OK, my left shock has blown on my r32. since the rest of the shocks are the same age (they are KYB buzzspec shocks with what i think are the stock springs), its time to upgrade!! Might as well do it right the first time (stuff getting stock struts and springs).

Of course theres the Tein Super Streets from fulcrum. everything i hear is good about them, but the price is a little "average" for me, about $2000 installed.

I found a guy in adelaide who has HKS Hypermax D coilovers, which have 5000km's on them. I dont know the spring rates on them yet, but he reckons they are in good condition. They are $1200 apparently.

Both sets of coilovers are height and dampener adjustable.

This is the dilemma. The teins will be brand new, so I know what abuse they have had (ie. none), while the HKS are unknown (5000km's of drifting has to produce a bit of wear right?). the tiens also have a 2 year, 40K warranty.

To get the HKS's i guess freight will need to be payed, so thats an extra $70, plus i need to put them on (i guess i can do that myself, or get a mate), and then get them aligned and adjusted properly, about $100. so that brings the HKS's to about $1400. fair bit less than the teins.

I admit im a noob at suspension, I dont know much....i would love to hear your opinions guys! :P

Well out of those choices I'd pay the extra money and get the Teins which are brand new and have a warranty etc etc..

Personally I'd find a used set of Teins for $700 like my mate did.. they work fine.. worst comes to worse you can get them rebuilt by Fulcrum.. still costing less than brand new ones I would imagine.

BTW How do you know for sure the HKS ones have only done 5000kms? Also you say you need to get them freighted so I imagine you don't live nearby. Personally I would rather get to check them out in person before I bought used suspension.

If you can afford it though you should buy the new suspension rather than taking the risk with the cheaper used suspension.

yer, the seller is in adelaide, im in brisbane. so its hard to verify. he just claims they did 5k. its just like buying off a yahoo auction...could be dubious.

and if the HKS need reconditioning, i midas well get the brand new teins.

also fulcrum is 5 mins drive from me, they are so close.

i had hypermax-d's and i sold them and got whiteline suspension. i doubt they would be that new im not even sure they make them anymore... when i sold mine i didnt know how many ks exactly but i told the guy at least a few years worth!

anyway if you are really set in getting japanese coilovers just shell out the extra and get the aus spec teins they will be heaps better overall than the hyper-d's.

or even better buy bilstein shocks and whiteline springs plus adjustable bushes and swaybars which you could get for approximately the price of the teins.

btw i think 1200 for any second hand shocks is not a fair price unless you know 100% that they are very close to new. i sold mine for 500 plus postage.. much more and i would have felt i was ripping the guy off :P

edit: also wanted to add that with the whiteline suspension i have now i you can drive a lot faster over almost any road when compared with the coilovers.

Ouch! that works out at 450 for installation based on what i paid for a set about a month ago! Retail is only $1865.

Seems a bit pricey to remove 12 nuts and replace if you ask me. It'd want to include a 4 wheel alignment at least.

For reference, the first time i ever swapped struts it took under 2 hours from start to finish with no outside help. That included removing and reinstalling the boot trim

i just had the teins installed for $2000. feel a bit softer than the original kit, but much nicer ride. played with the settings today and full hard is a fair bit stiffer than the originals. full soft is nice for cruising. i set about 4 clicks off full soft and it seems a nice balance. drilled a couple of holes thru the boot trim to be able to access the rear adjustment (bit cheaper than the edfc kit) and you cant even see the holes. easy as. plus it sits about 15mm lower than standard, which is about right. have scrubbed the inside of the tyre well a couple of times (only the plastic inner guard liner) but i have very fat 265/35's so all in all very happy.

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch.     • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
