yeah I figured. I might try to remove the japanese frame completely see where that leaves me. Does anyone mount their small front plate very low down on the spoiler? literally an inch up from the lip.. ? attached two pics front and rear ..

I lost my brain and bought euro plates at the RTA. And then lost my brain and didn't try to mount them to till the next day. Of course the rear plate doesn't fit under any circumstances. $130 lost (as I didn't come back to rta SAME day). Now I have the regular ones. Is there a rear plate bracket solution for R34? the stock one doesn't work, in fact, the plate doesn't even fit flush there isn't quite enough space. I have a temporary solution involving sticking a metal plate to the back of the non metallic rego, then two ridiculously strong rare earth magnets that are thick enough to hold the plate out enough so there is more room (looking down from above, the space looks like \_x__x_/ where the X are the two magnets that the plate can be stuck to. Nevertheless it still doesn't look right as the japanese frame is too high.. Sorry, long post on a short problem.

On quiet roads at very sedate speeds, just tootle along I can hear a faint squeaking like a family of mice are in the wall. It only happens after the car warms up, perhaps 20 minutes after starting out and stays with me from then on. The squeaking is suspension related as it is provoked by any road irregularities.. On NPR Car Talk someone with this problem on a VW was told it was probably the bushings.. but since on a VW there is no lube points a new part would be required. So on an R34 GTR is it something some lube will fix? what else might it be? where best to take it to get it fixed? tia

Too late for an edit.. after much looking around .. what about this setup? alpine 9965 head unit (multi media player) alpine h701 signal processor (setup from hu) alpine ipod connector (control ipod from hu) mtx thunder subwoofer amp jl audio HD600/4 main amp (and of course, speakers to suit .. ) I kept seeing SQ recommendations for the pioneer P90 combo (hu + equalizer) but the equalizer is simply not available anymore just second hand rarely ... also the mcintosh head unit, or a denon (all these look like a million bucks). But the all those really lack features like bluetooth or mp3 or ipod .. so I'm hoping the 9965 has SQ with the icing as well.. PS: Do USA hd compatible head units work with the aussie stations?

I was going to get a double-din all in one unit .. probably the pioneer avic, but then I read on the avic411 forums that the sound quality is lacking ! Then I think what $2k+ might buy if I don't mind using a tomtom or garmin.. I had a pioneer double-din previously and really the sound quality wasn't so great considering the jl audio amp and speakers were top notch. So I blame these all-in-one head units. my question is therefore what is known to have top musical quality either as an ipod adapter or for playing dvds of FLAC, or with integrated HDD, and great FM ... CDs come last because I don't really drive around with a bunch of them.. I'm thinking of buying a soundstream amp, like the van gogh or picasso, and an MCX amp for a sub. Ideally it would be a single DIN then I could reserve the second slot for future expansion (eg a flip-out car-puter touch screen when that gets a bit more mature). Nothing garish either.. price not really an issue (as I'd be up for $2k+ for the original double-din idea anyway).. what brand should I be looking at?

Tip: when you go pay some shop for a blue slip, go get yourself a public weighbridge certificate FIRST and don't get asked to come back to the shop to drive your car to the nearest bridge, return it, then have to go back home again!! Mine weighed in at 1610 kg which I thought was a bit high as on paper they are 1540 kg ?? tank was only 1/4 full as well. Definitely doesn't have 70kg of japanese electronics in it ... anyway on price - the market for cars is fubar right now I don't think there is anything other than firesale prices for local vs2s and the exchange rate right now simple makes importing another one financial suicide -

the number is still "fluid" heh. today the bill was a $119 blue slip and tomorrow will be a $25 weigh station fee.. then the rta on wednesday - and they'll definitely enjoy extracting their fees. So I don't think I'll dare tot up the bill for a while. Mind you with the exchange rate the way it is - maybe i could sell it back to some bloke in japan and make a profit.. -
Anyone Know What This Japanese Electronic Thing Is?
rtune replied to rtune's topic in New South Wales
i guess, but I don't remember japanese phones having a round socket on them with two holes, normally they have rectangular connector blocks.. the chip inside is UTC MC34063A which is a dc/dc converter so it must be that.. oh well .. I was hoping it was an attachment for a japanese blow up doll, or something else interesting. -
I found this wired behind the dash, the blue socket was loose near the glovebox, it was hardwired to 12v but obviously normally is sold as a cig lighter device. It has "ING" and "creative presentation" written on it, a slider switch and a red light.. any ideas? the socket is two prong..

Mfd Screen Replacement - Do You Think This Will Work?
rtune replied to rtune's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Well, for $92 usd, I figured it was worth a try so I ordered one and when I get it, I'll rip off the added circuitry and find out very quickly if it does the job or not. Stands to reason they should be cheap. I imagine in 2000 they were hot stuff but now they're almost disposable at that resolution. -
I refer to the DOT stamp that tires on cars need to have - for blue-slippery ness and defect notices and so on ... Is the DOT stamp the US one? US Dept Of Transport? or is there some kind of australian special stamp? Do they look like the attached picture? Do Japanese tires (tires that were bought in Japan) typically have DOT stamps on them? (I'd expect yes if it is the US DOT and no if there is an aussie DOT).

Hey, How do you like the gold on black plate after having it for a while? did you consider any of the other black or white or gold choices? I'm looking at plates for mine, which is also black, and I'm not really 100% sure about that plate color combo..

The japanese page is here http://www.nismo.co.jp/shop/shop/omori/engine/r1/index.html but it isn't clear to me whether cams are on the parts list .. Other omori R1 conversions put in 272 degree cams, but maybe not the R34 conversion. -

thanks, they are 245/40/18 (potenza). I doubt the 40 vs 45 could make a 10% difference in speed though.. Guess I'll add this to a list of minor stuff to get done.. -
I'm looking at the yahoo.co.jp auctions and a toshiba screen goes for about 40k yen ($400 usd) eg http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f72604289 (to replace one in the MFD with broken pixels or whatever) but I found this http://store.earthlcd.com/SK-3021-SK3021 for $92 USD which is the same model screen, with some basic frame and power attached. So I'm wondering if I can't just buy the $92 unit and extract the screen, then I'll have my MFD replacement ? The PDF from toshiba makes it look identical: http://www.earthcomputer.com/public_html/d.../TFD58W30MM.pdf whatcha think?

i had more than enough aggro and unexpected expenses getting it over here, and way over 3 months of a wait, plus took the keys on the eve of a worldwide economic depression. But ok... from now on I'll just keep it hidden! -

well despite my handle it isn't a nur, it was a vs II which at 9000 kms got the R1 do over .. but yeah I get your point. I like the existing rims. I might get spacers though, thats an easy mod, yes? And ICE. You are right the pioneer doesn't put me in the ocean but it reboots constantly when it has a view of the sky, when in a garage it is happy, however .. -

Engine .. What should I do to this car? I'm thinking perhaps doing anything significant to the engine would diminish it? -
my car has a pioneer strada with pop-out screen, 30gb drive, sd card slot etc. if i get something local, do I just bin it? right now it reboots every minute when outside. I think it is confused about the hemisphere, will covering the square antenna with foil block the signal? (it works great underground!).

thanks for the answers so far. Any idea what this is? It appears to have been connected recently. If I was to reconnect it, where do i go hunting for the big 3 connector plastic block, to plug it back in again? -

cheers I wanted to take some more pictures, including of my questions.. but so far they are a) after an hour on the road the back of the car emits a quiet but annoying squeak.. squeak.. over bumps, eg the damn pacific highway north of coffs. doesn't seem to happen when cold. b) does anyone know a great mobile detailer guy, who loves black, in sydney? c) Should the fuse box in the engine bay have a cover? d) does every gtr have little dash rattles on bumpy highways? I've got a couple but won't go hunting for them if thats just the way things tend to be? like, coming from behind the dash, or air vents there are these little scratchy ticky sounds over bumps. My other car is a golf and its solid and tight, so maybe I'm expecting too much of a vintage car. e) the biggie The gear stick has what I imagine was very shiny looking aluminium with the GTR logo but it is all tarnished. If this is a stock gtr gear stick, is there a stock cleaning product people use on it? f) when I open the door(s) they don't hold open they just swing as wide as you like and on a camber will shut again. The door arm looks like it has outdents on it, which i can just feel, is that something that can be tightened up or is it just the way it is? g) there is a clutch rattle in neutral that goes away when I put my foot in the clutch. Do coppermix twins rattle? I remember reading they don't. Is it the flywheel perhaps? it isn't enough for passers by to think there is a problem but it is there. h) it idles at 1200 indicated, is that about right? very smooth but seems high. i) the speedo reads 10% over. I'd rather it read right, is that tweakable? specs, well, I'll take it somewhere to check it out see what it does on pulp. it has a nismo ecu, n1 block and all the nismo r parts... an R1 conversion with the omori plate in the bay (nismo still have the goodies list up somewhere). S tune suspension and the weldina exhaust which has a lovely popping on the overrun.. -
2002 and 16,000 kms on the odo. going to be a bugger to wash... I'll post some more pictures later.. I enjoy the engine bay, it has red crinkle coat on the cams and the inlet manifold.. Got some minor questions as well.
