P4 3.8ghz - $200usd delivered, around $230aud

just recently been overclocking via bios my 3.4ghz lga75 chip to 3.57 and she's been sweet (benchmarking), and at 3.57ghz my Battlefield2 game ran the best it ever had in the past 2 yrs. Had 3:1 kdr for roundafter round after round. No jerkiness on the fps. only did the overclock last thursday, reset back to stnd now tho.

So, Ive been looking for a lga775 P4 3.8ghz 2m cache, model sl8py

found it on ebay, great price.

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sspec=sl8py

happy dance. happy dance. hope now the 2 x 7800GTX MSI cards, 256mb ram each, work real sweet in SLi mode.

so, anyone want a 3.4ghz lga775 chip for $50? been very faithful

ill buy you CPU off you even though i want C2D or Q6600

i had a 650 core myself and clocked it to 4ghz on air

i dont know if i can afford it this week as i have to get a double din cradle and im in the group buy for a 300kph speedo dials

lets talk though

not a problem.

wait a week or so? see how you feel about it then? cant let it go just yet, not until I receive the 3.8 chip.

should be 1-2 weeks I guess, but will let you know.

lol you cant let it go yet but advertise it on ebay  hmmm me suspects painkillers :):fakenopic:

lol, nah not in a few weeks now.

being (head)strong

my new 3.8 chip is being sent via EMS right now, left last night... ebay for my curent 3.4 chip is a 10 period, so it all should work out ! lol

Ok, need some help / advice from the resident techies, please

CMV 19inch monitor

Logitech G15 keyboard

Logitceh G5 mouse

Windows XP Pro

Built it up slowly, like a car I suppose, over the past cple of years.

OK, here is the deal. I got the 2nd MSI 7800GTX 256mb video card off ebay recently, tested it, works as good as my original which is in great condition. Set it all up, bam, fried my original 430w power, so I got the 650w sli power supply.

Been running sli mode with every game of Battlefield 2, but the PC sometimes crashes to desktop, or it freezes totally requiring a restart, or it'll suddenly lag up (once naded or artied) and the ground will turn to snow, the plants will turn polar white, and I'll move at 1 frame per second.

Ive tried numerous nvidia drivers, some modified and tweaked, some real old, some new, all the same IMO. SLi is giving me extraordinary feautures with architecture etc, even when everything in the Control Panel is turned off (bar sli x16 mode) and bf2 settings all on low to medium.

When the control panel settings are on full blast, the 2 cards offer huge performance....... awesome. But either or, it'll randomly freeze or lag up or shut down the pc, no matter what the settings or the rendering mode Im using. very random, can happen twice in a night, or not at all for 2 weeks.

Im lost. Tried all I can. Is it perhaps the power supply? I think its a 600w base supply to a max of 650w on overrun, so to speak. Could it be a heat issue? These cards pump out a huge amount of heat - perhaps install a fan that draws in outside air to blow all over the 2 cards? Any suggestions? Ive got the Soprano case so there are fans-a-plenty already installed.

Im thinking of selling them both (450 delivered, currently sinffing out on ebay whether someone wants them) and getting a 2900XT instead. But Id rather not, these 2 beauties when stable are unreal. Any suggestions? Oh, Ive bought a new Intel 670 3.8ghz chip and sold my Intel 650 3.4 chip, awaiting delivery. Can also sell the 3 gig 533mhz ram for 2gig 667 ram I suppose.

Help !!! Im sick of the random freezing. Its not often, but enough to be totally unpredictable. What could be causing this? My first venture with SLI and I love the graphical nature of the 2 cards. Even when not on full steam.

aarrrggghhhhhh

tangles. are you seeing artifacts and texture corruption on the screen.

Both are a sideaffect of overclocking but more often than not HEAT.

The soprano case while it does have a few fans and looks nice, it does not cool down your pc too well, I had the Tsunami case which is like the soprano but all aluminum, and I thought that the side casefan was positioned VERY POORLY for my 7950GX2 1gb card which is 2 7900's sandwhiched together on a single PCI slot.

I had some similar issues with that case, if i played for more than an hour i would experience random crashed, BSODs, and random resets. very annoying.

I took the side fan off and pointed a fan on a stand into it and it was more stable but still it wasnt quite a long-term soution..

In the end, I bought one of these and it fixed all my issues.:

344881269_b48737e1ef_o.jpg

And its the most free flowing and best case I have ever purchased.

I think its rated as the case that pretty much is the pinnacle of air cooling atm, no other pushed as much air as this.

its ~200dollars tho. so there might be other things you can try to see what the problem may be first.

cheers for the thoughts

nah no artifacts or evidence of the 2nd card being previously overclocked and damaged.

I know my original card is as good as new. definately no architecture corruptions. beautiful crisp and precise video output, the game is a pleasure to play (all I do on the pc is listen to music, search, and play BF2 in clan wars and pub servers)

hhmmm, might drill out a hole in the clear case under the current central fan (pushing air out), to push air in towards the 2 cards which sit right down low. I have a 90mm fan but only a 60mm drill hole bit, lol. was worried about the new power supply, I dont want to change that as I think it should suffice. same thoughts with the current ram sticks.

make sure ur ram is matched. that can also cause numerous problems. (ie same voltage, latencies, settings, even if u have to over clock them make sure they are all stable).

Also, in the 6800 days I had issues with my 3d card so I updated its firmware and solved some issues, although this is risky I'd look into that also.

how new is the ram??

i'd say that is your problem, and if you read the motherboard manual, it'll probably say you can only run 1, 2 or 4 sticks of ram! with all current CPUs/computers you wuold be CRAZY to run 3 sticks, you want dual channel ram in all of your systems regardless - and to anyone else running 3 sticks (or 1) in a dual ram setup, stop doing it your almost halfing your systems performance!!!

also, some games just dont like SLI, and will give you errors when they run in sli (i know wow had massive problems with it)

you may have fried the grapics cards when the power supply blew up, or the 650 may not have enough grunt to actually run the cards and hence the graphical errors

hope this helps

:(

cheers, yeah was running 4 x 1gig sticks, 2 sets of matched ram. found tho that the 4th stick sat against power supply lines, wasnt happy with that so I took it out. That one is being sold with my old mobo on ebay for $100 (current bid), just put up the other 3rd stick on ebay for $35. These 2 sticks were approx 2yrs old. Will keep current 3month old 2 x 1gig matched ram @ 533mhz sticks. But will also do Cubes mentioned memtests on them.

Im thinking the power supply is 650w rated up to 700w, actually. yes might be the issue, but wont bloody replace that, rather sell both cards and 'upgrade' again for minimal cost to a 2900xt ($500). Heat. too hot in the box, for sure...... gggrr so hard to work out what could be the definate answer. I dont believe either cards were fried when the power fried itself. They work fine as stand-alone.

cheers for the advice.... at me wits end. done so many driver updates, tried heaps of different graphical settings. but yeah, tonight, drill new fan hole and install extra fan, take out extra ram stick, do tests.

any psu up to the 800w tagan is still cool and quiet, over the 800w tagan and your starting to increase the noise/heat of the system

i'd put my money on ram being the problem, either not liking the 3 sticks, or incorrect bios setup for the ram you are running (note: somtimes running spd settings is a lot worse than setting them up at correct timings)

if the cards are running fine individually, then the only thing will be the ram causing the problem (and a small chance its the motherboard)

    • Well, after the full circus this week (new gearbag, 14 psi actuator on, injectors and AFM upgraded, and.....turbo repair) the diagnosis on the wastegate is in. It was broken. It was broken in a really strange way. The weld that holds the lever arm onto the wastegate flapper shaft broke. Broke completely, but broke in such a way that it could go back together in the "correct" position, or it could rearrange itself somewhere else along the fracture plane and sit with the flapper not parallel to the lever. So, who knows how and when exactly what happened? No-one will ever know. Was it broken like this the first time it spat the circlip and wedged itself deep into the dump? Or was it only broken when I tried to pry it back into place? (I didn't try that hard, but who knows?). Or did it break first? Or did it break between the first and second event of wierdness? Meh. It doesn't matter now. It is welded back together. And it is now held closed by a 14 psi actuator, so...the car has been tuned with the supporting mods (and the order of operations there is that the supporting mods and dyno needed to be able to be done first before adding boost, because it was pinging on <<14 psi with the new turbo with only a 6 psi actuator). And then tuned up a bit, and with the boost controller turned off throughout that process. So it was only running WG pressure and so only hit about 15-16 psi. The turbo is still ever so slightly lazier than might be preferred - like it is still a bit on the big side for the engine. I haven't tested it on the road properly in any way - just driven it around in traffic for a half hour or so. But it is like chalk and cheese compared to what it was. Between dyno numbers and driving feedback: It makes 100 kW at 3k rpm, which is OK, could be better. That's stock 2JZ territory, or RB20 with G series 550. It actually starts building boost from 2k, which is certainly better than it did recently (with all the WG flapper bullshit). Although it's hard to remember what it was like prior to all that - it certainly seems much, much better. And that makes sense, given the WG was probably starting to blow open at anything above about 3 psi anyway (with the 6 psi actuator). It doesn't really get to "full boost" (say 16 psi) until >>4k rpm. I am hopeful that this is a feature of the lack of boost controller keeping boost pressure off the actuator, because it was turned off for the dyno and off for the drives afterward. There's more to be found here, I'm sure. It made 230 rwkW at not a lot more than 6k and held it to over 7k, so there seems to be plenty of potential to get it up to 250-260rwkW with 18 psi or so, which would be a decent effort, considering the stock sized turbo inlet pipework and AFM, and the return flow cooler. According to Tao, those things should definitely put a bit of a limit on it by that sort of number. I must stress that I have not opened the throttle 100% on the road yet - well, at least not 100% and allowed it to wind all the way up. It'll have to wait until some reasonable opportunity. I'm quite looking forward to that - it feels massively better than it has in a loooong time. It's back to its old self, plus about 20% extra powers over the best it ever did before. I'm going to get the boost controller set up to maximise spool and settle at no more than ~17 psi (for now) and then go back on the dyno to see what we can squeeze out of it. There is other interesting news too. I put together a replacement tube to fit the R35 AFM in the stock location. This is the first time the tuner has worked with one, because anyone else he has tuned for has gone from Z32 territory to aftermarket ECU. No-one has ever wanted to stay Nistuned and do what I've done. Anyway, his feedback is that the R35 AFM is super super super responsive. Tiny little changes in throttle position or load turn up immediately as a cell change on the maps. Way, way more responsive than any of the old skool AFMs. Makes it quite diffifult to tune as you have to stay right on top of that so you don't wander off the cell you wanted to tune. But it certainly seems to help with real world throttle response. That's hard to separate from all the other things that changed, but the "pedal feel" is certainly crisp.
    • I'm a bit confused by this post, so I'll address the bit I understand lol.  Use an air compressor and blow away the guide coat sanding residue. All the better if you have a moisture trap for your compressor. You'd want to do this a few times as you sand the area, you wouldn't for example sand the entire area till you think its perfect and then 'confirm' that is it by blowing away the guide coat residue.  Sand the area, blow away the guide coat residue, inspect the panel, back to sanding... rinse and repeat.
    • The detail level is about right for the money they charge for the full kit... AU$21.00 each issue, 110 issues for a total of $2,300 (I mentioned $2.2K in the first post when the exchange rate was better). $20/week is doable... 😐

    • You put the driver's seat on the wrong side! Incredible detail on all of this. It looks like you could learn a lot about the car just from assembling the kit.
