when i was about 16,i was pulling out the engine from my old wrecked datto 1200 sedan (to put into my 1600 shell) over the pit in my parents garage.was down the pit loosening things and basically cutting the front rails out the car with an angle grinder to get the engine out(chassis was farked anyway) used the grinder while in the pit for about 10minutes,got out for a break and fresh air, started up the grinder again(this time i was above the pit) and KABOOM!sparks ignited the oily sand in the bottom of pit and instantly ingulfed the car.i managed to lean in the window of the car and drop the handbrake and push the car back about a metre so that the tank wasnt directly over the flames.got out of the shed with thick black smoke billowing out the door, mum rang the fire brigade while the next door neighbour hosed down the shed roof from their backyard over the fence.got taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and i reckon by the time i got home from the hospital, the fire brigade was done and my olds had a cement mixer back up into the shed and filled in the pit with concrete
can laugh about it now,was a close shave, but definately wasnt funny at the time.safety first these days in my shed...
