Need your public support, plz read!!
dojobi replied to YBSLO4's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Sounds great. As everyone else has said, Public Liability Insurance is your main hurdle. I just had the thought too - what happens if a bunch of pissed bogans turn up for some burnouts and smash a few cars? Who would cover that? Are you going to be able to breath test everyone who turns up? This would be a private burnout area, right? So the drinking and driving laws wouldn't apply (??) I've also got the feeling that the cops would set up a defect station outside the place though -
It could go hard if you put an RB25DET head on it Seriously, they actually go pretty well with the SOHC head. They feel quite responsive around town and are fairly good on fuel consumption. Then again, my experience with one was back in the early 90s, so it was still newish. Not too sure how well they have held up over the years.
-
BTW even though they've changed the lights imo, it is still a real Skyline, and I'd kill to have one. I'd just swap a few VQ30DET parts into it (like the turbo) .
-
They also come with the VQ35DE engine, so it's not all bad. The Z has the same engine and there's a few turbo kits planned. The VQ30DET is a very close relative anyway, so I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to turbo one. Also, on the taillights issue, here is a pic of them when the brake pedal is pressed (I think). I think the outer round one is just a blinker. ie the days of the 4 round lights as taillights/brake lights are gone I'm sure someone could rig up a nice replacement set though - maybe something like the new Integra (skyline copy ). Since I'm over here in the US, I'll try and check out an Infiniti G35 to see how the lights work. I really wish they brought this car out in Aus.

Duncan, This page here has all the specs of any Skyline you'll ever want. Even some you (well I) probably didn't even know existed. It tells you all the years certain models were made too. It even updates the weights for all the little variations in the years (e.g. In 93 a series 1 GTS25t weighed 1360kg, but in 95 the series 1 was up to 1370kg) http://imports.motortraders.net/imports/se...n&model=Skyline

93RPS13, I'm an Aussie living in Boston. My Skyline is at home collecting dust. If I could have brought it over I would have, but it's damn near impossible to get anything into this country. I have to say the thought of a RB30DETT sounds pretty damn cool. I'd do that to my car if I had the cash. I've seen some pics of an RB26DETT in a 180SX body and the bonnet couldn't close. I'd say you'll have some slight issues with the RB30, but nothing that can't be worked around. It will have to be the fastest S13 in MA once you're done though. Actually, I haven't seen any decent cars around here. What's the deal with the car scene over here? Who's this X-Crew you mentioned? I'm missing my car so I'd like to see what the local cars are like. I'm in Brookline btw. Cheers, Michael

Turbine AR, trim, cams and airflow- what does it all mean?
dojobi replied to Steve's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Don't you hate it when you spend a fair bit of time writing up a post and noone answers it? Anyway, I'm interested in hearing some responses to this thread, so here's a free bump. Sorry, I can't help you out. -
93RPS13, You're not located in Boston are you?
-
meggala, what do you have to do to the block to strengthen it? The idea of an RB30 bottom end on a RB26 head really appeals to me, so this has made me a little concerned. Have you got any idea what are the VL boys doing to protect their engines when they pull off those 400 - 500rwkw numbers? Cheers, Michael

Sounds like it would be pretty good then. I might have to modify my box to take a GTR inlet too. Thanks for the tip.
-
I didn't realise there was aftermarket piping there. Guess I'm going blind in my old age . If I'd known that the GTR snorkel fitted with a bit of work I would have gone that way for sure. Oh well, it's a bit late now though. Besides, I love the sound of my pod .
-
51jay, some people get pods because they have FMIC piping that would go right where the snorkel is. That's the reason I got one. Mine's boxed up though with the UAS kit, so it wouldn't be robbing me of any power. Now that I've got a pod I could never go back. The sound is half the fun of driving now (I can't believe I actually hated it at first)

BAO2ME, 1390kg is the series 2 weight. The series 1 is even lighter at 1360kg. Now about the best % increase, predator666, I'd say the S15 would be your best $4000 upgrade - mainly because it seems to respond to mods as well as the RB25, but the body is lighter.

I always find it weird that people feel the R33 GTS25t is a whale (I realise what you're saying above dAVE, cos it is a whale to the S15, I'm just about to get a little off topic). I've only been in a couple of R32s, but the 2.0L engine just doesn't put out enough to lug it around. The 2.5L is a sweet engine and the R33 is only 40kg more than the R32. That does not qualify it for whale status if you ask me. Or is it called a whale because of the shape? So why do people call the 33 a whale when comparing it to the 32. Sorry for the off-topicness.

I removed my ashtray and put the wires through the hole. The SAFC was then stuck to the plastic there. It's quite neat.

Check out this fine Skyline!!!!

Nicest R32 I've seen ever. I've got a friend in Gothenburg (sp?), do you live anywhere near there? -
Duncan, that might not be the only thing that will be gone by morning.
-
Just a thought, but are you sure you've got your variable cam timing connected? I left mine disconnected once and with all my mods I could only get 137rwkw. Once reconnected it made 177rwkw. Basically it totally destroyed my top end and made the car feel slow when I pushed it (I never tested my 0-100), but driving around normally on the street it didn't feel too bad (only slightly slow feeling).
-
Hmm, guess it must have been a bit of a stupid question then... EDIT: I just found out the cylinder size of each engine is quite different. So I guess it's not a goer then. VQ30 - 93.0 x 73.3 VQ35 - 95.5 x 81.4
-
Then again, I could either get a 350Z ($$) or wait a bit until the V35 coupes are available (too $$ for me too) and just put the 30DET head on the standard 35 block. That would mean a lot less work than a whole engine conversion. What sort of turbo packages are available for the 350Z now? It's got the same engine, so I might be able to look at one of those. The reason I thought of just using the 30DET head was for cost, as it would be a lot cheaper than custom parts I thought.
-
At least you didn't buy your car when the yen was at around 60 like me It is good to see it up that high though.

Hi Guys, This isn't really Skyline related, but I've had this idea in my head for a while, so wanted to ask it. I was going to ask it at Performance Forums in their Engine Conversions section, but they won't let me join because my Yahoo email (which I pay for, and is my only email), is not allowed. I thought of this after reading the RB30DET thread. Basically, what I'd like to do is buy a VQ30DET engine and a VQ35DE engine and put the 30DET head on the 35 block - in the same fashion as the RB25/30 hybrid. Is this possible and has anyone done this? I haven't got the bore and stroke specs of either, but I'd assume the 35 just had a longer stroke. Is this correct? All the other bits like the rods and stuff should be able to come straight off the 35 shouldn't they? Having said all this, would it just be easier to buy the VQ35DE and turbo it using custom parts. The gearbox, I'm not sure on, but I would assume that the one they use on the VQ35DE would be fairly strong. Also, if what I've just written is absolute shit, please don't be too hard on me as my knowledge of engines doesn't really extend into the internals. I know bolt ons only really Please tell me if it's possible though. Anyway, at the moment, it's just an idea, but it's something I'd like to do in the future. I may just buy a VQ30DET from a Y33 or something and put that in the donor car (undecided at the moment, but I'm thinking an R34 GT, and the 2.0L engine can go into some shitbox). Cheers, Michael

Have you got any aftermarket management? if not, you'll want to get some (like a SAFC) to lean out your a/f mixtures as the stock computer really messes with your power curve when the boost is turned up a bit above stock. Put your car on a dyno to see. I know mine was like that, and so are half the skylines on here.

My car came with one of those. It wasn't that brand, but the same thing. I took it off and noticed absolutely no difference. In fact it probably improved performance by removing it as it weighed about 0.5kg

There's so many ways to make money, so I say just get the car now. The house can come later (probably bad financial advice, but a nice car is worth it). Anyway, my alternate suggestion is that you wait a bit and get a Toyota Chaser. And Strich9ine - I too had a fair amount of money saved by the time I was 19 and also only spent bugger all each week. I know you might find it a bit hard to believe, but Ease up on him a bit. It's quite possible.
