  1. Maybe to insure the property that they might crash into? Its easy to buy another car for yourself in the event of a crash, but its more towards the car you crash into especially if the other person's car is a prestige car and your at fault. On the insurance note, I have just successfully obtained another full comp.insurance through JustCars again and they are still really good with annual premium The excess is where it still hurts the most tho if an accident/theft occurs, ah well..
  2. how many people is rocking up to the yatala bp meet?
  3. Hrmm.. perhaps you should google what a master boot record (MBR) is to understand what it is and its purpose/function. As it varies between operation systems and would differ between operation systems. I first learn it based on information I gather while learning different type of viruses (yes I was curious...). Modr33s2, formating does not put in a new MBR so any information on it is still there. NTFS from cd (I am assuming you meant re-install from cd) , I am not sure if it would even plaster in a new MBR I wouldn't think it would. The install process would most likely would read the existing MBR then append or modify it accordingly. Slide.. I'm not sure your cert IV course would cover it. The BIT I did at Griffith 5 years ago certainly didnt cover it in detail. One of the subject only cover as far as what it is in a generic term, which is ok to start with I guess. Sorry.. think I'll shuddarp in this thread now. I would explain more if you guys are interested, just dont want to come across as a know it all which I ain't. Still am learn new things everyday.
  4. If I'm there for fuel I would take the keys with me and I would wait till the car has stop running then fill up. The alarm has passive immobolisers, so even if someone jumps in my car they wont get far unless they can by pass the immobolisers and start the car in a few seconds. If I'm there for something else (depending on how long), I would normally leave the car running with the turbo timer and duck into the servo. I always make sure that the turbo timers I have in the car is always hooked up to the handbrake. Someone jump in tries to drive the car drops the handbrake, the car stops and immoboliser kicks in. Still take them time to by pass. Never left the keys in the ignition tho, thats just asking for it then again I'm paranoid to a degree.. As to the guy that did the club lock, he have had a situation before which forces him to take such action to feel that he is looking after the car. Everyone has different views on proctecting your car I guess..
  5. A format would wipe most nasties, but it is not guaranteed a fresh start. The cleanest method, short of a low level format is to boot from a floppy do an fdisk of the MBR then perform the format with unconditional option. Do they even teach what a MBR is in MCP? A piece of paper does not automatically mean you know the product inside and out. I dont think the teacher would bullshit a class, but I would dare say not a single teacher is able to pass on all his/her knowledge to everyone they teach.
  6. Agree with what Merlin has mentioned... modr33s2, As to your friend's system keeps shutting down after going online has he checked his event logs for any weird rpc errors? What I am referring to is blaster worm or a variant of it. You friend's problem sounded very must the syntoms of a blaster worm/variant. Firewall or IDS would not help in anyway at all as the worm is attacking your friend machine's rpc service locally. Nothing is impossible these days when it comes to security, regardless of how strong of an encryption is used. As encrytion is being cracked everyday it is the reason why there is a constant drive in developing stronger encrytion. The safest system is one that is physically secure ( in a bomb shelter or something) with nothing but a keyboard, mouse, monitor and the box connected. For a normal computer user online, a firewall and anti virus software is just the basics that everyone should have. You would be silly not to at least have these two if your on the internet and of course you have to ensure that they are setup appropriately at the start and also is constantly updated. The comment of linux is more secure than windows xp or the other way around is rubbish. How secure the machine is depends on how much time the person using the machine take initially to setup and perform the daily task of checking the system. Linux used to be by default more secure as one of its versions was the first to integrate firewall install and easy setup as part of its install. XP did not offer integrated firewall until service pack 2 was released and also at the same time Windows software is more globally used and hence is more targetted for attack. Just thought I'd add in my 2c worth.
  7. indeed very amusing....

Wasnt going to go either but sorta got dragged there in a mate's car. Think if I do go next year, I'll be driving a vehicle there even just for the hot laps ? ..

  18. Hrmm.. is a leopard or a 180sx allowed to be in attendance? Have an interest in R34s......

  20. anyone know where to get an apexi filter with adapter cheap? autobarn's price is shockin..... Sorry if I'm hijackin your post...
  21. Pretty sure the BOV has to be plumb'ed back and not vent to the atmo directly. As to the noise as long as its not loud, it doesnt attract attention which = less chance of being pulled over? Not sure on the brake and strut braces.. the pod filter should be ok.. as long as it is secure (tho if the blues really want to be a bitch, I heard they can still book you). Exhaust.. noise level and "smoke" factor from memory... If you want to be doubly sure that the mods is fine.. take it to a good DOT inspection officer or call them up and ask them. Get a QLD DOT mod book and read it too.. very educational incase the blues want to shaft you for something that is legal..... One last advise.. DO NOT post all your mods on any forums... I'm sure there are other people that disagree with this.. As someone I met a while back... the car is "stock as a rock"
  22. Its not the boot line man... its within the body of the car, you can easily get it cleared from a DOT inspection officer that is not too freggin lazy. IE. take it to zilmere DOT, the inspection officer there is very good. Not sure how far that is for you to travel tho..... Assuming if that is the only reason why the officer defected you. Also keep a copy of the DOT mod book in your car for future pull overs. I will be doing the same once my 180 is on the road. I'm with you on the last statement tho.. its stupid how anyone with a slight modified legal mod(s) have to spend time fart ass around to prove that it is actually legal.
