Thanks for the opinions guys, Spoke to the wreckers today and got the real story. Apparently, this guy was searching for months in order to find a mint R33 GTR (Bit of a car collector), the purpose was for investment so he didn't bother with compliance, rego or insurance as it would sit in his garage and not be used. So whilst interstate for work, his recently dissowned son decided he'd go for a fang in daddy's godzilla. Well, you know the rest, I cried and cried. Well I felt a little sad.
-
Hope one of you guys can help me out with this, I've just been offered a Gearbox from a 96 GTR with 14k on the clock, the car was immaculate and the owner loaned it to his son who proceeded to drive it into a gutter and managed to write it off. Anyhow, they want $1000 for it, all I could do was run it through the gate but it feels OK and the ks are low. Anyone know what to expect to pay for a low k 33 GTR box? Thanks

Fair comment sleighty, I also am sceptical when viewing certain footage, but truth is, there are very few of us fortunate enough to be able to track test the top three supercars on our buying list and therefore need to look to advice such as magazines, videos or one of the lucky few. I believe all opinions are biased to some degree as all are subjective. Some people handle certain drive and handling characteristics better than others, and some find their abilities ruin the driving experience in turn reducing the overall score. But lets face it, those saying Ferraris are faster than Porsches or vice-versa and still basing their argument on another mans biased and subjective opinion. Put a V8 supercar driver in a tarmac spec STi and see if he doesn't think he's V8 would be better over the same piece of road, not the car, just different skills influencing a different opinion. Just for the record, in the race was Ferrari, Porsche, GTR and three other top Jap cars, the Ferrari won, GTR second followed closely by the 911, and the rest of the Japanese products some 3 secs off the pace.
-
Have to disagree with some of you guys, i have a number of motoring videos in which unbiased racing drivers are put randomly into varying cars of similar calibre, and the GTR performs equally well with the Porsche turbo on every occasion. One driver even commented on why the 911 could not lose the Nissan on the back straight whilst outputing significantly more power. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for anything on the road which is pure of purpose and designed with a focus, but I think you'll find the GTRs are more of a challenge to 911 Turbos than you think. But..............Love 'em all. And i agree, street racing is stupid. But I've done it, and anyone on here who loves their car and says they haven't, however small, is a dirty liar......well they might not be dirty.

Just for some unbiased info, I've a number of the Japanese Vids Best Motoring and they've run the GT-T against the RX7 and the as much as I love the GT-T, it didn't stand a chance, started at the front of the grid and after 5 laps was at the rear. It was against some serious cars though, RX7, NSX, Lancer GSR, WRX STi. They also ran the RX7 against the GTRs R33 and R34 and in that particular race, they were all very even. All cars were dead stock. TT RX7 is GTR pace, well the Jap S spec anyway.

Well I'm not one to run on the road, but on Sunday after spectating at a Porsche car club meet at Sandown, I encountered a couple of guys in a worked 911 Carrera (I'd been inspecting it during the day) following me close behind doing the tyre warming swerves and generally giving me the hurry up. Anyway, ran with them on Princess Hwy and got 3 cars by 190. They stopped beside me again at the next set and were completely silent, wouldn't even give me a glance. Porsche eater!!

Anyone want a GTR key for their Skyline?
Gumby replied to KamikazeR33's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Sorry Kamikaze, didn't realise I didn't even put the part number. If anyone is still interested, Evo R is the only place I've seen the Nismo key, don't know the part number but there is only one. It looks exactly like the GTR key but has NISMO on it instead. They want around $120.00!!!! -
Sorry forgot Shik, got the key from FerntreeGully Nissan, but they'll all be able to get them.

For those wondering about the alpha, I don't know what they're worth as the unit was already installed in the car when I bought it. I believe they are available from 'In Car Options' in Melbourne, search the web and it should list some other dealers. Basically, the pager uses the same transmission signal as the alarm notification, that is, it only communicates on its own discrete RF frequency. There is a little module stuck on the inside of the windscreen which reads "tap to page", and tapping the spot triggers my handheld which alerts me and says "CALL!" So no, I don't actually pay anything. Don't know a great deal about the unit as a user manual was not supplied. I do know it does some of the following. As well as all the normal functions of a remote alarm: - Alerts transmitter of alarm trigger up to around a km - Automatically starts engine on programmed time. - Provides Cabin Temp from transmitter - Remote engine start (The idea of the above two is that should you check remotely that the cabin temp is too cold, you can remote start the engine and the CC warms the cabin to desired temp. - Two stage shock alert back to handunit - Proximity disarm (it actually senses the remote is within proximity say 2 metres and auto unlocks the doors without having to push the button) - Also doubles as a turbo timer which bases the run on time on measured oil temp and revs. When I've been taking it easy, it doesn't run on, when I've been thrashing, it does. - Remote engine off, ie. if the unit runs the unit on and I've removed the key and am no longer in the car, the Engine button can be used to remotely stop engine and arm. - Does quite a few other things which I have yet to use Don't know how good it is as a deterent, but it looks serious with the driver paging module under the screen and long range receiver device under the visor. No ones attemped to break in as yet. (TWood)

I think the key profile for a GTS-T is the same, you can actually buy the same key with Nismo on it instead of GTR. But don't think you'll get it through Nissan. Evo R has the Nismo version on display.
-
Yeah, bit bigger than I would have chosen, but it was already in the car so....... It's a Boomerang Alpha something, it's a two way tranceiver meaning you not only send a lock/unlock command to the car, but should someone breach the security, it will actually page you by beeping and vibrating as long as the car is within a 1.2 km range. Mine seems to be more like 150m though.

Just had to post something on this. Couple of weeks ago, I visited Evo R in search of a GTR ignit key, I know it's just a key, but I wanted one. So turned out it would cost $120 and take three weeks coming from Japan. So I picked myself up off the floor and left. I was recently back as Evo R to find that it now costs $140 with the same wait. Stood up again and walked out. So I called Nissan who said that they could get one, it was $41 something and was silver in colour. Figured it couldn't be too bad so said to get me one. Came in the next working day and picked it up today. IT"S THE SAME KEY!!!! The one Evo was trying to flog for $140.00!!! So now I'm so pleased with myself, and if any fellow GTR owners are interested, $41.39 through Nissan. Photo attached. I know, it's just a key. But I like it.

I've had the GTR for around 8 months now bought as a company vehicle, meaning not only do I drive it daily to and from work, but I also drive it to site (normally in the city, sometimes as far as Warrnambool), and I couldn't imagine owning anything else. The only problem I've had with it is getting in and out of city car parks as the car has had suspension work and sits a little lower. Great car around the burbs and the CBD, easy to drive and fun even around there. Best of all, come weekend, jump in and blast some windy country road and you'll be amazed at how capable it is in any situation. Convinced??

That blue R34 GTR cruising the North Shore Streets
Gumby replied to Blitz's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Gee, I've got some great videos here you guys would absolutely love! They are from the Japanese Best Motoring series, and there is one which pits both Jap cars and Euros against each other for 6 hot laps around the Tsukuba race track japan. Line up includes Ferrari F355, Porsche 911 Turbo, Nissan GTR, Honda NSX Type R, RX7, Supra can't remember the others. GTO I think. Great to see the cars driven flat out side by side. Results: F355 by a nose, GTR, Porsche Turbo few car lengths behind, then a long gap to the rest of the Japanese cars. Great to see the Sky up there with some of the best in the world. Take a bow. -
I thought it strange also, maybe it had a plate which came off with a close encounter with a speedhump. The pipe is cat back only with a single muffler after the cat and the resonator you can see. or is it the other way around? Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Thanks again, $9.95 from Nissan, should've just gone there in the first place. You wouldn't believe this, actually you will, removed old filter and failed to attempt to wipe the surface clean (it's hard enough getting my hands down there), so proceeded to apply film to newie and screw it down. Seemed to screw on softly but not too bad, so filled the case and started the engine to fill the filter. Didn't get oil pressure! Stopped the engine and looked under the car to find all my new oil all over the garage floor. Turns out the seal from the old filter stayed on the motor hence causing a major oil leak with pressure. How dumb was that!! Don't say it. I know. Anyway, done.

I'm sure one of you many enthusiasts will be able to help me out here. My insurance company has requested some details on the mods to my car in particular the manufacturer of the exhaust system. I've been under the car and can't find anything. I bought it this way and have included a photo (not a very good one). If anyone has any idea what this thing may be, please let me know so I can throw a name at them. Thanks.

Excellent! Thanks guys, new oil this weekend.
-
Thanks, I was going to speak to Nissan as a last resort as the gen. Niss parts seem so overpriced for what is essentially the same thing. I'll keep hunting.
-
Guys, Sounds like a stupidly simple question, but people can't tell me. Anyone know where I can get information on the type of oil filter ( ie. part no.) for an RB26DETT as I'm aiming at this weekend to perform an oil change. I went to Evolution R and they said it would be listed as the car actually came to Australia in '90. Checked the catalogues and they are not listed. Need Help, noone seems to know. Thanks.

Good to see you looking at a Skyline for your next car. I bought an R33 GTR 4 months ago having been through the same dillema you're currently faced with. The R34 GT-T was considered as the price was similar, actually slightly less, after a friend came to me saying that the GT-T was super fast with 207KW. So it was time to try them both, and honestly, though both rated at the same output, and the GT-T (I'm assuming) being lighter than the GTR, the GTR still felt the stronger in a straight line. I don't know how the torque figures compare but the GTR was more drivable producing good strong power very evenly throughout the rev range. But it was not this which sold me the GTR, drive a GTR over a twisty bit of back road, and the AWD system makes it incredibly quick out of tight corners. The back will still slide under power but it doesn't step out, it simply drifts smoothly, predictably. It does the same in the wet, you can slide the rear on demand but you keep the foot in, and it just gets better. The GT-T, also a worderfull car, really struggled with traction and I could only imagine how much of a handfull it would be in the wet, great fun though. GT-T felt like a fast road car, GTR felt amazing, steering was right, brakes strong, seats firm and secure. And I love the R33s, they just look right. The GTR accellerates in the wet as it does in the dry, in fact, going very hard in first on very slippery roads has all fours breaking traction, but you're still accellerating very hard, so you'd almost miss it. I drive the car every day to work, I drive the car for work, normally fighting the CBD traffic during working hours looking for parking, and love it all the time. Easy to drive, easy to park, and a great drive on the weekends. I've not had trouble with the police (touch wood), in fact, I've hardly been noticed by them at all. When I see them, I shift early and look inconspicuous. No probs. If you've done your homework (insurance, running costs etc), and the GTR still looks good, I'd definately go the 'R', true supercar in a practical body. Whichever way you go, you got the Skyline right. BTW, my sis has a 206 Gti, fantastic handling, throw it in and hang on.

Skylines, the best cars in the world!!
Gumby replied to Gumby's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Thanks YLWGTR, just some honest opinions. A fang sounds like a great idea. Any fav. routes around the area? Where abouts are you? We'll get together and go hunting sports bikes. Love a demanding piece of road, and driving it in a Skyline is the way to enjoy it! -
Skylines, the best cars in the world!!
Gumby replied to Gumby's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Well you just post a little thread 'bout how you enjoy your car and WHAM!! Everyones arguing about which car is better and which car is not. So here's mine. Evo was a consideration but remembering I use this as a work car, and I therefore have to drive it daily, there was one major issue for me. Reliable power. The EVOs as well as the STis use a 'highly tuned' 2Litre to make their claimed max power, highly tuned 'cause they're of relatively small physical capacity and are 4 Cyl. The GTR, whilst probably making the same 'claimed' power and weighing more than either of the two aforementioned cars, gets its motivation from a 'detuned' 2.6 L six cyl. keeping it from making a mess of the Jap power cap. This suggests to me the GTR is feeling alot less stressed doing what it's doing in comparison. The Mits and Subie also felt very light wieght and almost flimsy (though I'm sure they're not), the Sky felt solid and usable. The Mist and STi might take an R33 in a straight line, and so they should considering the wieght advantage they have over the 1.6 tonne Sky. But the owning experience is the whole driving experience, and I've a real fettish for brilliant cornering attitude. So handling, well although I didn't drive the EVO 6 as this was $25K more than I wanted to spend, the EVO 5 felt more like a front wheel drive with its less sharp turn in and tendancy to understeer mid corner, the GTR felt very different, more like a brilliantly sorted rear wheel drive, but had 'all paw' traction on exit. Turn in is sharp, and power oversteer is available on demand. Couldn't do this in my friends WRX. M3, fantastic car, just struggled to get power through the rears alone. So AWD it had to be. So there you go, all wonderfull cars for different reasons. None really better than the other, just suit different requirements and driving desires. Diplomatic enough for everyone?? Munro... Don't see many 34 GTRs around Melb but there are a few. GT-Ts and GT-25Ts are becoming more common though, some very tidy examples getting around here. But don't see many GTRs of either R32 or R33 build either. Heaps of BMW compacts though...........Pfftt......!! Bozz....Wandin, Isn't that where that lady swears there is a Tassie Tiger living and breeding?? No, never lived that far out, played badminton out there at the stadium a couple of times, but no, although spotting a Tassie Tiger might make it interesting. Have to make some regular visits. -

Thanks NDR! You're absolutely right. For what I spent, I could have bought a number of cars, and yes some of them would have been new, some of the cars I was considering were the Renault Sport Clio and the 200SX. The WRX I didn't like nor did I the Integra R. The day I first drove the R, I wanted nothing else. Everything felt sloppy next to this. And being 4 years old, it's already passed its max rate of depreciation. What else compares??????????????? If it's out there, I couldn't find it. Cheers Buddy. -

Man......you got it!! Mine is pretty stock apart from exhaust, intake and suspension, so I found it amazing that I was able to keep up with bikes out of corners. It was 'cos the AWD allowed me to get the power on so early exiting corners. My 33 has APEX coil overs which like you described , feel VERY bumpy around the majoriy of streets here in Victoria, but once squatting hard mid corner, are absolutely flawless. Just can't upset the car mid corner. Is your 33 a V? When I was looking, I tried both on a nice piece of road and could not feel the difference, both are sensational I'm sure, just happened that the best example I found was non V. And as I couldn't really tell............ What are your impressions on this? Have you tried V and Non V of the same model?
