anyway, to prevent the old one clogging (perhaps braided lines are less susceptible to this than the solid copper ones) apart from those hurdles, it does at least have the standard exhaust inlet (T3) and will mount to the exhaust manifold OK, and has the standard Nissan dump connection (6-bolt). The actuator is included, and is set to 14PSI. I didn't even get to asking whether the exhaust housing had threaded bolt holes to accept the factory turbo heatshield; I am guessing that it doesn't? So yeah I would suggest that if these modifications are within your capabilities (& patience/time constraints), that this would be a pretty cost-effective upgrade... but for me I think it is going to have to be the GCG, as I just can't see myself messing about with a turbo more than replacing the turbo & oil line. -
Nice... that's a good ride height I think. What height is it centre to guard or how many fingers?
-
Holy crap, they're WIDE. I have some R33 GTR rims on my S2 and they are 9" wide which looks huge... but yours are sitting an inch outside the guards... looks cool though. Must make it just about look like a steam-roller from the front

Alarms And Immobilisers Questions...
DaveB replied to GoldZilla's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
Hi guys, digging up an old thread; I need to find somewhere in Adelaide to install a Mongoose M80G in my stagea, someone who has at least worked on imports... does anyone know of a good place in Adelaide who has worked on imports? I have seen some dodgy alarm installs... I'll be pulling as much off as I can to make it easier for them... but yeah don't want anyone making a mess of my wiring. Thanks DaveB -

Thanks guys. Hadn't considered injectors; I guess max is pretty similar for R33/R34 (I think it's about 370cc's). I will ask about the intake, whether it will take the 90 degree elbow off the standard turbo or whether something will have to be adapted. Also asking them about actuator (ie. does it come with one? what pressure?), oil & water lines (because if it costs me another $200 then it's suddenly not worth it) and whether it will fit under the stanadard heatshield, and *does it have the threads to accept the standard heatshield* because I don't really want to run without a heatshield. Oh, and if the dump is the same flange (I think it is - says T3 though and I thought RB's were T4). Will let you know what I hear... -

Reply from hpinabox was "~240rwkw" and "very good lag wise". I'm guessing that with the slightly lower top-end it should spool a bit lower? However the GT30 sounded a bit laggy by comparison. Guess I need to ask the usual questions like is it a steel exhaust wheel, does it come with actuator/what pressure, etc. There is a GT2871R, GT3071R and GT3076R on hpinabox's site, all under $2,000... On hpinabox u have the turbo comparison chart which I found handy; 2871R comes in 48 compressor wheel trim (model=GT35, 390hp) or 52 compressor wheel trim (model=GT35, 440hp). Exhaust housing/wheel looks to be the same in both cases (76 trim). Obviously the extra top end is appealing, especially since there is no difference in price from what I can see (you just specify the trim you want). But I wonder if the 52 trim would be noticeably laggy? Surely no more than the GCG hiflow, which makes the same or a bit more, power? I thought the 2871R turbo looked an appealing option because: - I was told $1,795 brand new, bolt-on for RB25, ~240rwkw (yet to find out if that includes postage/postage cost if it doesn't) - that's about the cost of an (awesome) GCG hi-flow, but makes slightly less power BUT I would then have a RB25 NEO turbo to sell to recoup a few hundred dollars or so, bringing the total cost nearer $1,500. What do you guys think? I don't know much about turbos... one could so easily be caught out by installing something they didn't know was going to be laggy, or had a limited top-end for their engine application etc etc If I can get stock-like spool/"lagginess" and just over 200awkw out of this 2871R I would be happy -
Thanks Mike, that's good thinking - exactly what I'll do Ah well better turbo than engine... I've never felt confident in the turbo, what with the loud whine which hasn't gone away after replacing gaskets... an excuse to fix it so I can feel confident at 10 or even 12 PSI would be OK.
-
Thanks Mike; yeah I really hope it's not blow-by!!! that would suck (like $3000+ suck). Engine only has (supposedly) ~110,000Ks on it. I change oil + filter religiously at 5,000Ks, mobil 1. Here are couple of pic's; I will get into the pipes this week when I plan to replace exhaust studs and gasket. Nice big detailed pics... sorry if u'r on dialup! (but, seriously, how do you use these forums on dialup???)

Hmm... just thought... since u'r pulling doors apart, how much for would you sell driver's door seal (off the door, not the car)? -

Thanks wolverine; that's interesting... yeah the price is pretty close between the two; also anyone seen/had experience with the GT2871 on horsepowerinabox.com ? They say they're a bolt-on replacement, and cost quoted was $1795... looks about the same performance as the 2530 to me (ie. slightly less top end than GCG hiflow - ~240RWKW they said). But I could then sell my turbo and make the excercise about the cost of a 2nd-hand 2530... hmm. Hmm best quote I have found was about $100 more than that from a place in Adelaide... is there still an SAU price available for the R34 (NEO) turbo GCG hi-flow? -

Great stuff thanks Tangles! This is completely OT... but do you know if those Nismo FPRs suit the NEO RB25 or are the NEOs different? No details about NEO on Nengun. -

Thanks wolverine; yeah at nearly 2 and a half grand it was gonna be pretty expensive... I can't think of too many more expensive options actually, without going over-the-top. Being able to put everything back right where it was though is just going to save me money; I mean heatshield, dump pipe, manifold, oil & water lines... if I don't have to spend money on any of that stuff I'll save heaps. Yeah that's pretty much what I thought after reading about all the GCG stuff and pixel8r's experiences in other threads here... Bill said that they'd done a stagea with the GT30 option and the guy was really impressed..... Turbo upgrade seems to be a bit of a minefield; best to go with something tried & tested. For me that means a GCG hi-flow because I get to keep my standard turbo, OR, perhaps this 2530? I have been looking for info' on it to find out how much power it's good for? I have so far only read about people putting them on an SR20 with a T2 housing. -

thanks Tangles, $200 per year sure is good value.... waaaay less then it'll cost me in fuel How much power is the 2530 good for/how much lag? -

Resurrecting an old thread here... my turbo is also on the way out, 'zzzziing'/whining noise gets pretty loud sometimes, especially when it is cold. I have investigated GCG hi-flow (around $1,750-$1,850) and the GT30 rebuild ($2,450 !?!) both prices I checked ATS in Adelaide... the guy there (Bill I think it was?) was sure that the GCG was more laggy than the GT30... and also that he preferred the GT30 because "at least you know you're getting a new unit"... hmmm Anyway, I thought I'd "do a Tangles" and check eBay just in case, and I came across a deal which looked too good to be true, and thus probably is. I thought I'd run it past everyone here first... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...n%3D4%26ps%3D42 What do you think? -
Hey BigDirtyJase how'd this work out?

Hi there, I had a bit of a search for this problem but I can't find anything specific... I have been getting a small (but growing) puddle of oil on top of the coilpack cover, under the join in the J-pipe. I can't see where it's coming from; I am guessing it is leaking out of the J-pipe join? There is only one other vacuum hose which runs under there; I *think* that runs to the boost sensor on the firewall. Sorry for lack of pics; I will take some tomorrow. But I thought this might be a common problem... if the turbo was worn, would this cause oil to escape here? after the intercooler? Thanks DaveB
