Is your catch can vent to atmosphere? A bit hard to see in your photos.

You will need it with big boost and a motor that may have slightly bigger ring gaps for big power. On boost the crank case will need to breathe through the oil galleries then through the head/cam covers/head drain (crank case vent really). Sure the sump oil return is there to "return" oil but you'll find it will end up being another crank case vent on boost lol. The one way valve is a neat trick however you'll just overwhelm the other paths.

I think to really get this to work, you'll need 2x sump vents (either side) to a catch can, cam covers to the catch can and a big atmospheric vent. The 2x sump vents will also act as drains when needed.

FWIW, I have a 5.5L catch can in my shit box. So far the trip to Luddenham for its first shakedown has shown the setup works.

Yep the bottle is in the back left of the engine bay as a temporary ghetto fix.

Engine is built pretty tight as far as I know and boost is pretty low also.

There is a crankcase vent line from the left side of the block to catch can as well as sump return with one way valve. The upper can breathes through the Racepace one and all seems good so far.

Will see how it goes at higher RPM and longer loaded tracks 🤞

  2. Post test updates...

Car is working near perfect with only a few minor tweaks to the brakes needed and some fresh rubber before next time out on track. We tested a new breather setup and although it looks a bit ghetto it worked perfectly with nothing but ethanol vapour in the bottle after about 70 laps. Ghetto diff breather also worked with no oil issue at all now.

Rear suspension was good, need to get the car on a bigger circuit to feel car balance but I think we've gone from too much understeer to potentially an oversteer situation but will test at SMSP or similar before I make any changes. The rear is planted and very stable with the solid subframe and inserts -

    image.thumb.jpeg.1a3e96b1995b4021a4976d0780f4bb6c.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.49303aabcef5e3f9b51f52006bf6519a.jpeg

One issue we had at the hillclimb track which has been an issue in the past is the diff breather line filling with oil and acting as a siphon due to the routing, add a cheapo fuel filter to separate air bubbles from oil and had no issues at all, can't actually see any oil at all which is a good start. This setup is temporary for testing -

    image.thumb.jpeg.199a00402888623eeb0ff49b4e519758.jpeg

The engine breather setup has been giving me hassles for years with around 4 different shops having their own attempts at fabbing catch cans with none of them working... After so many attempts I tried to isolate where the oil was coming from whether it be the sump or the cam covers but still not 100% sure. This setup has a return to sump with modified one way valve (thanks to DVS Jez) and had breathers running from 1 cam cover and also from the block to equalize pressure. In standard form it would pull oil into the air filter and didn't work. I added the Boost Doc cam plates to the back and still found the same issue occurring so decided to remove the return to the intake and run it into a Soda Stream bottle and also to give the oil in the cam covers a chance to separate air and oil by running up to a secondary cylinder (Again thanks to DVS Jez for the lend). Using all scrap bits and fittings I had laying around the shed I mocked up the design below and test all day with perfect results, so I will be looking to get a proper neater version made up at some stage -

    image.thumb.jpeg.4fdc6ebbb670cdeaf292611b918bf567.jpeg

The car looked so good once back together! Over the past few years it's been apart numerous times and having it all back in one bit and out and about was a good feeling!

Our Go Pro was a POS as usual... Between the old Go Pro 3 that is flogged and worn out and the newer Go Pro 8 that has terrible battery life and a mind of its own we haven't managed to get much footage from the past few events 💩

I'll work on that for the next time out on track.

Out of curiosity, is it too much power for a small track like that? Did you go more than half throttle at any time? :)

There was a guy driving the same track in a go kart in the related videos. It's interesting seeing the contrast. In the kart it feels like tons of space and lots of full throttle. Can't really compare the two but makes me wonder whether it suits the track more. Here's a link with timestamp of the lap start.

@soviet_merlin Power levels are probably OK but the tyre grip available not so much... And no, most of it was part throttle or short shifting to keep the rear of the car settled as anything over a few PSI boost saw it sideways. Later in the day I changed lines to try better suit the car but was also being mindful that the rear of the car was getting pretty close to concrete on a few occasions.

There were shifter karts there on the day as well and they are tiny compared to the heavyweight R34 so its impossible to compare the 2 in lap times, speeds and lines etc... 150kg vs 1500kg lol

I'll go back again on better rubber and will soften the rear of the car and probably go a couple of seconds quicker with some cleaner less conservative lines. We were there to test a few things on the car which went pretty well, had limited E85 and 2016 tyres so weren't really prepped for fast laps!

Good to see you out there enjoying the cars mate, hope all is well outside cars too.

Keen to see what time you do at SMSP.

Thanks Mate! All good here and hope the same with you!

I think the previous PB was a mid 1.39 at SMSP but we should be able to make a decent improvement on that with some seat time and now the car is better setup. Keen to get back there once I iron out a few reliability things.. RB Lyfe!

    Welcome back,

Man that turbo saga sounds like a nightmare.

86 is not a bad toy either to get some seat time!

The 86 has been amazing for seat time and will only improve the driving in the 34.

The hillclimb run in the 34 was fun the other day but really keen to get it up to speed on track and see how it goes, It always struggled with rotation due to the way the rear end was setup but I think I may be on top of it now.

Gotta speak to Racepace again about the catch can setup and how to improve as its still a PITA

Hoping Wakefield opens up again soon as it was my benchmark for times and improvements with the PB of 62.4 in a last session and no decent laps back at the track since! Keen to get back and improve as it had plenty left -

  6. 4 years since last post update? I think it is due for one... Lol

There will be a tonne of stuff I have missed but I'll just chuck on what comes to mind for now.

Most of the stuff we do in both cars will be posted on the WOOTTEN RACING Facebook page which is run by my wife, I no longer have social media or Insta etc hence why I've been slack with updates. I'll try to keep this thread alive as well as its a good documentary on how the 34 went from near stock to what it is today.

    Toyota 86 update -

Going strong, swapped back to budget Chinese 240TW street tyres and the car has never been so much fun. Tyres are due for a change after 300 plus laps of Wakefield plus a couple of days at the local hillclimb track. Gearbox is a bit crunchy at times but fresh oil sorts that out, for 120 odd kw it is a killer little combo and punches well above its weight - Credit to Jake the previous owner for the suspension work, a few tweaks to stiffen the rear and it was mint! Since we purchased the car we really only added a Roll Cage and spare set of rims with most other mods being minor items. Brakes were upgraded to DBA5000 rotors after basically splitting one in half and now work mint thanks to Matt @ Race Brakes in Sydney for the help and support!

The 86 will remain an NA budget training tool with all funds going to the 34, its a great platform and can do most things well enough in its current form so I'll just enjoy it. The 86 can fill the void and do wet days or smaller circuits where the 34 isn't ideal.

Last run at Wakefield (RIP) was doing 1.10s on the street rubber which was good fun -

    R34GTT update -

After a complete fk around with our local Hardy Spicer dealer and nearly 2 years without a tailshaft we have finally dealt with a decent company and got the issues resolved (Massive thanks to Gibsons Driveshaft Services - If you need a tailshaft tell em I sent ya). The original Alpha Omega shaft I purchased became an issue with clearance once I put the entire GKTECH catalogue in the rear of the car and raised the subframe trying to fix the rear suspension issues, to overcome the issue I had to get a smaller diameter shaft made which works well.

    image.thumb.jpeg.72f0ad6d6a196784ea987eeb6eec0a28.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.367aabf2d963fc0d2bec1752ce1481f0.jpeg

So rear suspension is now mostly pillowball GKTECH items with the driftworks proper hicas delete arms added as well. Coilovers remain the MCA reds which work perfectly now! Previously I had stock lower arms with hardrace arms and a mix of rubber and urethane joints. DNA Autosport got the alignment duties and I have been more than impressed by their professional and passionate approach to the car and the knowledge they possess.

    image.thumb.jpeg.b09c02055a70242b16e0b648ec352096.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.48f2d859e403967231891a418c53851f.jpeg

Turbo has been another saga with EFR number 3 effectively on the car now, the original 8374 had bearing noise from what they think was oil starvation and I can only assume that was pre-engine build with the old tired RB25. As the EFRs couldn't be repaired at that time I purchased a new ally supercore from GCG and ran it up after fitment and found it tighter than normal and not spooling down, discussed with GCG and was told it would all be fine so ran it at Wakefield for a couple of laps in 2019 and the cooler pipes were glowing. Took the turbo along with the old one back to GCG and showed the comparison and after a full tear down the turbo was returned to me with "No fault found" however it spun freely and the issue is resolved (Something not quite right there but either way it was fixed). I then attempted to fit a Turbosmart pressure reg to the turbo feed line to regulate oil pressure but found it was rubbish and inconsistent, went back to the old restrictor "pill" style method and so far so good! Also had Hi Spool turbos rebuild and refresh the old EFR (Which I was told couldn't be done by others) and he added the T51r mod to the front housing so the car has the right sounds now!

    image.thumb.jpeg.ed7cd9dd35f2c5365e93dbdd90a9091e.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.c64d9e51ea42c1f0661b105254bd0a8d.jpeg

After the turbo issues Jez run the car up on the dyno to check everything was OK and it made the same power and curve as previous which was a good start. Due to sitting for so long I put in new Bosch 1650cc injectors and filter elements and a fresh batch of E85 and the car ran up around the 400kw at 20psi mark which was always the target for the build.

    image.thumb.jpeg.50233f6541042557bc33697be5652bf3.jpeg

Fab work and hot side was the other major issue I had due to shitty fabrication and the shitshow that followed with failure after failure which ended up causing me to get the shits and quit motorsport for a while. It is amazing how a bad experience can make you want to set the car on fire! Luckily buying the Go Kart and then the Toyota 86 got the bug back and then I put the effort in to get the 34 sorted. We are also lucky there are still some half decent people in the Motor Industry to help along the way.

DVS Tuning - Jez has always been supportive and since he has been looking after the tuning its been amazing!

Race Brakes Sydney - Matt is always really helpful and has the parts for any car!

Gibsons Driveshaft Services - Chris and team really went out of their way to help get me on track

DNA Autosport - Andre and team were amazing with the way they handled the alignment duties

Pro Car Mechanical - Martin helped me with both the Go Kart and the Toyota 86. Also knows RBs well!

There are others that have also helped along the way like Ash at Streamline Automotive, Ryan at K Racing

    What's next?

The 34 needs a few tweaks to the catch can setup and also the diff breather setup but apart from needing new rubber soon it will be good to go on track again as soon as I get a chance. We may give Pheasant Wood a crack before we worry about SMSP as I'd really like to dial out any Gremlins before having a decent crack. The ultimate goal is to get it reliable enough to be able to chuck on the trailer and take to multiple day events anywhere around Australia as I'd really like to get back to Winton, want to try Phillip Island and hopefully also get to The Bend in SA at some point! Morgan Park and QR are also on the radar once I get it sorted!

The 86 needs new rubber as well as consistent launches at the last hillclimb test day killed the rear tyres so I'll chuck another set of Zeknova tyres at it and keep thrashing! Next stop for the 86 will likely be Luddenham. The 86 can do most smaller tracks and events and also goes alright in the wet so it can fill in the gaps.

Both cars will be used for a variety of events, with Wakefield Park being temporarily closed I will use this time to do other events like Hillclimbs and sprints but the main focus will be circuit work.

  7. For Sale - Brand new never used Alpha Omega single piece tailshaft to quit R34GTT coupe only (Custom made item).

    As per link - http://alphaomegaracing.com/p/143/c/71/All-Products/ALPHA-OMEGA/MONSTAR-Tailshaft-Skyline-GTST-GTT-RWD.html

Reason for sale - Will no longer fit in the tunnel due to clearance issues since I raised the subframe to alter suspension arm angles etc. The decision to change the rear end setup was made after the purchase of the tailshaft so I have had Hardy Spicer built a custom 2pc shaft with smaller shaft diameter to overcome the issue but a 34 with standard subframe position should allow fitment of the shaft.

    20210912_123652.thumb.jpg.2d0a8a1a6ed48771d0392a497b39016e.jpg

Due to prolonged storage since being built the shaft has had a new yoke fitted by Hardy Spicer driveshafts due to light surface rust, original part to be supplied with the sale. It will get a clean up and will come with all the stickers etc supplied by the guys at Alpha Omega.

    20210912_123721.thumb.jpg.17cf4452a6e2169b449ae334ebb47c2d.jpg

Tailshaft cost around $1300 delivered plus an additional $300-350 (TBA - Have receipt for the work by Hardy Spicer) to fit new yoke. New yoke and unit are an upgraded crossover supplied by Hardy Spicer due to availability.

Sale price $1000 firm and I will not ship it due to the fragile nature of the product. Given the current Covid restrictions in NSW this will be something that will need to be collected once the lockdown lifts unless a contactless pickup can be safely arranged.

No rush to sell with the lockdown in place and the price is firm.

PS - I will be doing another post soon with hardrace suspension arms, works wheels, GKTECH hicas lock bars, Aluminium radiator cooling panel, exhaust parts, Complete Go Kart racing package and a bunch of other skyline parts once the lockdown is over to help fund a bigger shed build with the addition of another race car and not a lot of space to spare.

I had wondered where you had got to over the last year or two, sucks to see you having dramas mate. I knew you w ere having issues with workshop and had some unhappiness with tuner a couple of years ago but didn't realize it was still continuing!

    Bump for reply @BakemonoRicer

Yeah it wasn't by choice, but simply a case of not being able to afford to continue to fix other peoples f**k ups!

Just want to clarify, the ONLY reliable thing I had on the car was the tuner once I switched to DVS JEZ, best decision I ever made with the car and the only reason it got as far as it did!

The car will be back, it is getting work done in the background but I have purchased another race car to use to get laps in at the track whilst the 34 goes through the repair process!

You could go with a Sinco twin scroll manifold with a big single gate. Keeps it simpler but you still get all the benefits of a twin scroll setup.

Sinco manifolds divide all the way to the gate, unlike other big name brands that just stop at the collector (pretty pointless).

I've used a couple of manifolds and being a vital part of the car I would hesitate to use any brand I didn't know, I'll probably ditch the EFR and return to something simple but will make that choice once I get it running again and assess the reliability of the whole setup!

I'm not shitbagging EFR in general as the power and response is fantastic, I just think the combination of what I have and who built the engine, manifolds, gates etc may be the problem! But in saying that to have a turbo fail and then another fail in a completely unrelated way from new doesn't inspire confidence... Please note this was after much diagnosis and concerned phone calls to GCG about the lack of ability to spool down etc!

I will keep at it and will post back here more often.

  9. Just so people know it's not an isolated incident! This is my brand new compressor cover from a 8374 alloy supercore that I purchased to replace my old turbo which has a slight bearing noise which I put down to oil starvation due to a restrictor put in the line from the Fabricator even though it was clearly stated not to run one with this turbo.

Not only did the new cover look like shit the new turbo was overly "tight" from factory and after numerous phone calls and diagnostics with GCG I was told it was fine and to run it... Did a few warm up laps at Wakefield Part and just about melted the cold side piping and cooler due to the turbo issue as it was glowing hot!

Took the turbo back to GCG for warranty repairs and had it stripped, assessed and re-assembled with no fault found but now the turbo spins freely and spools down as it should.

Car had not been run on a track since that day as I have zero confidence in the setup and I am strongly considering selling the whole hot side and going back to a single gate, single scroll basic setup to remove potential failure points!

The turbo was only one of many issues with my cars setup, since the build it has lifted the head, gates have come loose, gate lines/fittings have melted or broken and the thing wont keep oil in the engine!

The reason my car hasn't seen the track in nearly 2 years is shonky workmanship in a big $ build and left hanging with an expensive POS that I can't drive for more than a session!

I will build it back up again and get it on track soon but I doubt it will be with an EFR still fitted!

End of rant..... Actually probably not..... 🤬

Apparently the engine is back from the machine shop and will begin assembly soon i believe...

Whilst the car has been off the track i have had the time to do a lot of maintenance which has been much needed!

Front Pads and new rotor rings.

    New steering rack bushes

    Front wheel bearings

Front Kingpin bearings (Front right was shot causing tyre failures)

New clutch slave and braided line

    Clutch freshened up

MCA Red suspension serviced and modified

New injectors and fuel pumps (Just changing for safety)

New Hankook Z221 rubber on all 4 corners

Fresh Motul oils in gearbox and diff

This list will keep getting longer but it makes sense to get it all done while i have it apart as we plan on doing more track days than ever over the next few years! We will be doing as many events as we can afford!

Ill take some pics and update when i get time!

  14. Hankook Z221 in medium will last me over a year thrashing and still perform even when worn! The last set i ran from late 2016 to the end of 2017 which i worked out was probably 300-400 laps... Same tyres still did a 1.39 at EC and then blew a front the next session lol....

A mate is importing container loads of the ZESTINO tyres and getting good reviews, ill be testing their competition Semi Slick in April at this stage which is between a slick and semi... They also do the street semis which are cheap and apparently comparable to the Z222 from Hankook... Main thing is,. they are CHEAP!

I think his page is K Racing on Facebook but if anyone wants more info just PM me and ill get you in contact!
