hi all i recently swapped out my motor and bolted up a new turbo etc to go with, ecu, dyno tune etc etc. problem is, the car seems to lack midrange power. it makes plenty above 5000rpm, which is nice, but the turbo should really be making its power from 3500rpm. R33 RB25DET standard gcg hi-flow turbo 480cc injectors + pump fmic greddy copy plenum 3in split dump + gutted cat 3.5in cat back ebc splitfire coilpacks ems stinger ecu with map sensor my run is the highest blue line without dots. i plotted two lines (with dots) above that to show comparisons from other RB25s who are also running gcg hi-flows at 16-18psi. as you can see, theyre making 25-40kw more than me in the midrange, but almost identical peak power. this is very irritating since the whole reason i chose that turbo was so the car would be more responsive! im at a bit of a loss as to how i could be losing this power, so ill outline some possible weaknesses of my setup. -ems stinger ecu. running batch injection and waste spark. i realise this is not perfect, but all the information ive read tells me this shouldnt be a major problem. -small throttle. the intake piping to the throttle is 3in, but the factory throttle is only 2.5in. would this be a big restriction? doesnt seem to affect peak power... -soft wastegate. with the ebc off, boost only gets up to about 10psi. but with the ebc on the dyno the car makes 18psi at 3600rpm so i doubt this is a problem. -pod filter sucking engine bay air. im going to get some cold air into that soon. -boost leaks. theres a few small ones i am aware of so im in the process of replacing silicone joints etc. despite making 18psi at 3600rpm, if small leaks force the turbo to work harder in the midrange, will keeping the wastegate closed longer restrict exhaust flow/power? should i ask them to have another go at tuning it?

too late. never mind.

How Does The Cylinder Firing Order Work?
gt-ahhh! replied to gt-ahhh!'s topic in Engines & Forced Induction
why then is a reputable sydney tuner telling me to steer clear of afm's because of 'reversion' problems? and 'over-fuelling' on gear changes/throttle closure? i have seen afms on massive power cars, but who am i supposed to trust? ps: the stinger has temperature and barometric pressure compensation. i dont like the idea of batch injection, but ive been told from two ecu manufacturers now that efficiency is only reduced by 5-10% and driveability losses can hardly be noticed. and at full boost it makes no difference since the injectors are close to constant cycle anyway. -

is that right? when i had it done last year the story was it cant be re-tuned. so now they save a tune file onto a chip and can basically cut + copy new information into the chip? very interesting... oh well. for a few hundred $ more i hope its worth staying loyal to my preferred tuner. -

because nistune uses airflow meters (as does pfc) which my tuner is not a fan of. also, nistune cant be retuned. if you make any modifications later nistune is much harder and expensive to adjust than a plug and play ecu eg: haltech. if i was an envy imports regular id probably lean more towards nistune, i have heard a lot of good things about it. but my tuner has advised me differently. and i plan to sell the car soon, im sure whoever buys it will appreciate an ecu they can easily retune if they add modifications. -

already have a z32. but i suppose i could sell it, its only seen 10000km or so. -
hello, im looking at ecu options for my rb25. looking for 240+rwkw with gcg hi-flow and supporting mods. basically im down to: envy imports nistune ~$1300 ems stinger ~$1400 full management (haltech, pfc) ~$2400+ money is a factor, obviously, otherwise id just fork out for a haltech and be done with it (and id drive an r34 gtr lol) i previously had a nistune which may have contributed to engine failure. the car was running so rich it gunked up the motor and seized a valve. and so i am leaning towards the ems stinger. what i want to know is this. the stinger apparently only has 4 output cycles (forgive my lack of ecu-speak) for injector pulse and/or ignition firing. im told that in 6 cylinder applications tuners use 3 outputs but apply them to 2 cylinders each. to my limited knowledge, this sounds very inefficient and defeats the purpose of multipoint injection and sequential ignition. im told the drivability will suffer slightly off boost, but peak power etc will be fine. however an advantage is a map sensor, which seems a much better setup with atmo bovs and decent power etc. do the cylinders all fire one after the other ie: 1.2.3.4.5.6 (whatever the order is) or 12.....34......56?

you could maybe search in the for sale section here. people are always wrecking these engines. or try nissan genuine parts i guess?

i have for sale a 3 inch split dump/front pipe. it was made by liverpool exhaust a few weeks ago and is brand new (can supply receipt). has only been removed from packaging to spray with black high temp manifold paint (it has blue high temp undercoat from the shop). the pipe will bolt straight onto a standard R33 RB25 turbo or equivalent, and eliminates the need for a front pipe. has a good long pipe for the wastegate, and is 3 inch from turbo to cat. also has port for o2 sensor. reason for sale: decided on a different set up. paid $350. will accept $250 ono. bargain! see pics. south west syd location. can arrange pick up drop off if desired, might be cheaper than postage/freight. good trader rating. reply here, pm or text 0400551284. thanks, mitch

have a look in the classifieds on this site. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Sa...-Parts-f12.html search 'rb20' or whatevs. ive bought lots of parts off this site, its been very helpful. while youre at it though, forget the rb20 and get a some real powah (rb25) lolcat good luck

see this link http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/32...spec+difference you can normally find all this sort of info on here! i just did lol. use the search function and have a bit of a dig. some people get annoyed when people repost topics as you have done! cheers!

thanks for replies/offers. im planning to pick one up on thurs!

hi im about to buy a replacement motor and im wondering if you can perform a compression test on it while its out of the car? my mate seems to think you can, but a thread on here left me wondering if you need the gbox attached, and sump full of oil. i also realise its meant to be done near operating temp but this is obviously impossible. its an rb25det, and i have a starter motor and battery to crank it over. thanks for any and all help!
-
thanks heaps for the offer. im not sure exactly whats wrong with the blown one. im probably going to go ahead and drop a new motor in, but would you be interested in patching up the blown motor once i check it out? obviously i would pay you. im quite interested to have a go at something like that! how nice of you to offer haha
-
im pulling my RB25det out this week. cylinder 4 has zero compression, but ill let you know if the heads all good.
-
in case anyone was interested, im dropping a new motor in. and for some reason im contemplating a bigger turbo and retune. change of heart lol.
-
hi guys, searching for an rb25det motor. preferably series 1, though im not sure if it really matters. the ignitor is different on series 2 i believe? blown my engine and need to replace it. could be interested in a turbo and ecu as well. probably restricted to used, tight budget. let me know what youve got! cheers, mitch

hey mate, do you still have the motor? -
ill sell it to you for $7000.... is that your idea of super cheap lol? im not sure whats causing the lack of compression. i will speak to my mechanic and see if its worth further inspection, could be a seized valve or something. then id only have to replace the head. its very puzzling though, an intake joint between the turbo and intercooler blew off when the problem appeared. originally we thought it was a timing belt slip, retarded timing, backfire etc... but ive got no idea now.
-
haha everyone loves that front bar! i bought it off ebay, from a fellow called "mybodykits" from memory. its top secret style. i got it for like $350 delivered too! needed a little work to accomodate the intercooler and mount some indicators, but it looks sexy eh? in regards to loving my car... i loved it once. if i replace the motor ill still sell it. ive got a daily now, so i want a 300+rwkw gtrrrrr for my weekender.
